  • My computer lags Portal 2 on high settings and you are saying if i use this method the video file isnt going to lag as normally?

  • @warnightify did you even watch the tutorial? 0:33 well fucking explained.

  • Comment removed

  • Question: I have seen various Portal videos panning across the scenery and such, seemingly in third-person perspective, rather than first. Is it possible to do this, or have they just noclipped and removed the portal gun and such? If it is possible, how do we do this?

  • @Izzy41630 it's called Smoothing, google it. It works for any source engine based games

  • Where are you getting the sampling settings from? like x4-x128. Is this in vegas?

  • @MinecraftUnited Nvm i feel dumb. Didn't see the very end. Each factor is multiplied. So i would record at a high fps and put it into vegas at a set framerate and it will automatically resample it to my set fps in vegas. Like if my vegas fps was 30 i would record in 960 to get x32 resample.

  • When I play back the demo the textures are all screwed up. The recording is at the relaxation vault in chapter 1, when you first meet Wheatley. But when I play back the demo, all I see is cracked brown tile everywhere. Please help. What am I doing wrong?

  • Could you please reply? I've followed your methods and steps as best as i can, but after a few attempts i still get the same result. The video footage is about 4X as fast as normal, but the audio remains the same. I'm not sure if it is me stuffing something up with the fps but i'd appreciate it if you could give me some advice on how to stop this from happening.

    I uploaded the video, watch?v=6l6qlsLoa-A&

It also doesn't appear to be in 720p X.X

  • @TheBoredstiff To take care of your first problem, you probably forgot typing host_framerate or set the wrong framerate in VirtualDub, try to set them both to 60 and tell me if it works then

  • so I can play with lowest settings and get highest quality for video? or?

  • @StealthB90 yep

  • Perfect! As you always want it ;) Great work, thank you very much. Everyone who knows this video should tell his friends so this becomes the official source recorder tutorial. Cuz in my opinion, it is. :3

  • I got an AviSynth script error:

DirectShowSource:Renderfile, the filter graph manager won't talk to me

I did everything like you do in this video.

I download the .exe of it, does that matter?

  • @jope12 What's your OS? Go to ffdshow, Video Decoder configuration / codecs and change the VC1-Codec from Disabled to libavcodec, if that doesn't work, try reinstalling Megui and/or ffdshow.

  • @hl2mukkel Windows 7 is my OS. And where is this ffdshow? This is my first time using these programs. Heck, doing any video like this to be exact :D

  • @jope12 Well, search the error information on google again :P it's pretty difficult and troublesome to help you through YouTube Comments, PM me if you need further details and/or I can help you out through Steam.

  • @hl2mukkel I'm going away for a while. I'll return to it at a later date and PM you after what i find.

  • nvm I found it :D

  • Whats the song in the beginning?

  • What's the name of the music which starts to play at the "Motion Blur" tier?

  • @InstantMix Kill City

  • So i have to do that on every single video? I am feeling about weird... is it took soo much time? And so much space? Is 150 GB enough to take that? The blur makes it take soo much space? Totally it takes 1 hour to complete whole video? And what if i dont add motion blur? I am afraid of BSOD so can you help me with that machine?

  • @warnightify hey; yep; depends on your quality; yep; yep; not this one here; that's fine; I've never received a BSOD in 3 years of moviemaking.

  • Hey, its me again. I have problem to record on l4d 2, after i record a demo, on a server, not on singleplayer, i try to start a movie doing the steps on your video. After the demo stops, when i type endmovie, the console says: "No video started". Why this is appearing?

  • @KayoDuck777 You can't record a movie during demorecording, type record demo and stop, and later on, type startmovie playdemo demo endmovie

  • Awesome tutorial, however when I feel lazy I just record with PlayClaw, IMO it's much better than Fraps. Just saying.

  • @PeterTechGuyy It's much better. But for me it's recording in an awkward codec, I dislike that. And for me, this is simple enough. And the avi method.

    /watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FCAF8CHZkzM#t=101s

Is much much simpler. You even get to encode in your codec while recording. Meaning once you're done inside portal, you're ready for upload. Most people don't post raw content tho so i guess that doesn't matter.

  • In Virtual Dub does it matter if the "Match video to audio" option in the frame rate window differ from the setting I used? (e.g host_framerate 30 but vdub says it should be 29.997 etc.) Should I still try to save as my original frame rate or use the one it suggests? Thanks :)

  • @omgfire1 Indeed it matters, some people say you should generally choose match video to audio, but I don't. It happens if you bind startmovie to a key as far as I know :| I would choose Match Video to Audio and modify it later. Although 0.003 is so low, I think in this case it doesn't matter ;)

  • Oh, thanks, it worked.

Keep up the great work mate :).

  • @KinGSel0 np :) & cheers!

  • @hl2mukkel btw, will you do some TF2 videos / clips in the future?

    I really enjoy those.

  • @KinGSel0 Thanks, but I'm not too sure about that :(

  • R.I.P Steve job. :)

  • Really nice turorial, Aron!

What Media Player would you recommend, tho?

I tested several ones, and my recordings always lagged because the size of it is way too big.

  • @KinGSel0 Hey,

for videos I recommend: vlc media player

    for audio I recommend: foobar2000

for fraps/uncompressed videos I recommend: wmp

& Indeed it'll lag when you didn't encode it, try rendering it in MeGUI and if it still lags, decrease your bitrate

  • I love the source recording video, I can use it for tf2 right :3? oh btw the songs looks creepy.

  • @rayne125 Thanks :) Yes you can & the songs are from portal 2 :P

  • @hl2mukkel The SRC2 Demo how to use? ._.

  • @rayne125 xD Read the thread about it ;o)

  • @hl2mukkel i mean use when recording game orr..?

  • @rayne125 nah check the link regarding srcdemo2 in the description :P

  • Sir, you're a Wizard!

  • I love you, that's exactly what i need. I'm writing a short movie and atm using GMOD to do the story boarding. being able to film is going to make it a lot easier to show people what to do. Now i just have to figure out how to get lip sych to work on windows 7. (you can import animations from faceposer to gmod right?)

  • @Gate21IsClosed I'm not sure about that :( But Source Recorder defnetly does a good job in gmod :) especially when having a lot of elements in your vid

  • @hl2mukkel thanks for the answer! i googled around a bit and it seems that since vista lip synching is broken because valve didn't update the sdk, but didn't they promise a big update because they said even they themselves couldn't use the old version anymore? I guess i'll just wait for that, or install XP on my old machine.

i tried it yesterday and even though i realized i need a bigger external HD its fun and works well, thanks again!

  • @hl2mukkel oh, one thing i forgot to ask: how did you make the camera move like that in the beginning? did you just no clip around and recorded that?

  • @Gate21IsClosed It's No problem :) It's called smoothing, only works for the source engine :0

  • @bazaromagnatas :oD!

  • OMG! THANK YOU! So helpful! Now I can record to my external Hard drive without risking loss of video cos of lack of space! :D

  • @car45j34 Np :)

  • Very helpful! Definaly gonna try it out! :)

  • i dont even have p2 xD :(

  • Hi Aron :D

    Nice vid :D

  • Hey man! Is me again. I want to know if i can do all this stuff on Left 4 Dead 2 and on Team Fortress 2. Can you help me how i make demo on this games and make a movie?

  • @KayoDuck777 Yes, it's exactly the same in other Source-Engine based games, just go through the steps I made in this video

  • O_o mad ninja skillz u got there :)

  • Nicht schlecht =)

  • Thank you for this. Not because I'm going to use it (I don't make videos), but because you've increased the average quality of all source-related youtube videos.

  • @guyboy625 Thanks :)

  • Why just dont use a decent screenrecorder instead of going through all this ? :DD::D :P. I like the way this tutorial is constructed though ;) good work, mate!

  • @albehe97 Lol :P That was the whole purpose of the tutorial: constant smoothness

  • Comment removed

  • @WoodenZigzagoon Yep it'S true and I'm already doing that, yet fraps still compresses the video and if its just a little, also the sound has a worse quality because its recorded analog while source recorder processes the sounds digital. Also, even if you got a mad computer, if the server is loading files and the game you play it bad coded (at this part at least) you'll get lags, no matter what your computer can compute (only comps of companies probably lol)

  • Thank you very much for making this, especially the framerate comparrisons :)

  • Well done Aron

  • neat

  • wow.

    WOW.

  • Nice!
