@loquayrocks Jimi is alleged to have said much the same about Jimmy Page too, and IMO Jimi, Jimmy and Rory are the holy trinity of guitar maestros who could not only deliver in the studio, but also wipe the floor with anyone live too. I think it's fair to say that we shall never see their like again.

I saw him open on the Boston Common for Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown (it was right after Deuce has come out). The crowd went nuts and kept begging for him to come back. Fleetwood Mac kept cutting their songs short because of the chants of "Rory! Rory!, then the same thing happened to Savoy Brown (who were really big at the time).
I love this song but feel sadness because he has begun to show the effects of the steroids that were misprescibed for him and eventually led to his untimely death.
I am kicking myself for not going to see him in concert-would've been awesome--thank God for the u- tube so I and others can see him whenever we want!! Cheers!!
@walesdad More than ably. I always thought that, of all Rory' Gallagher tunes I've heard, this was the best showcase for their talents. Killer stuff all around.
Let me guess... who's number at one? John Meyer ? Oh, maybe that rip off artist Jimmy Page? Leaving this man out is sacrilege IMO....sshhheeeeshhhh !!!

who ever is doing sound, the band sounds great But wheres RORYS Guitar!! The Bass is sooooo loud, and hes great butt???? Where the f... is RORY in this mix, Sound Man?? Just venting.
@stevevc627 Rory always had the bass up loud, its to make up for the lack of a 2nd guitarist. The sound is great here, from a sound engineers perspective. Its the quality from the video cameras that dampening it here. The bass has to largely overpower in a 3 piece.
@nigellinaballerina thanks for the info... i've always thought that if i had a band i'd make the base louder than the guitar because it always sound better that way. Probably why this is one of rorys best songs.
@nigellinaballerina I always loved that. You are right. No argument from me. The bass should be louder. I just really couldnt hear the man enough and is most likely due to the recording.Peace.
Rory epitomizes rock music. From his early roots in the classic rock genre, he delivered pure energy from a single guitar with his monster riffs and sweet solos. Rory played primarily with only a bassist and drummer, but still produced huge sound live and in the studio, setting the stage for many of the hard rock bands that followed. RIP Rory!
To leave Rory out of any greatest ax list is akin to leaving off Jimi, EC, Gilmore or Beck. Rory had 'it' and listening and watching always shows me what some truly great music really is. Badly missed. The lists are all BS anyway.
yes its sad, because rolling stone and all those kinda magazine bullshit lists, are voted on by the general public not musicians or people of any good musical taste, which is why those lists are a joke.
I listen to Jimi, SRV, Ritchie Blackmore, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, and I say "that is great stuff". Then I come back to Rory and I say, "yep, that's it". Rory had a certain something I've never heard from any one. He was beyond a genius, to something else. I don't know what.
I grew up listening to Beatles, Stones, then got into Hendrix, Clapton and Johnny Winter, then later, SRV. Only discovered Rory about 2 years ago, and am just blown away. What an unbelieveable talent. I have to say he's my favorite.
I first heard this song whenever I visited Ireland. The first song I ever heard by him. It was a compilation CD. Been a fan ever since. Rory has a special place in my heart, he made me want to learn how to play guitar. A million thanks for posting this and to Rory.
hendrix himself said rory was the best guitarist... "what does it feel like to be the greatest guitarist?" "i dont know man ask rory gallagher".
but thats not important tbh, they're both great at what they do which is different things, hendrix was just more successful on the mainstream therefore influenced more people as expected, doesnt mean rory is nowhere near as competent as jimi, thats just stupid making claims like that
wow! someone UNDERSTOOD the importance of roy buchanan AND rory ! great! because you are RIGHT! these are the very best, man! clapton is SUCH a bore these days, no? I mean, those 5 DUANE ALLMAN / CLAPTON parts of a duet by both are really thrilling but mainly because of DUANES slide ... check also LUTHER ALLISON and of course ELMORE JAMES and do not forget ALBERT COLLINS; he is some MADMAN of the blues!! there is a song there he plays with roy buchanan, too.
Not a big fan of Duane Allman although i respect his prowess. But check out the song Loan Me a Dime from Boz Scaggs 1st lp-Duane plays lead w/o a slide! The only time I think he's ever done so. And yeah, Clapton has been a bore for over 30 years now. He's just on autopilot. I can't understand why either. Any self respecting guitarist wants to at least keep reinventing themselves around their peers.

Thats because the 'new guys' can't do this stuff..Tom Morello and Kurt Cobain have a lot to answer for...Rory was a fucking legend......listen to 'Out on the western plain, or ' Going to my hometown' he could play anything.......
he's the best, more feeling and magic that hendrix and all, he is the most forgotten and underrated guitarist in history. hendrix is the most famous. By the way, your bands aerosmith and guns and roses are very bad and very commercial. don't take it badly.

Rory plays inside the strings, with force but with class. Surprised at the way he works the top knob instead of a vibrato bar. This guy was a natural born original.
This must be an awfully rare, special clip to see Gerry McAvoy singing!! Very nice! ;) Thankfully we have these clips since Rory's no longer here, especially for those of us daft enough never to have seen him (but still be influenced by him).
Sorry Richie but after careful consideration he is my overall favorite. Plus I imagine if he were still alive he wouldn't rudely snub me after his show you prick!
Used to play this on stage in the school band. Was a ball ache as a 16 year old trying to sing like him. Something to aspire to though. God bless ya Rory. X
It sould be illegal to allow this music to be aired to the public...it makes you feel stupid when you try to duplicate his talents on your own guitar.
It sounds even better on DVD!! The only weird thing is the seated audience. Apparently the film company warned them before the show to stay in their seats (although some of them couldn't contain themselves towards the end). Must've felt pretty strange for Rory & the band too, but it's a great show nonetheless.
I think that was 1987 was it, I remember watching it on irish TV. The rare times RTE actually showed him in the eighties. The first time I saw him was at the Self Aid concert in dublin in 1986 which was televised. Its great now being able to view so much of his material. I cannot understand why VH1 does not show some of his videos.
yea maybe you are right vh1 is not as good as it was, they showed really good stuff a few years ago when they were trying to establish themselves. I was listening to irish radio yesterday and a woman came on from australia, she said she came from australia to ireland especially for the rory gallagher festival in ballyshannon. She could not believe how good an arist he was. The radio staff were a bit bemused that she came all that way for rory gallagher, not even U2 could generate that dedication
well..So am I, planning to go to to Ireland almost only on purpose to go to the Ballyshannon festival too.. By the way, It sounds not so impressive than Australia, I'm from France, is not so far after all ;)
A dedication for Joey's Birthday on 19th November, sent with love and laughter :D)) Our Rory rocking at his best - RoryOn!!

Can't tell if he looks more like Pippin or like Geddy Lee lol

It sounds even better on DVD!! The only weird thing is the seated audience. Apparently the film company warned them before the show to stay in their seats (although some of them couldn't contain themselves towards the end). Must've felt pretty strange for Rory & the band too, but it's a great show nonetheless.

I think that was 1987 was it, I remember watching it on irish TV. The rare times RTE actually showed him in the eighties. The first time I saw him was at the Self Aid concert in dublin in 1986 which was televised. Its great now being able to view so much of his material. I cannot understand why VH1 does not show some of his videos.

i think it's just as well they don't show him on vh1, rory was the peoples musician. i reckon it would be sinful! but what do you reckon?
muzicalman 4 years ago
yea maybe you are right vh1 is not as good as it was, they showed really good stuff a few years ago when they were trying to establish themselves. I was listening to irish radio yesterday and a woman came on from australia, she said she came from australia to ireland especially for the rory gallagher festival in ballyshannon. She could not believe how good an arist he was. The radio staff were a bit bemused that she came all that way for rory gallagher, not even U2 could generate that dedication

exactly.
