I grew up listening to R.E.M.I bought Murmur the year it came out (1983).I was 16 years old and their music has painted the landscape of my life ever since. One of the things that I find most remarkable about their carrer is their incredible consistancey. They've NEVER made a bad album. Some less popular, sure, but bad?NEVER.I was so sad when I heard that they were breaking up,but I also felt a huge sense of gratitude for having the privilage of their music in my life.Thank you guys.It was an HONOR.
I want to form a 3rd Shift Militia. We'll take over the world when everyone else is sleeping. You might think that military bases and such still have guards at night, but guess what? They're 3rd shift, too.
@raceofdoom Because it has already been a hit many years ago. And old songs like this doesn't become hits again. People may like them, but they aren't hits because of that.
No one quite like REM can comment on our busy existence in quite this way - just listened to "Imitation" - had to stem the tears (my Mother notices that video and her comments about if before her death is painful to remember). Don't know why this one is affecting me and I was never a "huge REM fan" (I'm careful to put that in quotations) Some of the stuff they did was like brillian art - not everything of course but they tried hard to get that I think @ Andrewgoo - we all get it you know..
I think the ONLY song I have ever heard by them is "Losing My Religion". Pretty much everyone has heard that one. Either way though, I never heard anything else by them and well, all their other songs probably suck. So good riddance. One less shitty band out of...uh...about 99999999999999999999999. Just another 99999999999999999999998 to break up now and the world will be a better place. :)

Anyone else think the intro sounds a bit like the music from the pixar film Up? Funny as this song is from an album by the same name!

In construction terms, this is the best song ever recorded - it's just brilliant.
Lennon and Mc couldn't have written and composed this without a break where this ignores the break.
This is Stipe's last great song, and his best.
