I think it's interesting to note that Michael Wittmann started his career on the Eastern Front with a StuG, and the technique, or in the StuG's case the requirement, to turn the vehicle on its tracks to find a line of fire was a technique he carried with him when commanding his now famous Tiger.
@fhaust36 And so I'm not entirely sure that the fixed turrent would be all that much of a drawback. Of course it would be silly of me to assume that the StuG and the Tiger operated in the same way, but its an interesting thought.
they should have made more anti bomber aircraft after the succes of the stugs to counter aircraft over germany or underground bunkr factories which came late in the war
The Germans had to use vast amounts of captured equipment. Many of their Panzerjaegers, the Marder I, II and III used French and Czech chassis, and the Hetzer Pzjg was also based onthe Czech chassis. Entire Infantry divisions were equipped with captured rifles, SMGs, pistols, and MGs, & captured Artillery was used in great abundance as were captured AT guns.
Every Army in WW2 used enemy weapons. the Americans called the MP-40 ''the burp gun'' and they thaught it was better than the thommy gun. and latter in hte war, the PPSh41 who were captured used german 9mm ammo
Germans often used the ppsh41. They were unmatched weapons at 100m range, high capacity magazines, widespread ammunition and insane rate of fire. Arguably the ppsh41 was the best smg of the war.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the STuG III, one of Germany's best weapons platforms of the war
Danb- STuG were artillery. Originally they were for close infantry support. Think of them as really fast artillery, that could keep up with motorized/mechanized infantry, and the armor.
When things got hairy in Russia, it was found that the German AT weapons (including PZ III) and short barreled PZ IV were also incapable.
As a matter of emergency long 75 was put into STuG III. Took AT role, but still artillery.
@astrocat75 Yes, but then the StuG would become known as a "tank destroyer"...much like in a ships fleet there are "destroyers". It was almost a new classification of tank type.
@calimar28 You know Destroyers were originaly called Torpedo Boat Destroyers and develped from there. The big guns of a battle ship around the turn of the century were not capable of taking out a small fast moving torpedo boat. Solution make a small ship that is as fast as a torpedo boat with bigger guns than a torpedo boat to protect the battleships.
@astrocat75 Well, the early model Panzer 3s were mainly used in an anti-tank role, and the Panzer 4s for close support. When it became obvious the smaller P3 chassis couldn't handle the larger AT guns needed, they switched roles, and the late model P4s was used for the AT role, and the P3s for close support.
where is the 3/5 ???

I wonder how many of these assault guns and tank killers could have been produced if the Tiger and Panther tanks were not allowed in production.

The Romanian & Italians could have used the stug against the Soviet forces on the flanks of Stalingrad but instead they had their ass handed to them.

stugs were their own divisions... but the field infantry was often put in charge of them in a battle

Excellent progression of the story! Lots of facts in each of the five videos.
German soldiers often used the PPSH because they had a large magazine and were very handy in urban combat.
