What do you all think about instinct vs. actual intelligence? I see birds in general as a highly intelligent group of species, but the scientific world insists it's mostly tactics created through evolution and birds do not completely understand the logic of their strategies.
@CleverIdiocy - well, I think there's an episode later in this series featuring a crow in japan that uses traffic on roads to crack nuts. It even waits for the lights to change! Seems like an understanding of it's surroundings and an ability to manipulate concepts is the only way a crow could do that - definitely intelligence in my book.
Wow! The feeding behavor of birds is also amazing. They need a lot of food to power flight. They provide great pollinating and seed dispersal services while doing so. They also help people by keeping the insect pest population down. On the other hand they can also be parasitic vampire style. (not just brood style) There were some nice passerines in this episode. The diet diversity among finch species is remarkable. It even inspired Darwin.
