That's a rather distinctive label on that Columbia. Is it unusual, special... or it is ordinary and common? (I haven't seen - or at least haven't noticed - that one before; but that means little. There's alot I haven't seen before!)
This 'FLAG' label was used by Columbia from Dec, 1923 - Mar 1925 and coincided with the change in their numbering system from Axxxx to xxxx-D series. There was a big promotion touting the new 3 ply construction of the records and this label was used to distinguish this new process. With slight color variations of the background, it was used for all Columbias issued during this period. The label was changed again in 1925 to herald the new 'ELECTRIC PROCESS'
@cdbpdx Thanks for the great info. The Electircal Process label is familiar to me from my own modest collection, but thanks to the digital age I'm now familiar with so many more recordings than I'll ever own (or even see!). Cylinder era recordings have especially benefitted from digital transmission, without which most never would be heard at all.
What was the "3 ply construction"? That wasn't the paper / fiber "cardboard" center layer, was it? That came much later; or am I wrong?
