  • wait, was Beauty and the Beast animated entirely on 1s?

  • I love animation and have always wanted to be an animator but I never truly realized all he work that goes into a simple 2 seconds

  • People often take animation for granted... ;w;

  • now, good riddance mr dewfilms

  • Dude, Princess and the Frog had a budget of 105 million dollars. It earned at the box office 104 million dollars. Winnie the Pooh had a budget of 30 million dollars. It earned at the box office 26 million.

Do some research on the internet. Disney does NOT have any plans for anymore 2D animated features.

  • @Dewfilms you don`t believe me do you? >:( answer me!!

  • @diegoradoblasio They should make a Darkwing Duck movie in 2D animation!

  • @dolphinluv2413 hmm sigh :I i dont know, because we know that disney`s specialty is musical 2d style, don`t you think?

  • @Dewfilms and something else, when i say BOX OFFICE SUCCESS i don`t mean just the domestic US gross (even happened to Tangled to not beat domestically) YOU BIG TWIT, i mean the WORLD WIDE GROSS:

    - THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG gross revenue over 270 million world wide

-TANGLED gross revenue over 590 million worldwide

-WINNIE THE POOH gross revenue over 33 million worldwide

who`s wrong now huh?, AND I^M TELLING YOU THE TRUTH THAT KING OF THE ELVES IS THE NEXT 2D FILM, & thats my last word

  • How come they dont make 2d catoons like these anymore they were awsome :(.

  • @PREZILLA2009 hey hey, 2 things i want to tell you:

    - they are making the the return to the musical 2d style thanks to the princess and the frog and tangled

    - will you believe me if i tell you that i once thought don hahn was actually robin williams? XD tiheheheheh

  • @diegoradoblasio

Hate to burst your bubble, but Disney does NOT have any future plans for 2D animated features. This is due to the fact that "Princess and the Frog" and the recent "Winnie the Pooh" did not meet the box office expectations Disney was hoping for.

  • @Dewfilms nononono HOLD ON A SECOND, you`re misunderstanding something, why of course the princess and the frog had a box office success , i mean the princess and the frog is the new the little mermaid, tangled (which is 2d/cgi combined style) is the new beauty and the beast, in other words the next 2d animated film after winnie the pooh (WHICH IT HAD ENOUGH SUCCESS TO BEAT THE BUDGET which that matters) is KING OF THE ELVES, oh and something else (about the reason of rapunzel title change)

  • @Dewfilms the reason of why they had to change the title to TANGLED it wasn`t by the results of TPATF, it was because the directors said they changed the title from Rapunzel to Tangled because Rapunzel is not the only main character in the film. They went on to say that you can't call Toy Story "Buzz Lightyear," and they really needed a title that represented what the film is, and that it’s a duo, and it stars Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. believe me i know everything

  • @Dewfilms in other back to pure 2d technic theme, due to the critical and commercial success of the princess and the frog, persuaded Disney to release one new hand-drawn animated feature to be released every two years. in other words according in disney news here in mexico where i live in toluca, they`re going to release on next year on the holiday seasons THE SNOW QUEEN ( special 2d/cgi animation combined like in tangled) and KING OF THE ELVES (2d animation like the princess and the frog)

  • @Dewfilms i hope i made to you useful this information, my name`s diego and i call THE DIISNEY GUARDIAN ;)

  • @Dewfilms i mean i call my self the disney guardian :/

  • I think Glen Keane is better at drawing males than females! Espeacially when it comes to monsters.

  • @dolphinluv2413 Really? But he did the majority of animation on Ariel in the little mermaid.

  • @yellowcougar18 I think his female characters were kinda ugly.

  • i really wish they still made movies like this, it's all computer generated nowadays and this is the kinda stuff i want to do,

computer generated stuff is still amazing, but you cant beat going back to the basics with just pencil and paper and creating something beautiful.

  • this is amazing, hopefully i can do something like this one day...

  • The spinning chandelier scene definitely looks like one of those 'kick your own ass' scenes. I wonder how many people it took to do the whole thing.

  • whoa ..i didnt know three animators would be working on different characters all in one scene =O ..how!?

  • All you people hating on 3d, did you realise Beauty and the Beast was one of the first disney movies to use 3d? Yes, this movie contains the CG you oh so hate.

  • @ffles And so does Tarzan :D. I find it funny that people are hating on Cg. xD

  • @ffles I think what most people are trying to express is how 3D is used TOO MUCH. In Beauty And The Beast It's used very tastefully ...Just like how CGI should be used tastefully instead of being overly used for everything. I don't hate 3D or CGI but I do hate how movies are flooded with them to the point where when you look at a movie preview you think "Oh brother another movie with badly done CGI or 3D effects that are supposed to WOW me! would it kill them to use other effects?".

  • @nuke97 couldn't agree more.

  • @Laroling Thanks!

  • I don't see why people hate on 3D so much.. it all uses the same developmental process, they just take the extra step and create the characters and scenes in 3D...

  • @kitsunechan90 yeah it's hilarious. I'm a 3d animator and we do the same processes we did when we used 2d. I ignore most of the comments because a lot of the time they're from 14 year olds who think they're being nostalgic about movies that were created before they were even born.

  • @ffles Haha nice! I'm just an animation major right now, lol. i don't know too much, but I know enough to respect it. That's cool that your a 3D animator though :O.

  • i bet you that they have no idea how much we love hand drawn animations

  • I hate how most animators are just replying on 3D softwares nowadays. 2D seems way more awesome.

  • i wouldnt mind watching th ehwole movie in a rough sketch mode, no color or fill ins just the raw sketches

  • wow this is absolutely incredible!!!!

  • hand drawn animation is THE BEST kind, because people have to put so much love and thought into it, and THAT is what makes it the best. CGI animation SUCKS! I hate it, its so unrealistic and fake.

  • My God I'm getting tired just watching this :P I'm an artist but never had the patience for animation...I respect these guys so much.

  • Has a new respect for animation now.

  • Sniff! 2D... :'(

  • 2:05 What the narrator said there literally had me cracking up for a few minutes xD

That would probably take me a week or maybe a week and a half to do the rough and then the clean-up afterwards....

  • i do 3d but watching hand drawn with this much quality inspires me more than most 3d animation

  • LOOKING FOR A JOB DOING ANIMATION DRAWING HOW CAN I DO THIS

  • Don't be worried, Tangled is a great movie. Worth watching it in the cinemas.

This film holds an overall approval rating of 93%, based on a sample of 28 reviews. (source: Rotten Tomatoes' Top Critics).

Quentin Tarantino named Tangled as one of his top five favorite films of 2010.

  • I know this way takes more time, but it really just gives the film more heart. The love someone dedicates to each frame, from the sketches to full color really shows in the end result. All this 3D modeled crud has so much less dedication and personality. I love Wall-E, sure, but I want more of this gorgeous 2D.

  • @superskh Yes, I can feel the warmth in Family Guy and all the other lazy traditional animated crap on adult swim. And all the masterpieces that Pixar has released over the past 20 years don't come near those.

    Such a stupid point.

  • @adarahs It's an opinion, I never said you had to agree with it. Besides, those are bad examples because the point of those shows is to make people laugh. I never said what Pixar was showing wasn't amazing, it is. And I know it takes work. But it's HERE, in this kind of work, where I feel the artists get a bit more of themselves into it.

I just like traditional 2D better. 3D can be gorgeous, but it's not what I prefer. You can like whatever you want, just let me like what I like. Okay? :)

  • When animators talk about having a sense of energy when doing rough animation it reminds me of how I describe the process:

Once I get into the flow of doing my rough animations I consider is as a sort of alchemy. Appropriately so since a lot of people see hand-drawn animation as an outdated process, but that certain sense of alchemy I get when putting the graphite onto the page makes it all the more worth while and fun.

So always try to find a muse that drives you in your work.

  • I honestly can't believe that animation is so appealing to me. It is a thank less job and you work for hours on projects that you don't even necessarily like but I guess in the end if one has a passion for something one can't help how they fell.

  • Simply amazing work <3

  • It's all rather overwhelming, how much work actually goes into a film as beautiful as this.

  • Marvelous job!

  • I love it :) they are awesosme animators :)

  • I would do anything to have this job ... so much work goes into animation it's unbelievable. It's all worth it in the end, I mean wow, I can't even fathom the joy after creating such a masterpiece. Just the simple expressions of the characters that really project so many ranges of emotion astound me. Not to mention this is one of my favorite movies of all time. : )

  • This type of work is so under-appreciated. But I personally think that this is the most rewarding job. When you see people marveling at your animation, then you know you did a job well done.

  • Computer animation is great when it's part of telling the story (like for Toy Story), but it can't compare to the close relationship an animator develops with the character through hand-drawn animation!

  • I'm black.

  • haha hand done......crap....ya some crap THAT WAS MADE INTO A MOVIE!

  • The best disney movies were the hand dran and animated ones. They were and always will be :]

  • i suddenly feel like watching these movies again...

  • @heng9876: :) You should. It's how I found my inspiration again to be an animator and continue to draw as an artist, and not to stop or let my dreams go.

  • Beautiful work, I would love to have this job and know how to animate like this...

  • The most awesome people on the planet, and they're stuck behind a piece of paper on a desk. I love these guys so much!!! Being an inbetweener would be a pretty fun job- and not as difficult as being a full-on animator!

  • Those animators are such amazing artists ....wow

  • did he just say systems that add inbetweens?? oO is there such thing?? if there is i'd really need to work with them

  • assistants add inbetweens.

You should check out the Animators survival kit A great book and worth the money but if your poor there are places online you can find a digital copy for free.

  • oh and theres no real system for adding inbetweens beside tweening in flash and such which isn't the same FBF is the best animation ever a tweened animation feels so mechanic while an FBF is alive and personal.

  • This is just so amazing how they make the animations, layer by layer.

  • great inspiring video...i think every animation student should watch this video...thanks for uploading!

  • this has always been my dream.. beeing an animator but now is all about 3D or FLASH but old school has so much soul to it work there is nothing like 2D

  • Right, right.

  • @aandre311 Well, Flash, in my eyes, is just the next step to traditional 2d animation. Guys like Harry Partridge or the makers of the Book of Kells, Cartoon Saloon, utilise flash animation in such a way, that it never shows that it is flash.

Plus alot of animation now is drawn on a wacom or cintiq, ie when Disney did The princess and the frog, all of that was drawn, by hand, digitally, as it cut down on the costs of paper, ink, and pencils. I hope they make more hand drawn films too

  • whoa they truly put their hearts in this

  • I hope to one day work for Disney. I just hope I can help need to the magic. Thank you for the wonderful inside look ^_^.

  • @avencree I hope that i can meet you there too cause I also want to work for Disney :3

  • That would be nice ^w^

  • so inspiring.. thank you so much for uploading. :D

  • Beautiful animation, beautiful characters, beautiful tale... beautiful all! x)

  • dis fokken ninja!

  • I love being an animation student. Seeing these inspire me further. :)

  • OMG Don Hanh!!!!!!!! The producer/director of Atlantis!!!!

  • Ahhh, I want to be an animator. Seeing this featurette inspires me and reminds me why I love 2D so much. Thanks for uploading!

  • Glen Keane <3

  • Key and inbetweens drawings , they are like husband and wife...

  • Animation is a tough, pretty stressing job.

I've tried in my media class in school. It takes patience, and seeing every change of detail. our animation we did took a few weeks...and it was only 5 minutes! I hope one day i can do something like this...

  • This rocks, animation is the best

  • I love animation... simply inspirational.

  • 0:07 Ha, he said it awkwardly.

An animator must create twenty-four drawings for every single second of film.

  • What he meant is that in the movie they use 24 drawings for every second.

  • Yes. That's why I said what I said.

  • yep 2D animators usually draw 12 drawings for a second on screen, place them on 2's in the computer, which makes it 24 drawings per second.

  • This is just... wow... breathtaking...

  • animation is a sleepless job

  • @SHEEN0998777 Amen to THAT!

  • @SHEEN0998777 Nooo way haha. I dunno if you say it's a stupid job or not, but it's nooot sleepless... haha I'm studying in this ;)

Ps :: I know your comment is old ^^

  • @SHEEN0998777 I'm taking animation and illustration and that's even more of a sleepless job lol.

  • Now this is some incredible stuff.

  • TOTALLY AWESOME!

  • Wow, genius. And the product of hard work. Hope I'll one day achieve the status of these guys... heh, good luck to me. :Þ I'm an animation enthusiast and this really inspires me. Thanks for posting.

  • Im in first year of 2d animation and this really inspires me:).....cuz now I terribly suck!!

  • As a 2-d classical animation student, I really wish to thank you for posting this video. The illusion of life is a great bible if you want to learn more about the way this art came to be, and the principles that were really pushed by animators like Art Babbit, Marc Davis, and my favorite 3 animators of all time, Milt Khal, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. To those who are just interested, the animator is not the job u'd get first, u'd start as an in betweener, and progress upward."TIMING, TIMING

  • Amazing. Thank you for this post!

  • This is sick. Now i feel inspired again. let me get busy. lol

  • Thanks for posting, this sort of featurette is a goldmine to an animation enthusiast like me.

  • no kidding....

  • That is impressive.

  • I wonder if I want to be an inbetweener or not. Sometimes the rough early animation seems too blank and jittery before the inbetweener's work here, and sometimes it's flowy. Like Belle's reaction to the beast...so...I'm confused. I think I want to be the more flowy rough animator....unless Belle's reaction in the beginning of the video was already done by an inbetweener.....I'm not making sense am I?

  • "flowy rough animator" - I really hope that's on the job application! :D

I guess at big studios you'd start a career inbetweening anyway, then progress to key animator with more experience and skill. I'm also not entirely sure if Belle was already inbetweened in that shot, maybe some animators do more breakdowns than others?

  • Yes...I'm very stupid with titles. ^^;;; I probably will add it in and check mark it myself on the application.

That seems like a good idea. Thanks :)

  • sad fact is that traditional animation is hard to find work in, everything is in 3D or FLASH!

  • Yeah, except for Disney. =)

  • It's still an alive market, but it's not as big as it used to be. It's turning into 3-D fascism.

  • I wish they did more of this amazing animation instead of computer animation.its tiring to see that 24/7

  • They're maing one at the moment and it's coming out this year.

  • Yep, it's called The Princess and the Frog and it's being directed by the same duo who directed The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Treasure Planet.

  • didn't they say it was postponed or something of the sort .. due to finances .. etc

  • @christianshounen101 That makes no sense. Computer animation can still have "Soul".

  • @PuppyTortus oh God O_O that comment most be old. sorry for that comment I've studied cgi lately and I totaly enjoy it and have lots of respect for it :).....though I still hope to see more handrawn cgi ist really good

  • @christianshounen101 computer animation has really evolved, if you take a look at toy story you see that the people don't feel very life like, but now in toy story 3, the people convey such human emotion that you can finally look like more than one of those videos you see one a plane where they tell you how to survive if the plane crashes.

  • @christianshounen101 there's plenty of traditional animations out there (though admittedly nowhere near enough!) but watch L'Illusioniste(the animation) by Sylvain Chomet, came out this year. Also Chico and Rita will be coming out this year :]

  • @christianshounen101 animation was a real art back then:P

  • @christianshounen101 Digital art is just as hard as traditional art. They work just as hard on it, possibly even harder, and it's just as amazing as the old way of doing animation. I know the artwork has changed but please keep in mind that it's still just as hard for the artists nowadays.

  • @catlover901 You must see Tangled! It is artistically Outstanding!

Nice songs (Golden Globe Awards nominated for Best Original Song ''I See The Light'')

Nice Score by Oscar-winner Alan Menken!

    Incredible animation!

    Beautiful backgrounds!

Legendary animator Glen Keane (Ariel, Beast, Aladdin, Tarzan) is Executive Producer! ;)

  • @catlover901 this kind of argument shouldn't be necessary. I don't care if the artist had a hard time, or if the craft is in itself very hard. 3d animation is suffering from cliche acting and too much 'tude with stupid jokes. There are exceptions, and fortunatelly they are becoming more frequent

  • @christianshounen101 i could watch THIS 24/7 :D

  • @christianshounen101 I don't have a problem with 3D animation as a medium for animation. It's still a great art-form and it makes it much easier for studios to stay in business. However, I hate how everything is becoming 3D. It's making those of us that actually want to do 2D, traditional animation lose hope about doing what we love...

  • Man, I would not want to do final animation. Seems like ALOT of effort.

  • animation is an amazing thing!,cant get enough of it :)

  • I so wanna do that!

  • Hands Down to all of you traditional Animators!

  • GREAT

please please do not remove it!

  • thedse people r so talented

  • wow wee!

  • Yay animation!!!

  • I WANNE be a ANIMATOR:D

  • Good luck.

  • wow....

  • This is the Best Disney film ever...Love the elder cartoons. This one is a real artwork...and that enchanted dark castle woww

  • I 100% agree with you

  • I love BATB! Thanks for uploading this!

  • I wish they show the drowing of Belle Village to

  • I don't think I blinked for the duration of that video, for fear I might miss something! It's astounding how much work goes into an animated movie - but, those animators did a beautiful job. Glenn Keane is truly awesome when it comes to capturing subtle emotions - as are a few of the other artists, I'm sure.

  • I'm a HUGE fan of BatB, Thanks For Posting!

  • Thank u for putting this up... :)

  • this was great! i love animation so much....

  • Thanks for posting! I love art tests/concept work.

  • YAY WOU

  • wow hard to believe all of that done by hand!
