@metalore St. George is one of the most venerated saints in Catholicism, and patron saint of England (among many other countries), who's emblem - St. George's Cross, is still England's national flag.
@metalore He was a man offered power and land by the Emperor of Rome if he would convert to paganism. He refused to convert, even though it would grant him power, lands, money, and reknown. The Emperor tried again to dissuade him as George was the son of one of his allies, but George was stalwart, again refusing though it would mean his death if he did not. He was executed, but never once did he beg, cower, or back down. In that, he showed bravery, loyalty, and faith even unto death.
Boorman and Screenwriter Rospo Pallenberg did not only used Malllory's LaMorte d'Arthur as their inspiration. They also took snippets from Chretien de Troyes 13th Century work Lancelot, le Chevalier de la Charrette and also Iddyls of The King by Lord Tennyson. Even the scene with Lancelot and Guinvere waking up with Excalibur between them is taken from Wagner's Tristan et Iseult (as well as the music).
@sugarcubicle This film is based in a french book called La morte di Artù by Sir Thomas Malory. It's full of simbolism and just try to express the legend under optic of the romanticism. The value of the knight as hero, the importance of his commitment to the truth.
The myth was born around 500 a.c. and is a syncretism between the christianity and the celtic tradition. I think you know that. Anyway, this legend is awesome.
There is a game based in ths film: Knights of the Round.
This is one of the best scenes ever filmed. I'm a huge movie buff and have many, many favorite scenes. But this tops them all. Thanks for posting.

Is this based on actual legend, or did Boorman make this up himself? Either way its brilliant.

You can see his arms trembling. He wanted to kill Arthur but the power was too great and at the last minute...did the right thing!
