Well, one thing you can say about Christianity is that there are at least many followers who are willing to enter into semi-rational debates with freethinkers. I have noticed this too. In my discussions with Muslims, I meet an overwhelming number who expect me to just take their word as truth on anything related to Islam, with no questions asked. As someone who was raised Muslim (now atheist), I think the difference between Islam and Christianity is that Christianity's hold in the western world has been eroded by hundreds of years of scientific contradiction.
After being humiliated enough times by being wrong about things like geocentrism, the church has been tamed. Heresy is no longer fatal.
Scientific and secular thought will eventually permeate widely in Islamic countries. Give it about 50-100 years.
It might take a lot longer in countries like Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Qatar, Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Afghanistan, Mauritania and Pakistan where people are executed if they are convicted of apostasy. It's already difficult to de-convert because of things such as ostracization but, add to that the fear of execution and public deconversion becomes almost impossible to expect of anyone. For now, all we can hope for is private deconversions until the majority are paying only lip service to Islam.
Pakistan is a special case. In certain cities, they are quite liberal. But in certain other areas, they are most certainly not. A sword is a symbol of war, of dividing people. Jesus was not saying, "I didn't bring peace, but I brought you a sword to fight for peace", he said, "I didn't bring peace, but a sword". Even if you interpret that metaphorically, he's saying that his teachings will divide people and cause unrest - the opposite of peace. This is made more clear by the following verses in Matthew 10:35-36, where Jesus says just that, that he will divide families and households. Jesus was NOT any prince of peace.

Well, one thing you can say about Christianity is that there are at least many followers who are willing to enter into semi-rational debates with freethinkers. Muslims, on the other hand, seem to be ultra-indoctrinated to the point where they honestly believe that all non-Muslims are, in some way, Satanic, all in the same category. As someone who was raised Muslim (now atheist), I think the difference between Islam and Christianity is that Christianity's hold in the western world has been eroded by hundreds of years of scientific contradiction.
After being humiliated enough times by being wrong about things like geocentrism, the church has been tamed. Heresy is no longer fatal.
Scientific and secular thought will eventually permeate widely in Islamic countries. Give it about 50-100 years.

It might take a lot longer in countries like Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Qatar, Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Afghanistan, Mauritania and Pakistan where people are executed if they are convicted of apostasy. It's already difficult to de-convert because of things such as ostracization but, add to that the fear of execution and public deconversion becomes almost impossible to expect of anyone. For now, all we can hope for is private deconversions until the majority are paying only lip service to Islam.
