im sure youve answered this in one of the previous comments but what format of video would you suggest using to import into ffmpegx? and what site do you use to get videos off of youtube?
@datamosher my exported avi files only play the first frame for the duration of the clip. i think i might be missing the mpeg2enc binary... i dont think the file that came with the onestopdatamoshkit.zip is the right one. is there anywhere i can get that binary other than that .zip file?
@datamosher i edited all the clips i wanted together in final cut express and i exported it as a .mov movie file but when i run that file through ffmpeg the result is just a black screen...ive tried skipping ffmep and going straight to avidemux but then the effect doesnt trigger. HELP!!!!
Anyone know of a non-linear editing program that works as a supplement for Avidemux? The interface is sorta hard to work with if you have more than two clips you wanna mosh.
you can actually edit all your clips in any NLE and export as a single file to bring through ffmpeg and avidemux - but know that after pretty much every cut, the first frame of the new shot will become an i-frame, so make sure to add a frame after every cut before you export. youll delete all these extra frames in avidemux, then your stuff will be exactly in sync with what you edited originally
I learned how to datamosh for pc, message me if you want a tutorial for pc. if enough people want to learn it for PC i will make one so message me or comment my datamosh video
i just chose a random application i found and it fixed it. i think it was called "problem solver" or something that obvious. it's not there now, so i don't know what it was. just search your applications folder and make a random choice. maybe that will work for you.
but then again it's not ultimately working for me, so maybe don't take my advice.
i bring the avi files from ffmpeg into avidemux, append, delete all the iframes but the first, and then save it as an avi file (and yes, i select "no" for the smart copy thing)
but i still get a black screen when i try and watch the video in quicktime.
I can do basically the same thing in Visual Jockey Gold. I had to get a FXC plugin for it but it works perfectly. I hate macintosh there is sooo little compatibility.

this really pissed me off... i hate apple to begin with, only ppl who dont know how to use computers use macintosh, and pc is way much better in many ways, let my friend explain hes beter at it, but i would totally prefer using a windows version... im angry...
OK, I think I have it worked out. I was having problems dropping .movs into ffmegx. I would do the encode and wind up with just black. However, when I converted clips to AVIs first before doing the non-I-frame re-encode, that worked OK. But I'm still confused by the editing structure in AVIdeMux. When you append a 2nd clip, at what point is the effect being triggered? How do you trigger the mosh to happen at specific points, as in your videos?
Thanks for posting all this--however, I've gone through the whole process several times, and I'm not getting the effect to trigger. I just get the two clips, one after the other. I also note that the ffmpegx conversion does not seems to be eliminating all the i-frames--I'm still having to manually delete a bunch of them. Suggestions?
Yeah ffmpegx will insert i-frames where it's convinced there's been a cut, such as when there's actually a cut or when there's enough movement in a frame that it thinks there's a cut. So you have to do a little extra legwork, especially if you made a cut and want the moshes to be in sync with the edits.
But in answer to your question: are you sure you're saying "No" when it asks if you'd like to smart copy? This is what makes it ignore the mistakes you put into it...
@datamosher I have, as far as i can tell, converted my .mov into an .avi using ffmpeg (with ffe as a front end) and managed to change most of the frames into p-frames instead of i-frames. In Avidemux 2.5.3 i then cut and paste a few p-frames repeatedly, and instead of the desired "mosh" effect, it just repeats it, like cutting and pasting regular video.
Hey! Thanks so much for the kit and tutorials. I practiced by putting two clips together and that worked out nicely however when I tried to do another, the .mov clips I had ready to encode wouldn't. The ffmpegX progress window would show it encoding and it would finish however no .avi would be created on the desktop. Does it have anything to do with the length of the clips? These are a little shorter. I have all the binaries and presets right so I don't know what the problem is.
hm. this is curious. are you naming the new clips differently than the last ones? sometimes when you encode a clip that has the same name as something, ffmpeg has to write over the old file, and that can cause problems. also check to make sure that the file's destination is on the desktop (the second line at the top of the ffmpeg window) and not somewhere else...
also: how quickly is the ffmpegx progress bar going? if it dings instantaneously (within 1 second), then that actually means there was an error and no conversion was made. if so, the problem could be a multitude of things, many of which I might not be able to diagnose. try encoding a totally different clip and see if it persists. if so, you can send me screenshots of your settings and i'll try and pinpoint the problem...
I followed all of your steps, but my quicktime screen turns black whenever I try to play the clip I made. when I used avidemux2 I could see the clips. Is there something wrong with my quicktime or am I just doing it wrong?
I've heard that virtualdub may work, but haven't gotten a real confirmation about that... but if it does for you, please let me know, I'd like to put out a windows-users (or even linux-users) kit as well...
Actually there's a Philadelphia-based artist named Ramsey Arnaoot who developed a live datamoshing system called the Audio-Visual Sampling Synthesizer, which I believe takes advantage of the fact that if you convert videos to wmv's with no i-frames, and skip between the files in VLC, it will datamosh them together. Of course, this isn't as live as you're thinking of.... but if you can figure out how to datamosh actual live feeds, that would be about the most kickass thing imaginable.
Do you know of any way to do this IN REAL TIME? I wondered how a live performance would look (I'm a musician...using the term loosely) if you projected a live feed of the performers with various clips randomly (or intentionally) interspersed. Or, if the performance was just feedbacked into/from the projection. I'm not sure, but I think U2 did something like this on their Zooropa tour.

@Clare1227 a google search turned up this:Download Avidemux from it’s official repository ;
Open the DMG archive and copy “avidemux2″ to your “Applications” folder ;
Browse to the “Applications” folder, select “avidemux2″ and select the “Show Package Content” option ;
Browse to “Contents/Resources/lib” and delete the “libiconv.2.dylib” and “libxml2.2.dylib” files ;
Browse back to the “Applications” folder and start “avidemux2″.
