this is totally normal i had my auto from 96k to 240k. auto accords in these years were 4 speed autos. but in 4rth when you let off in 4rth the torgue converter fully engages and its almost like a fifth gear in a way
When cruising in high gear, and you lightly press the throttle to accelerate the torque converter clutch in most auto cars will unlock to get the engine revs up a bit. This is to get the most out of that little bit of extra throttle you are giving it. In your case, it probably unlocks thinking you want to lightly accelerate, and doesn't re lock again once you let your foot off the gas - figuring you are probably wanting to slow down.
that is when the torque converter lockup is used to conserve energy it drops the rpms by making a direct connection between the engine and transmission instead of through fluid since your crusing in top gear and lower rpms help gas mileage
The torque converter is already locked when the car is running at 50 MPH and 2,000 RPM. In the 2nd have of the video, its running closer to 1,500 RPM, and over 50 MPH. Thanks for trying though. I'm well aware of what the T.C. is. :)
ok i got some what of a problem i got a 97 accord and when i turn it on its fine its just wen i try puting it into gear the stick doesent want to move and it only does it sometimes any suggestions?
torque converters don't transmit power in the reverse direction very well unless the lockup clutch is activated. if the clutch disengages while coasting downhill because you tapped the gas I would expect the rpms to drop down like the engine is close to idling.
It all depends on whether the wheels are driving the engine or the engine is driving the wheels. If you for example put it into 1 (locks it into 1st) at 20mph, go on and off the gas, the car will do this too. That's automatic transmission for you.
The torque converter is already locked at 50MPH and 2000 RPM. Unlocked, its close to 2,300RPM at that speed. I've had the car long enough to know this.
And kai, no, it's not downshifting. It is in 4th the whole time, with the torque converter locked up. This is acting as if the gear disengages, like putting it in neutral.

It's not upshifting. It was in fourth by 35 MPH.

coasting down a hill? just giving it a bit of gas and then letting off is telling it to shift to high gear and lockup.
try doing highway speed (maybe going up a hill even) in hard acceleration. let off the gas and then give it just a bit. it should lock up.

Deltaboy,
The odometer went bad and was replaced at 112,000 miles. The car now reads over 66,000 miles, which means it has over 178,000.
UABBlazers87 4 years ago
Mine got 210,000 =(
AyashiFX55 3 years ago
Mine is about to hit 200,000 but my speedometer and odometer act up so it is probably well over by a few thousand or even more.

Torque converters can do a bit of a freewheel. 300-400rpm max, mine does this too (goes even slower than you'd expect it to in the highest gear)
