I love the scene in KUA when the cops mistake Hyacinth's home for an opium den. They barge their way in, smash the place up, cosh Richard over the head and bust a cap in Hyacinth's ass for complaining. Brilliantness!

Yes, they did. Especially when done so poorly by Elizabeth (Josephine Tewson). Nonetheless, Elizabeth was a favorite, as was Onslow (Geoffrey Hughes) and Daisy (Judy Cornwell). Hyacinth Bucket (Patricia Routledge) was just an irritation and the person playing Richard Bucket (Clive Swift) couldn't act. Finally, Rose (Shirley Stelfox/Mary Millar) was just horrible and should have been entirely written out of the show.

Every comedic character needs a good schtick to make them recognizable. In the case of Elizabeth is her nerves around Hyacinth's "expensice" china is part of what makes Liz Liz. Since it was the first episode, we got a taste of what was to happen in future episdoes; though this would be one of the few times she broke the "expensive" stuff as opposed to a beaker. A good long running gag was established that made Keeping Up Appearence what it was. It's a 5 star gag plain and simple.
