@hackensac You're right. The man who voiced Popeye at the same time as this episode was Jack Mercer. Jack was also a story writer at the Fleischer/Famous studio.
Yeah, back then, Superman's back story hadn't been delved into within the comics, so the cartoon made one up. I don't think they really talked about his being from Smallville until about the 60s.
