for any one who has never been to pocano it is a really nice track i go every year for nascar would love ot see indy cars come back its a really fast track might be ot fast for them but im sure they could find out something they could do like a new gear rule or somtihng to keep the speeds from geting to high
If it's a 211 qualifying average, what about do they run on the main frontstretch into turn 1? Cup guys average under 170, and hit just about 200 into that turn... So does that mean these cars may have hit over 250?
1:12..."TAPED EARLIER TODAY"...NBC's codespeak for "we're going to skip to lap 75 after the first commercial break." I think NBC used to have a 2-hour TV window for the whole 500 miles.
racermac1988, COOL....i'll agree with you on that to an extent. but you have to understand, they aren't going to come out and say that it's because of i.s.c. they aren't going to say that promotion of the event sucks. they are always going to say the politically correct thing. p.c. aside...indycar fans should be up in fucking arms because now we have a united series and NO TRIPLE CROWN!!
The reason they quit racing at Pocono was due to the danger, the same reason IndyCar said they are not going to Michigan this year. Even though Michigan this year would be great with a full field of IndyCars this year!
goddamn promoters of the event DON'T promote the event. can you say i.s.c.? pocono is no more dangerous that any other 200 m.p.h. track man. geez, c'mon.
Before you jump my case, I am just saying that is the reason I heard by an IndyCar official who was in charge of the Q&A session at the IndyCar race at Kentucky last year. His words were, "Safety at Michigan is a concern, similar to the Pocono situation 20 years ago..." I'm just saying what I've heard. Even though promotion of the event is pathetic. I agree with you on that part.
ISC does not own Pocono, it's privately owned by the Mattioli family......it's a sad thing to see, a wonderful racetrack with no infusion of cash to improve it
an indy car race at talladega is a very bad idea. nextel cup cars do 200 there WITH restrictor plates, and they weigh 3400 pounds. the speed and g forces exerted on the drivers would be too much to endure. remember what happened when champ car tried to race at texas?
i find it hard to believe that indy cars ever raced at pocono, with the unique configuration and the way the walls are angled in the corners, a crash here would be much more severe than at indianapolis. i think we could have a death here if open wheel cars returned although i love the racetrack itself
Sound crazy like that... But it's possible, look: 3,740 feet for the Frontstretch at Pocono and 3,330 feet for the backstretch and frontstretch at Indy...
Having said all that, an open wheel race at Pocono today would be quite interesting. It would be like the Indianapolis 500, but maybe a little more difficult to pass. I fear that by repaving the place, they might make it too fast for open wheel cars.
It would still be great if open wheel cars could come back. Maybe only oval on the ChampCar schedule? (I wish they would go back on ovals, for me that was great racing, the combination of road courses, street courses and ovals, a driver needed real skill to master them all). Just think if indycars raced on talladega, that would be awesome.
6. The curbing (especially in the Tunnel Turn) would need to be fixed. There are razor edges in the curbing (designed to keep people off them) that can cut tires, and with the speeds that open wheel cars would have at Pocono, that's dangerous.
7. Possibly (with the repaving) try to flatten pit road. Currently, it notably unjulates, which could cause problems with air jacks.
3. The track will have to be meticulously repaved in order to get rid of the bumps.
4. The inside wall may have to be addressed again (this was last addressed in 2002 after the Steve Park crash during the July Cup race).
5. Catchfences would need to be installed all the way around the track. Presently, the track has no catchfence from a point just beyond an access lane next to the grandstand to the end of the Long Pond Straight.
2. One of the open wheel sanctioning bodies would have to want to race there (most likely the IRL). It could be used as a stopgap measure for the New York-Lehigh Valley market until the Staten Island track is complete, whatever decade that happens in (fairly confident that it's not this one, and possibly not the next one).
What a sensational classic! Quaker State 500 @ Pocono. If there was a merger series, they should have raced in one of the classic racetracks such as Pocono. (If Pocono's ownership of the track wasn't so cheap)
The track was too rough, that's why Champ Car pulled Pocono from the schedule. The track's not as bumpy now, but still...Champ Car racing hasn't raced at Pocono since 1989. I don't know if they'll ever race at Pocono again.
No, it was repaved about 15 years ago. Notice how there are lanes painted on the front straight in this video. And then notice how there aren't any lanes in this video: watch?v=wF-VhY6fitU
Last time Indy cars ran at Pocono was in 1989. There was an issue with the surface. If they repaved it I think they could run IRL here

Pocono should now be suitable once again for IndyCars, they oughta start racing there again & at Michigan startin in 2012...

@CooterPuppet No, 215-220 was about it. They just didn't have to slow down for the corners as much as the Cup guys do.

Indy car racing is on total life support. Haven't watched Indy car races in a long time. Honestly the series killed itself. Oh well

6 wide?? THATS INSAINE! The speeds they must have run there must have been insaine
Crisgo3d 3 years ago 2
what kinds of speeds were they running there? just curious

The pole speed for the 1989 race was 211 mph. Pole speed at Indianapolis that year was 223.

anyone notice how wide the front stretch was back then?

I knew CART raced at Pocono back in the day, just never saw it til now. One of the biggest, if not the biggest straights are at pocono correct?

yep, longer then indy

holly shit the onboard cameras just look scarry. I can't immagine going over that surface at those speeds.

Is Michigan too bumpy for IndyCars?
I read somewhere that was the case for Pocono in the 80s.
JoeytheHDK 3 years ago
That was one of the reasons they gave in the "Downforce" meeting at Kentucky.
Personally, I don't think it is. The track was just as bumpy before they paved the track in 1994 and they raced there.
That and as we all know, ISC doesn't promote IndyCar like they should.

Very true, because someone tested an Indycar at Daytona and was killed.

I wouldn't worry about it being too fast for open wheel cars. The track is slower than Indy is the benchmark of saftey for Indy Cars and Champ Cars.

In order for Pocono to have another open wheel race, a few things need to happen.
1. The Doc and his family (the Mattiolis, who own the track) have to want them to come (as of now, they don't).
