Yeah, I watched quite a few guys burn up 500+ bucks-worth of rubber in just a few hours. The cops did show up, but they left us alone. Sun evening, just after Porky's sold their last burger & closed the doors for good, the cops closed University Ave for blocks & everyone did burn-outs 'til dawn. In 40+ years of hot-rodding, I've never seen anything quite like it. Generations of hotrodders will tell their kids about Porky's last weekend - when we took over University Ave!
I think that every small town in america that ever had a drive in whether it be shut down or still active should be doing this. I have a 1965 mustang coupe that my father and i are going to build as a gasser and i would love to burn the $h!t out of my wheels a few times just for fun.
It was a one-time thing. After 60+ years, Porky's closed the doors for good. We took our cars out of storage early last spring for one last weekend at 'the winking pig'. This took place in the middle of St. Paul on a major road. None of it was planned, nor was it sanctioned. It just happened. We stopped traffic for over 2 days & the police left us alone.
I wish that Mpls/St. Paul would do what some other cities have done & block off a street for weekend races.
Thanks for watching! Yeah - I miss the place - and the Uni scene. I had been cruising Uni in my '87 GN & hanging out at Porky's since the mid-90s. For awhile there, we had a mini-Woodward thing going. The Uni/Porky's cruise was considered one of the top 5 must-do cruises in the US for auto buffs. I wonder if we'll see anything like it again around here.
i drive on this street all the time and its crazy now all this is gone and the light rails are set up in this very spot
