Someone has probably asked this already, but is the mascara necessary? Just wondering because I have long lashes that tends to be much more visible if I wear any kind of mascara.
I have a question. I'm a white male cosplaying as Kyoya Otori from Ouran High School Host Club. Obviously one of his defining characteristics is that he is very Japanese (otherwise the contrast between him and Tamaki's French heritage would not be so sharp or funny). Would you recommend that I change my face and exposed skin color (this would just be my hand) and if so, how dark of a shade should I get?
Ha, I'm totally new to this make up thing, and yet, crossplaying in two months. I'll probably be following this video to a T - thanks for posting! Hibari Kyouya will be happy. XD
Great video! And I think it's great how you say what product you used specificaly before each step. Your tutorials are very helpful and informative!
I'm crossplaying as someone with very dark eyes and I was wondering; would it be too much to start out with a darker color than brown at the start? I have an extremely pale complexion but I don't know if black would be too much. Would you get the same effect with black as you do with the brown eyeliner and eyeshadow?
I have a little problem that makes crossplaying hard for me and I would really appreciate your advice. I have really long, really dark, and eyelash-curler-style eyelashes (they're natural). Is there anything I can do about them to make them look... Manly-er?
oh wow. I never thought you could use make-up to make someone look LESS feminine. This is great, especially since I tend to cosplay boys a lot :D awesome!
Thank you very much, your vids are great and very helpful. I'm a Cosplay newbie and I had no idea how to look more masculine so your tutorial is exactly what I need
Im doing an Edward Elric cosplay and Im an extreemly pale person. And when I say pale...Im almost like albino o.o. Would using a brown still be the best thing to do? Or would it make my face look funny? (lol it already does but you know :P)

Your tutorials are amazing! I am going to try these for my next photo shoot!! I have been looking for ways to make my face look good but not look like a girl when cosplaying Rufus Shinra. Thanks!! :D
nee, Some tip that you could give me to do that I meet "more "masculine" or as child .. because my face is round and has too many girl's facial features because I want to do crossplay as Ciel from Kuroshitsuji
If I do not manage to meet more as a boy .. I will be " lady Ciel " XD
i think for ciel, because he's a very very young boy, it doesnt really matter how girly your face looks; he's a typical feminine uke character. although the lady ciel dresses (specially the pink one) are rather cute lol
you think ?? but i think that Ciel even if he is a young boy, he stills have a peculiar look... i dont know if you understand... but i have try this tutorial... and i still look like a girl.. and even more girly if thats possible XDD i have said it.. crossplay, is not for me XD
don't worry, me either, lol. i can no longer crossplay. my problem is i can make myself look just like a boy except for one little detail....i'm a D-cup. binding does not work. lol
what method are you using ? i have double-d 's and i can bind them down to make me able to crossplay correctly . ^_^ if you needs some tips , i can tell you ! you should never stop cosplaying/crossplaying !
Actually i know a few people who have D cups and they can still bind themselves. It really is all about technique. Check out the cosplaydotcom forums.
Is it possible to do this if you don't have any matte eyeshadow? Or the white face powder? If not, could you please recommend some INEXPENSIVE products that I could buy? Also, do you have any idea where I could get a white eyebrow pencil? The character I want to do has white eyebrows.
No, it's pretty impossible to do without some thing in place of those two items because those two are what will contour your face to look more masculine (highlighting and shadows). Anyway the best value for your money, I suggest Ben Nye Cream Personal Kit. They sell in diff set colors based on your skin color. They go for $15-20 and extremely high quality since they are for theatre. Also it has everything you are ever going to need for crossplay make up(brush, sponges and face powder included).
However theres one catch about the kit, it's cream make up. So it's harder to do without having experience using it before. It is all about the blending so for this kit you need to learn how to blend with a flat make up brush or latex cosmetic sponge. It's incrediably easy once you get used to it and the color pay off as waaaaaay better.
For white eyebrows...I would just trim my eyebrows length wise with a comb and scissors. So that they are less dark and bushy then apply a white eyeshadow on them, or white creme make up and just draw them on with a liner brush.
Ooh, I found out that if you use brown mascara the opposite way, so instead of coating your lashes in an upward direction, you coat them in a downward direction. It seems to make it look more masculine and focused. Worth a shot?
Wow, this really does work! I will DEFINITLEY be using this Ohayocon! I'm going as L! Could you do a tutorial on how to do Axel's makeup? That'd be great :)
Somehow I think that no makeup would help masculinity. But that's nearly impossible for girls. So thumbs up! Because it worked!
Asian folk have a decent advantage though, men tend to look a little more feminine than White guys. Not to be racist of course just pointing out my observation.
Nah, don't worry I actually agree with you. People of asian descent (men and women) typically have face shapes that are what I call "moon" shaped, a characteristic most common in what we recognise as feminine. Whereas non asian people tend to have less of that shape. This is just my observations as well though.
and what about for a fimine boy? should i still do something different for the eyeborws so he looks less masculine? or maybe high light the cheeks different ? (corssplay: yuki sohma)
Im a girl and i have dark eyebrows but i want to cosplay allen walker. how do i make my eyebrows lighter so that they dont stand out so much when im wearing the white wig? ^_^ thanks x
And it really, really works. I've used this meathod for all my cosplays. ^__^ It's easy to wash off too! You can find all this stuff at wal-mart.XD School glue is like 80 cents and acrylic paint is like 50.XD
Lol, what I do is tweeze my eyebrows to the right shape first, and then use a comb as a guide to trim my eyebrows with scissors so they are shorter and because they are shorter I can put any type of eyeshadow over them to change their color since they are no longer thick they end up looking more grey than black.
Nice! I have a question though, would a different eye color effect what shades/ colors you used? I plan on crossplaying as Nova from Bleach and he has an aqua eye color.
No it doesn't change with a different eye color. Shades for the eyeshadow changes though depending on how dramatic you want the eye area to look, for example L from deathnote.
I was wondering, if my skin is like mocha but a little darker color would I still use the same colors? I also really liked your other tutorials they were really helpful, well to my friend anyways.
wow amazing! I just have a few questions: one is what was the last product you used? One looked like a powder and the second didn't look like a powder. It looked like a different product. So you confused me a bit.
and if you use a lighter brown would it ruin the effects? I have the same colored eyes as you and probably the same eye shape. So what would you suggest? Or does the eyeliner just become hidden?
Everything I used was said in the video. The last product I used was my Kryolan anti-shine powder. There was only one product not two. For cosplay I suggest going with the darker brown since I think people tend to look washed out with a normal lighter brown from the cameras.
okay I was just confused for a moment. Thanks. so usse a darker brown? I'll remember that. This has really helped me and I can't wait to start my cosplaying! keep up the good work.
Would everything be the same if you have light colored hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes? Like, would you still use the dark eyebrow liner and black mascara?
You should become a make-up artist. Like seriously, you know many techniques and are familiar (from what I can tell) with many products, it's actually scary haha!
Actually as long as you bleach your hair right and take care of it afterwards with lots of conditioner it shouldn't feel that different. My bleached and dyed hair is actually in really good condition the same as undyed/bleached hair, that alot of people that meet me are suprized. It's just important you take care of it.
Hot! I love it! Thank you SO MUCH for the tips! I've been trying to figure out masculine makeup for a while (I wanna cosplay Tidus or Riku) and that's perfect! Wonderful. 5 stars. :)
I'm cosplaying a character who kind of has a tired look about him, with drooping eyes. (Sanzo from Saiyuki) and I was wondering if you had any tips on how to make my eyes look like they are drooping, with bags underneath of them.
Theres a certain way to apply your eyeliner so it changes your eyeshape to look more droopy for characters like Sanzo. For example if you've seen L cosplayers from Deathnote you'd know what I mean. Though for Sanzo the eyeliner shape you have to go for is a little different.
Right. So I should just contour the liner on top of the eye sort of downwards so it look's like it's drooping?
See the only trouble I'd have with that is that It'd be difficult to make the eye look non-feminine.
I'll definitely look at some L eye make-up examples, but I notice more of them don't bother to do the drooping motion and instead just smudge eyeliner.
Do you know where I can find some pictures of droopy eye makeup?
Hi! I'm Cosplaying As Edward Elric from FullMetal Alchemist. Should I use black or brown eyeliner for my eyes? Also is there anyway I can bring out the goldish tint in my eyes with eyeshadow or something? (I have brownish eyes.) Thanks.
Brown, definitely. He has light hair, so this will look better. Black is usually bad for anyone who doesn't have jet-black hair. Using a medium brown should help bring out the gold, too. If your hair/wig is a deep gold, this'll help, too. :3 Good luck!
I love your videos, they've improved my cosplaying a whole lot, but I have a question i've been looking all over for a real answer to.
I'am about to do a Cloud Strife cosplay, and my eyebrows are dark brown, how can I get them to look like a natural blonde without bleaching of dying them? Is there a make up or something I can buy to put on them?
An easy way is to apply a blonde colored creme eyeshadow to your eyebrows. You may have to have trimed eyebrows to do this succesfully though or else it might not cover it all up well enough. You could also try to find blonde mascara then use it on your eyebrows. Another way is to put Elmer's glue on your eyebrows, let them dry and them paint on eyebrows with acrylic paint lol (never did it myself tho).
You'd be suprised how not noticable it is with photographing lighting and stage lights and from far away. There's a reason why stage actors exaggerate their make up, it the same thing with cosplay because cosplay photography normally is taken from afar and not upclose.
Heres a question, issit a good idea to use black eyeliner instead of brown?? And smudge it like what you did to ur female one. And not use eyeshadow? orz i need help in this
I use brown or grey eyeliners with eyeshadows instead because black eyeliner is very recognisable as makeup (accentuates eyes more than needed for a male) and thus looks more feminine. Brown and grey smudged out looks more natural and masculine than black eyeliner alone. However you can use black eyeliner and black eyeshadow if you feel that the character you're portraying is more feminine and would do so or if you just like black eyeliner personally.
Several places, majority of the time I buy them from my local MAC cosmetics store or Sephora store. Sometimes I buy from Nordstrom make up counters as well. For some of the stuff in this tutorial I used things I got from the internet (ebay) or things I got from my friends when they returned from Japan or things I just had lying around.
amazing!!! hey can u help me out. erm you know when you cosplay as a boy and you want to bind your chest but dont have one of those binders then is there anything els that could possibaly be used?
ace bandages are a good supplement. but i would wear a bra under it. maybe a sports bra or even the top part of a tube top style bikini. or just a normal bra with no support in it. my friend went with no bra and said it hurt like hell hahaha.
You can use sports tape (there's a certain way you wrap it around your chest, there's a tutorial at cosplay(dot)com) and a sports bra or a compression shirt. I highly recommend using a ace bandage with it through.
Your video is awesome! You'd look like you had a cute twin brother if you put your girl picture right next to your guy picture! I have never done a cosplay, and the next thing I know I'm being shanghighed into doing a male cosplay just 'cause I'm tall! Of all things to start out with, yeesh! XD ah well atleast it's a Cute Bishie - (yay Gohjyo!) I am sure I can pull him off now with the help of your tutorial.
If my character is a bit on girly side, what should i do? he's a male, but a bit on 'feminine side'. like.. let say.. haku from naruto. any reccomendation? thx
Black eyeliner and grey eyeshadow, instead of brown. And less thick eyebrows more arched instead (like my female make up tutorial). But you still need to cover up your lip color like in the tutorial and add brown contouring around your face to add more masculine dimension.
is it grey eyeshadow because its for Haku? What about Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin? SHould i use brown or grey eyeshadow? And is setting powder a loose powder? Or is it any anti-shine powder? Sorry for bombarding you with questions. This is my first time using make up, hahaha.
I would use brown for Kenshin since he's not really a "black/grey wearing character or very feminine". Setting powder is a light transluscent powder that sets makeup so it lasts longer, and gets rid of oily shine throughout the day (can be loose or pressed).
No it doesn't matter but it's recommended to choose one that matches your skintone the best. Or if your trying to look paler at most 2 shades lighter than your skintone.
Probably already been asked, but you don't happen to know of an alternative lipstick that can be used do you? I cannot find MAC at all where I live. And its about £20 per lipstick online. XD
I'm sorry, the best advice I can give is that you should just try around and look for any nude opaque lipstick that works from any company you like. It doesn't have to be from MAC (it's just my personal favourite). A quick fix though is using concealer on your lips but it won't feel as nice or have as nice of consistancy like lipstick (plus it looks more natural).
at least i think i´ve got a hint for other non-asian: don´t use black eyeliner, just use shaddowpowder. and another tip is, put some dark powder around your head line and your chin. this makes shades and your face should look harder.
This is SUCH a big help. I'm not sure if I've commented before THANK YOU!! This is really, really helpful!
but I do have a question: If I'm doing L, which I understand I just switch the brown eyeliner for black and etc., would could I use to add a paler look to my skin?
Amazing! Thank you very much! I will go try this out right now! You do such a good job. By the end of the video, if I saw you walking down the street I would totally think you were a boy. ^^
And on a side note, I love your hair, and I love your song choice (AFI is one of my favorite). :D
If you wait long enough I'll do at tutorial on it for you since it's very easy to do. However if you're short on time you can head over to the crossplay section of the cosplay(dot)com forums and they explain it there in detail just not pictures or video.
Where do you get your make up from? Like can I get them at Wal mart or Victora's Secret? Or is there a specfic store that I have to buy them from? ._.
You can buy all these items from the internet. Since all the items I use are import items or are discontinued or manufacturer exclusives from their websites.
Yes I dyed my hair purple and pink after bleaching it to blonde. And no it doesn't really damage my hair because unnatural/semi-permanent hair dyes (such as Special Effects hair dye) are vegetable dyes and do not damage your hair (peroxide damages your hair which is present in permanent hair dyes in order for it to stay permanent). I only use vegetable dye for my unnatural hair colors since unnatural permanent hair dyes nearly do not exist.
I was so shocked to see how it really simple and yet effective this was. I for a few moments forgot you were a girl...sorry ^^...but then again a more masculine look was the point. Why is it though by having the brown on the bottom and the white on top of your cheeks helps? Dumb question probably...but I'm truly wondering.
It's for contouring. Males tend to have more sharper bone structures than females and so by contouring you can make the illusion of sharper features (they do this particularly alot in theatre make up). On me I have a particularly round facial features (like my cheeks) that I can make less noticeable this way.
I really like what you did with your eyes--makes them pop, yet still looks natural and not too girly. I don't like when it's obvious that a crossplayer is wearing eyeliner (unless it's necessary for the character), but for basic males who don't have an extreme or bishounen look, this is great. Thanks for the tutorial! Plus, your hair is cool. -w-

I was wondering, if my skin is like mocha but a little darker color would I still use the same colors? I also really liked your other tutorials they were really helpful, well to my friend anyways.
RaDemShun 2 years ago
Yup same thing just a darker palette of make up to suit your skin.

i never considered eyeshadow (which i have) for the shading rather than darker foundation (which i don't have). thanks for the awesome tips!

ZeldaFanatic0121 2 years ago
wow amazing!
Or does the eyeliner just become hidden?
thanks and awesome video
Ryukuni 2 years ago
Everything I used was said in the video. The last product I used was my Kryolan anti-shine powder. There was only one product not two. For cosplay I suggest going with the darker brown since I think people tend to look washed out with a normal lighter brown from the cameras.
TsunenTsusho 2 years ago
okay I was just confused for a moment. Thanks. so usse a darker brown? I'll remember that. This has really helped me and I can't wait to start my cosplaying! keep up the good work.

Would everything be the same if you have light colored hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes? Like, would you still use the dark eyebrow liner and black mascara?
63rewind36 2 years ago
it depends who youre cosplaying as. if he has light eyelashes, brows, etc., then you probably wouldnt need the dark makeup.

Is your hair dry? I'm too afraid to bleach and dye my hair because I think it'll make it dry....
ZuNatious18 2 years ago
Actually as long as you bleach your hair right and take care of it afterwards with lots of conditioner it shouldn't feel that different. My bleached and dyed hair is actually in really good condition the same as undyed/bleached hair, that alot of people that meet me are suprized. It's just important you take care of it.

I'm cosplaying a character who kind of has a tired look about him, with drooping eyes. (Sanzo from Saiyuki) and I was wondering if you had any tips on how to make my eyes look like they are drooping, with bags underneath of them.
kachiechan 2 years ago
Theres a certain way to apply your eyeliner so it changes your eyeshape to look more droopy for characters like Sanzo. For example if you've seen L cosplayers from Deathnote you'd know what I mean. Though for Sanzo the eyeliner shape you have to go for is a little different.
TsunenTsusho 2 years ago

Brush some brown eyeshadow/sculpting powder under your chin. Mainly around the edges of your chin (near your ear).

Hi! I'm Cosplaying As Edward Elric from FullMetal Alchemist. Should I use black or brown eyeliner for my eyes? Also is there anyway I can bring out the goldish tint in my eyes with eyeshadow or something? (I have brownish eyes.) Thanks.
animewillruleyou 3 years ago
Huh.I am, too.

Kamokuu 3 years ago
An easy way is to apply a blonde colored creme eyeshadow to your eyebrows. You may have to have trimed eyebrows to do this succesfully though or else it might not cover it all up well enough. You could also try to find blonde mascara then use it on your eyebrows. Another way is to put Elmer's glue on your eyebrows, let them dry and them paint on eyebrows with acrylic paint lol (never did it myself tho).
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
Those are all great ideas, thank you. ^_^ I've never heard of the elmer's glue one before. XD
Kamokuu 3 years ago 3
wow the eyeshadow isnt noticeable at all...*rolls eyes*
lilflav90210 3 years ago
You'd be suprised how not noticable it is with photographing lighting and stage lights and from far away. There's a reason why stage actors exaggerate their make up, it the same thing with cosplay because cosplay photography normally is taken from afar and not upclose.
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
I've said this before, but your hair drives me wild. It's just brilliantly done. (And so is the tutorial, but I've said that before as well!)
hooraytheweird 3 years ago 4
Heres a question, issit a good idea to use black eyeliner instead of brown?? And smudge it like what you did to ur female one. And not use eyeshadow? orz i need help in this
Xani3le 3 years ago
I use brown or grey eyeliners with eyeshadows instead because black eyeliner is very recognisable as makeup (accentuates eyes more than needed for a male) and thus looks more feminine. Brown and grey smudged out looks more natural and masculine than black eyeliner alone. However you can use black eyeliner and black eyeshadow if you feel that the character you're portraying is more feminine and would do so or if you just like black eyeliner personally.
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
oh i never thought of bleding in the eyeliner! on the top it always makes me look light i have a black eye.
btw where do you buy your makeup? just curious!
shinigamidesu 3 years ago
Several places, majority of the time I buy them from my local MAC cosmetics store or Sephora store. Sometimes I buy from Nordstrom make up counters as well. For some of the stuff in this tutorial I used things I got from the internet (ebay) or things I got from my friends when they returned from Japan or things I just had lying around.
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
amazing!!! hey can u help me out. erm you know when you cosplay as a boy and you want to bind your chest but dont have one of those binders then is there anything els that could possibaly be used?
JustJappyNess 3 years ago
ace bandages are a good supplement. but i would wear a bra under it. maybe a sports bra or even the top part of a tube top style bikini. or just a normal bra with no support in it. my friend went with no bra and said it hurt like hell hahaha.
LoveTheLies 3 years ago
You can use sports tape (there's a certain way you wrap it around your chest, there's a tutorial at cosplay(dot)com) and a sports bra or a compression shirt. I highly recommend using a ace bandage with it through.

If my character is a bit on girly side, what should i do? he's a male, but a bit on 'feminine side'. like.. let say.. haku from naruto. any reccomendation? thx
deadfudge 3 years ago
Black eyeliner and grey eyeshadow, instead of brown. And less thick eyebrows more arched instead (like my female make up tutorial). But you still need to cover up your lip color like in the tutorial and add brown contouring around your face to add more masculine dimension.
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
is it grey eyeshadow because its for Haku? What about Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin? SHould i use brown or grey eyeshadow? And is setting powder a loose powder? Or is it any anti-shine powder? Sorry for bombarding you with questions. This is my first time using make up, hahaha.
HikariYamino 3 years ago
I would use brown for Kenshin since he's not really a "black/grey wearing character or very feminine". Setting powder is a light transluscent powder that sets makeup so it lasts longer, and gets rid of oily shine throughout the day (can be loose or pressed).
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
Ooh!! Thanks a lot! Does it matter what colour the loose powder is? Because i bought one and it is ' Natural Medium'.
HikariYamino 3 years ago
No it doesn't matter but it's recommended to choose one that matches your skintone the best. Or if your trying to look paler at most 2 shades lighter than your skintone.
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
for people with very pale skin would you reccomend using the same brown eyeshadow, or would it be better to go with something lighter?

Probably already been asked, but you don't happen to know of an alternative lipstick that can be used do you? I cannot find MAC at all where I live. And its about £20 per lipstick online. XD
Awesome tutorial! Thanks for uploading it :D
Telcontar 3 years ago
I'm sorry, the best advice I can give is that you should just try around and look for any nude opaque lipstick that works from any company you like. It doesn't have to be from MAC (it's just my personal favourite). A quick fix though is using concealer on your lips but it won't feel as nice or have as nice of consistancy like lipstick (plus it looks more natural).
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
Ah cool, I'll take a look around and see what comes up. :D
Thanks for the advice :3
Telcontar 3 years ago
like a nude one?
alot of people put concealer(did i spell it right?) on their lips as an alternative.
but i think maybelline or any other brands will have the lipstick that you want :D

at least i think i´ve got a hint for other non-asian: don´t use black eyeliner, just use shaddowpowder. and another tip is, put some dark powder around your head line and your chin. this makes shades and your face should look harder.

great work, .. if I hade done that to myself I would look like a tranny... that's for sure ! :O ..

This is SUCH a big help. I'm not sure if I've commented before THANK YOU!! This is really, really helpful!
but I do have a question: If I'm doing L, which I understand I just switch the brown eyeliner for black and etc., would could I use to add a paler look to my skin?
freakageek 3 years ago
A white powder compact or a foundation that is max 2 shades lighter than your normal foundation shade.

If you wait long enough I'll do at tutorial on it for you since it's very easy to do. However if you're short on time you can head over to the crossplay section of the cosplay(dot)com forums and they explain it there in detail just not pictures or video.

Just one question~ O:
Where do you get your make up from? Like can I get them at Wal mart or Victora's Secret? Or is there a specfic store that I have to buy them from? ._.
Yuna132 3 years ago
You can buy all these items from the internet. Since all the items I use are import items or are discontinued or manufacturer exclusives from their websites.
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
i have one question :OOO
did yooh actually dye your hair purple and pink?
or is it something else? x]
it's really fasinating :]
:OO doesn't your hair get realyl damaged after all that dying though?
ILubDalGiXD 3 years ago
Yes I dyed my hair purple and pink after bleaching it to blonde. And no it doesn't really damage my hair because unnatural/semi-permanent hair dyes (such as Special Effects hair dye) are vegetable dyes and do not damage your hair (peroxide damages your hair which is present in permanent hair dyes in order for it to stay permanent). I only use vegetable dye for my unnatural hair colors since unnatural permanent hair dyes nearly do not exist.

OMG..you look lik a boy who looks lik a girl... haha
OTL508 3 years ago
I was so shocked to see how it really simple and yet effective this was. I for a few moments forgot you were a girl...sorry ^^...but then again a more masculine look was the point. Why is it though by having the brown on the bottom and the white on top of your cheeks helps? Dumb question probably...but I'm truly wondering.
snaplesugar 3 years ago
It's for contouring. Males tend to have more sharper bone structures than females and so by contouring you can make the illusion of sharper features (they do this particularly alot in theatre make up). On me I have a particularly round facial features (like my cheeks) that I can make less noticeable this way.
TsunenTsusho 3 years ago
Oh...thank you for explaining! Have a nice day/night (to cover any time zone you may be in ^^)
