  • This really is beautiful, i heard it first in a tv show called this is england '88 and just had to find out what it was. i dont think it's "depressing" at all. i dont know why it says that in the description. =)

  • the most beautiful piece ever written. it is a shame the lyrics are meant to put people in guilt and shame for then to seek the Lord, when the feeling the music gives is (to me, anyway) that of being held in the arms of something that says "it's okay".

  • Magnificent... these are boys singing with men, yes?

Ah, the divine clarity of their voices... no man, especially no woman, can match a boy there.

  • Let's not forget the important things here:

    1. Christ paid the debt of our sin once and for all.

    2. He beat death and is now alive

    3. We have free access to the Father through Him

    4. The Holy Spirit now resides in the hearts of those who call on His name.

If you don't have any qualms with the above, then cease with the divisive banter.

  • @178Lawrence I like how you posed a question and immediately attacked as if you knew the answer.

Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. (I Cor 1:10)

I wasn't attacking the crucifix, Lawrence. I sense belligerence, and not much else. Don't let your catholicism overshadow your membership in the Kingdom of God.

  • Jesus, Savior of all who accept you as Lord, thank you for your sacrifice!

The cross, which inflicted temporary suffering upon your flesh, is now empty! It could not contain you! Neither could death or the grave, for you have defeated both and set us free from our bondage to sin and the law!

    HE IS RISEN!!

  • @gwreeves1987

Was that a sad attack on the Crucifix?

I ask you, if a bare cross had stood on Calvary 2000 years ago, what would it mean? Nothing. The only thing that makes the cross a symbol of Chrsitianity is because a certain man died on it. That is all that makes it important. He is risen, but we are called to preach crucified Christ (1 Cor 1:23), he is clearly portrayed on the cross (Gal 4:1).

He is risen, but we Catholics won't ever forget his death either.

  • I'm secular/Atheist but when I hear this I'm instantly transported to another level spiritually. Amazing to reflect by, this.

  • 3:35 is an absolutely haunting picture

  • @acerb45666555 Christ, according to biblical lineage, had a direct descendance from Kind David I believe.

  • I think there was a part that was supposed to go D,C,Bflat,C,D but its replaced by D,C... D,C in a sort of eeeee eee eeee ee tone.

  • Purest rendition I've ever heard. It's as if they were singing in unison!

  • This is the purest blend that I've ever heard of Albioni's Miserere!

  • @magpie4321 it's actually Allegri's Miserere

  • @dirtyrussianspy OOPs, I knew that thank you!

  • @dirtyrussianspy Yes, I was thinking Allegri, but out came Albinoni

  • GOD have mercy of us all !

  • Joy and sadness coexisting

  • this is sublime

  • ths is LOVE

  • may god bless all of you!!!!

  • Very nice, thanks for uploading this. If you like sacred music, please check out my own piano composition "Deo Omnis Gloria" (click on my name and go to Part 5 of the video). All comments welcomed! Thank you.

  • The myriads spell lasts for eternity and resounds into the hearts of receptive mankind. The Angel calls out to them 'Let this message touch you deeply allow a stream of peace to pervade your souls, and may you hear this until you are cleansed of all hatred and bitterness, obey its meaning, it's secret is not known to all, search for the answers and you will truly have serenity in your lives' And the mighty angel's name is Love.

  • I love this piece. I wish I could sing it again but I lost any talent I had when my voice broke as a young man.

  • Beautiful...and so evocative!

Thank you, "Papaverrhoeas" for posting this video.

  • 1:02 Does anyone know what's the name and author of this statue?

  • @Moria90 Yes, It is by Allegri (XVI century) and was written down by Mozart who heard it and remembered it. The Pope at that time forbade anybody copying it or using it outside the Vatican since it was so beautiful. Mozart had a fabulous musical memory. Is it not about the lovlest piece of liturgical music ever written or sung.

    Aled

  • @ifuliki

Ah, now I remember :) I learned that at music class, tnx!

  • one of the most beautiful and spine tingling pieces of music and a real pleasure to sing

  • my theory: since Jesus spoke Aramaic and Assyrians speak Aramaic even today, i think Jesus came from Assyrian ancestory. and somewhere in the family history, they intermarried with Hebrew speakers and they kept theyre old language like anyone would do today! of course im no expert, so my hypothoses may be a wee bit inaccurate! :)

  • spare a thought for poor Saint Stephen too! christianitys first official martyr. stoned to death by a mob.

  • All religious imagery should remind us of Christ. It is interesting that Christians that bash Catholic religious imagery and art seem to really like Movies like The Passion, Ben Hur, and the 10 Commandments.

  • Let's just say it's an astonishingly beautiful piece of music and leave it at that.

  • Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus!

  • "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." That includes ALL of us, regardless of our beliefs. "Judge not lest ye be judged also..." Christ came to show the Way, not have us sow discord in His beloved name. "Love one another as He first loved us."

  • Beautiful music

    Beautiful images

It makes you quiet to reflect on the love of our Lord...

  • Magnificent, congratulations!

    Pax vobiscum

  • thank you for putting images of the True Religion to this video. It pains me to see this holy music abused by infidels and heretics.

  • infidels? heretics?

  • Most people don't know what those words even mean. Jesus was a heretic.

  • wow just wow typical Youtube comment. Heretic comes from Greek word meaning "to choose".

  • True Religion...you mean the Catholic religion? You may call me an infidel and heretic, but religion doesn't save. In Jesus' own words from John 3, "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." Try reading all of John 3. Heaven is not just for Catholics!

  • This is called baptism.

  • Like Angels singing from the Heavens- listening to this brings incredible calm- just beautiful!

  • that really high note? it's a misprint. :P

and i'm being serious. while it was being copied out (by hand in those days) it was misread and written as a top C.

However, that doesn't stop it being an awesome and haunting song.

  • It is a high C note

  • i know it's a top C. It's amazing that anyone can reach it, and what's more amazing is that it's the result of a misprint... :P

still, this is an awesome vid.

  • Gread vid sclorp91, but apparently only kids can reach the high C.

  • Well, I'm sure some female sopranos could reach the high C but I don't know of any male singers who could reach it

  • David Flood at Canterbury can do it at a stretch. Although im sure he spends the next week wishing he had not!

  • Juan Diego Florez and every fully trained opera tenor (save maybe a heldentenor) can hit it. it is expected.

  • well, i'm not well educated in the world of opera/classical singing so i was going by my assumptions based on what i do know. forgive me *embarrassed*

is a heldentenor what one might call a male alto?

  • no, a heldentenor is a wagner tenor. all opera tenors except maybe them can sing them. a male alto is called a countertenor.

  • wagner tenor? heldentenor? these words are gobbledegook i'm afraid... :s

  • wagner tenor.

Richard Wagner? The sort of tenor that sings his music.

btw, im talking about operatic tenors here.

  • Ah right that makes sense. forgive me, i've not had much musical education :S music GCSE is all i've had and that was very basic.

  • really? What was the original supposed to be?

  • no one's sure. but it's a misprint.

  • for me, whilst music was written by peoples own reason, eg, religion or otherwise, we can all appreciate how utterly beautiful the human mind and voice can be. personally i am not religious, but this piece, more so than any other piece shouldnt cause a debate purely becauseit just should be listened to and feel how it personally makes you feel. It is love for the ears.

  • Congrats you started a debate. The Lord blesses the singers with their voices as a gift. But you are right about the awesome beauty. I happen to believe it is among the finest pieces of music ever. Ever. Thank God young Mozart revealed it to the world.

  • A wonderful Catholic hymn. written by Gregorio Allegri- an Italian Roman Catholic priest

  • There is a celestial quality to this very sad hymn

  • This hymn is higher than words

  • The quote descibed about a highly sustained C was by my choir director.

  • It brings all the sorrow of human nature and our sins to light.

  • This song does make me cry!

  • It requires a purely sustained high C with no vibrato in the soprano line, and that's a real stretch for most choirs, as it must be so gracefully and skillfully floated with such control that it sounds absolutely effortless. When done well it is breathtakingly gorgeous. When done less than well, it can be painful to the ears. The innocent tone quality of a well-trained young boy soprano is the ideal"

    Wonderful and EXQUISITELY DONE!!!

  • Most exquisite.

  • I strongly dislike the Catholic Church, but I love this music. Its very artistic, beautiful, and relaxing. The vocals are incredible. Thanks for posting this.

  • Why do you dislike the Catholic Church?

  • I've nothing against Catholics as individuals. But I dislike the Catholic Church for a large number of reasons. To make it short is that I oppose a dogmatic reactionary institution that has tried for centuries to convince the world that any pleasure or happiness on this side of the grave is evil and connected with the devil.

  • I have to totally agree with hector. Why these Christians try to forbidden us the mostest pleasurable experiences, like murdering, stealing, calumning, etc??? Where they see the evil in that?!?!?! And why the hell they try to convince us that we need love our neighbor, learn to forgive, and so many other silly and nonsense things?!?!?!

  • What are you talking about?! WHAT IS PLEASARURABLE in MURDERING and STEALING...?!

  • if this is some kind of sick sarcasm, you don't understand hector's point what so ever.

the least you can do is take his statement seriously.

  • Sorry, but i can't take seriouly a statement which directly came out from some kind of communist propaganda pamphlet.

The least I can do is to make fun of it.

  • No, I was refering to things along the lines of the anti-sex mentality, teaching to hate homosexuals; and so on. If the Catholic Church had its way, people would be shot as sinners for having sex out of wedlock. That's what I mean. Murdering, stealing, lying: three things the church has never really had a problem with. Love you neighbor, forgive: two things the church has always had a problem with. Like their gay neighbors, or the girl across the street who got an abortion.

  • See, can't argue with that. The guy took a misinformation and constructed his logic based on it.

I will not polute this space and obfuscate the otherwise useful comments about the music video.

But here is an advice for everybody: make your own opinion; do not be a slave of other's judgments and conclusions.

    Have a nice day.

  • agreed, and it breeds hate

  • Why don't you like us?

  • I didn't say I didn't like Catholics. What I said was that I dislike the Catholic Church. Meaning, the Pope, the Vatican, the whole hiearchy. I've already posted the reasons.

  • Thank you. Pax.

  • Fantástico!!!

    Essa canção emociona muito...

    é maravilhosa...

tem o poder de levar nossa alma ao céu!!!

  • Very true ...... how does LPG sound .

  • I drive my Jag on a counrty road with a picture'st sun setting in the west with muitiple colours in the sky I listen to this music. I feel that I am flying towards the sunset in the distance but never getting there.

This the last sound on earth for me when I die.

  • "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the Mighty One... I am become Death, the Shatterer of Worlds."

    - J. Robert Oppenheimer, quoting "The Bhagavad Gita"

  • Wow, translated, do you know how much I appreciate that? Now I know what i'm lstening to :) thanks, I love this peice, and now that its translated, this is great!

  • For the complete translation of the entire song, read Psalm 51 (the Psalm David wrote after having Uriah the Hittie, wife of Bathsheeba, put to death).

  • ahhh ...I will pull out the book now..thanks :)

  • What an incredibly beautiful piece of renaissance music this is... so well written, with such passion and substance. I can't stop listening to it, and can't believe I haven't heard this before... simply gorgeous.

  • "Faith is to believe what we can not see, and the reward of our Faith is to see what we believe" Saint Augustine, it is up to u if want to believe, but God is there, and And he shall judge us all.

    God bless

  • its weird how it says in the bible that idoltory is wrong, and love your god with all the your heart mind and strenth, well why do Catholics worship mary!! that is why i am not happy with their ideas, being a christian makes people closer to god

  • My good brother, how told you that the Catholics worship Marry, we don't worship her, we just simply ask her to pray for us, for example if I am having a hard time, I well ask my friends to pray for me, but as Marry said in Luke1. 48 (from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed), so we don't ask her to forgive our sins, but to pray for us in our time of need. the important thing that unite us all is our believe in our lord and savior Jesus Christ.

  • This music is the one of the only good things to come out of religion.

  • Remember that you cannot be a Christian on your own. One should also take part in communal worship. As Christ died for all of us, so must we all worship him together as well as alone. Even Christ sent his apostles in at least twos and He also said that where 2 or 3 are gathered in my name, He is also there

  • Often mankind's suffering has come from superstition, and violence used to enforce it. So the church's tears are ironic indeed. But much that is beautiful in architecture, sculpture, painting, etc., has been created in the misguided service of religion.

  • I don't have to be Catholic to appreciate this beautiful vid. thanks for posting!

  • Bello... pięknie :)

  • Please let me know if I can obtain a private copy for use. Wonderous video.

  • excellent! praise God!

  • This is the best version I've heard! This is excellent! Beautiful blending and very good tuning with a lovely top C!

  • Beautiful, but which choir is singing this please?

  • Most likely the Choir of King's College with Timothy Beasley-Murray (treble) and Gerald Finley (cantor). I happen to have this same version (but somewhat longer) on a CD.

  • Very nice. Originally this piece was sung in the dark without sheet music, with only the alter candles, which added to the mystery. I think it was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII. It was used during matins in the Sistine chapel on Wed and Fri of Holy Week. Beautiful piece. Appropriate imagery.

  • This is absolutely beautiful. I'm not a devout catholic, but i am catholic and I have strong beliefs. This music along with the images put together got me upset. Did you know since the composition of this piece it has been considered the holiest church music by the vatican and is played only once a year in the sistine chapel on maundy thursday if i'm not much mistaken. papaverrhoeas deserves alot of credit for this little clip.

  • Wow I've been trying to find this piece for months now. Specifically "Amplius lavā me ab iniquitate mea: et peccato meo mundā me." It's featured on a game called "Bible Fight" which is hosted at Adultswimdotcom. I was originally directed to the music of Tomás Luis de Victoria but I couldn't find it within his work so I'm glad that I finally found the real work.

  • I love this video

  • Absolutely beautiful singing, really incredible. I think this is the most exquisite recording I've heard. Please can you tell me which choir sings this shorter version??

  • Truly awesome video. Incredibly beautiful music, in addition to an outstanding choice of imagery to go along with it.
