  • If you're from Philly you know this was the ultimate Jersey Shore song!! (The Steel Pier Show!)

  • We play this in pep band.

  • Now we use to get down on this song in the 60's! Boy I miss those days!

  • The Horse, Grazing in the Grass, Tighten Up, Stone Soul Picnic, summer of 68....

  • I heard this song while going across the Walt Whitman bridge in Philly!

  • i luv this song !

  • Giddyup!!!

  • my sister loves this song shes 25

  • This is good!!

  • i never knew the name of this, high school sports, jazz band

  • I remember this song back in the late 60's. I was listening to it on the soul stations back in Cleveland, Ohio, WJMO-1490 and WABQ-1540. I was a junior in high school at the time. I'm now living in Prescott, Arizona.

  • boy couldnt wait to friday nights to get to youth center in Moultrie , Ga and put that

quarter in the juke box and dothe horse. what a memory and i am 60 now.

  • So good!!!

  • Thanks,

    Good, i am french.

    Cool.

    Natacha.

  • You're welcome, Natacha-san!!

    Otaku3 (^_^)/

  • this track is big in the uk but only to true soul brothers

  • My favorite during high school. I brought my trumpet to college and showed the yupsters how a show band should do this. I could really twirl that thing in those days.

  • i am a cheerleader at my high school, i love cheering to this song at our games. And its funny cause our school mascot is a horse and the song is called the horse:)

  • WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD MUSIC GONE???? ESPECIALLY THE INSTRUMENTALS???? I BET 99% OF THE KIDS TODAY DON'T KNOW WHAT A INSTRUMENTAL IS. THIS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES........

  • if i were a boxer, this would be like my entrance theme

  • One of the funkiest guitar rhythms in history between 0:14 to 0:43.

  • Ah.... I love being a freshman trumpet player... This is my favorite stands tune! Though I'm second trumpet... =/

  • @B1gB0ss45 ahh trumpets.

Our director was afraid our trumpets would "blow [their] chops before the halftime preformance."

    But we played it anyway.

    GO BAND!

  • @Scholarstorm luckily for me I'm second trumpet! But either way, by the end of our halftime show, my chops are blown... Just 'cause I'm second trumpet doesn't mean I'm not as good as the first trumpets... One is a senior (so he's 1st trumpet by seniority) and our other first trumpet is just good (though he talks about how he never wanted to be in band..... which pisses me off...). But I'm the 1st 2ND trumpet! =P

  • @B1gB0ss45 lol i love playing trumpet too :) Its a bit of a passion for me... im a sophomore in high school and i play second part in this... but the thing is im one out of like 3 or 4 people out of the entire section that can actually tongue the eighth notes correctly =.= lol anyways yea trumpet is beast :)

  • @7trueamerican I'm gonna be a first trumpet next year, this year we had 6 trumpets: 1 senior, and 5 freshmen.... so we have 2 1st's, 2 2nd's, and 2 3rd's. Playing the trumpet is a passion of mine too... Our sheet music for this is a bit tweaked... but yeah, I can play the eighth-sixteenth notes too. I'm really good at the trumpet, but I really wish I chose a low brass instrument... =/.... Hey, how big is your school's band? Our marching band has 20 horns, 7 percussion...

  • @B1gB0ss45 same here... hopefully. i wanna be first :D my band is actually quite large compared to urs from what you told me o.o we have like 20 percussionists... 13 trumpets, 3 seniors, 3 juniors, 3 sophomores, and 4 freshman lol.... 2 french horns o.o, like about 15 flutes and 15 clarinets, 4 tubas, etc.... this is not counting the eighth graders that march with us though... o.o thats how small our own band is... we have 8th graders and 8th graders ONLY march with us high schoolers.

  • @7trueamerican 2 flutes, 1 clarinet, 3 saxophones, 2 tubas, 2 mallowphones, 1 baritone, 2 trombones, 6 trumpets, 7 percussion....

  • @B1gB0ss45 o.o geez.... thats a tiny band... what state do you live in?

  • This B side is Guitarists Norman Harris and Bobby Eli, bassist Ronnie Baker, and drummer Earl Young who went on to fom part of MFSB.....what a tune!

  • This one takes me back to high school in the 70's. Our band played this at the football games. Easley High School. 4A Champions. Green Waves rock. Thanks for posting this song. One of the greatest instrumentals ever.

  • You're welcome, Dancer3Thunder-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^_^)b

  • Great funky instrumental from the past! Many kudos to channel five in Cleveland, OH. The Big Five Show and Upbeat were a rave up. Thank you, Don Webster!

  • Our High School band use to play this at all The Football games.....it would fire us up!

  • The oldies station in town is all prerecorded and they never back announce. Thank you for posting this. This is like when I finally found the name for "Classical Gas"

  • You're welcome, Domophobia-san!!

    Otaku3 d(^_^)b

  • OMG I CAN'T BELEIVE THIS I REMEBER THIS FROM YEARS AGO THE HORSE EVEN HAD A DANCE TO GO WITH IT LOL I LOVE YOU TUBE.....

  • we're playing this in band :)

  • The Horse---I remember dancing to this at Club 22 in Cadiz, Ohio with Karen, and all our "Guy Friends". Spring 1968--magical, mystical, and definitely amorous!!!!!

  • It took me like seven years to find this song! Do you know how hard it is to find a song when you can't sing the lyrics to anybody for help? Damn! Job well done! I'll always have this mp3 now.

  • DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE OLD MUSIC VIDEO SHOW THAT WAS CALLED '' NOW EXPLOSION ''? THIS SONG WAS ON THERE ALL THE TIME.

  • Flash-back !! 1968 MEMORIES THAT ARE FOREVER / EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT "YOUNGER GENERATION" / WE PEOPLE WHO GREW UP IN THE 1960's & 1970's are "A MUSICALLY BLESSED GENERATION"

we have so many "SPECIAL MEMORIES"

  • Daddys' favorite !!!!we used to laugh at him singing it , up to this day he still bets on horses......

  • now this is a record i would like in my collection

  • MJHatersDieInHell1,

Because your comment had nothing to do with this song, I deleted it.

    60otaku3

    Otaku3 d(^_^)b

  • You have no idea how long I've been trying to find out the name of this song and who does it!!! A friend of mine at work told me today it was called "Get It On". Phhhfff! Bless your heart! Thank you so much! I LOVE this song! :)

  • You're very welcome, Russelltopia-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^_^)/

  • @Russelltopia This is actually the instrumental version of the original song, titled "Love is All Right." "The Horse was the flip side to the A-side of "Love is All Right," and became one of those records where the B-side is the hit, and not the A-side. Also of note, Cliff Nobles does not appear on this song, as he was the singer!

  • @charliemac64 Wow! I had no idea! :) Well, now every time I hear this song at work, I smile, knowing I finally found it and thanks to you, know the name and the back story to it. Thank you once again for everything. Love it!

  • @Russelltopia I'm the trivia master. :P

Our high school marching band used to play this all the time, and although I was not a member of the band, the song was definitely one of the highlights played by the band back in "the day" (late 70's for me). I am preparing to attend my HS's 50th anniversary (my 30th reunion), and much discussion about this song on that group's board led me to investigate the history of this song. There ya go. :)

  • @charliemac64 Well, I really appreciate the work you put into finding more about it. Every time I hear it now, the next words out of my mouth are,"The Horse!". LOL! It's just such a catchy song and easy to hum to. I even have my own harmonies and notes I add to it when I sing/hum it. LOL!

  • @charliemac64 The story goes that Cliff got so drunk before the recording session that he never made it to the studio that day. The studio musicians recorded this anyway, putting Cliff Nobles' name on it and becoming a huge hit for him!

  • I remember this from years back

Could do with some vocals to spice it up

  • @rowley1950 They do it is called "Love is alright"

  • @rowley1950 Jesse James - Love Is Alright

  • does anyone know who played the drums on this song. cant play but LOVE THEM

  • @oldermusiclover I believe it was Tommy Soul on drums.

  • This was adopted soon after by my high school as our secondary fight song.

  • ...and this jam got me through the cold winters in Mannheim, Germany. Just horse'in around,

  • This jam got me going when i was preparing to practice (Football) while stationed at RAF Weathersfield, Braintree/Essex, UK (1966 to 1969)...

  • Cliff Nobles" the horse" and Hugh Maskela " grazing in the grass" were the 2 best instrumental songs of the 60's.

  • Comment removed

  • reminds me of Nam and R & R in Bancock 1968

  • Thanks for posting - always loved this by Dexys, great to hear the original.

  • @kakarrot62 I LOVED Don Cannon! Yay Philly...

  • @kakarrot62 . Ah Wibbage or WFIL on the car radio on the way to the Shore. I too can remember it like it was yesterday but it's been 40 + years.

  • Pep squad and jr high and high school football games. what memories.

  • this is my old high schools fight song believe it or not...... Peabody "Warhorses"

  • my highschool band playd this today n my friend steven played the drum solo n he broke his drum stick, it was sick. n out band teacher said we played this good for our first time playin it. (: good song

  • Now this is what you party to!! All these sorry young "so called" pop music kids out nowadays are just wannabees, no idea as to what real music is. This is how we used to party back in the 60's and 70's. Not a curse word mentioned, no guns or killing. Just good, clean fun and a whole lot of moving. It's sad that today's genre of music has gone straight to hell!!!!

  • My high school band played this song for years, usually in the fourth quarter of a game as the seconds ticked away. It is a powerful tune that triggers memories of crisp, cold Friday nights, beautiful girls, and young men's dreams.

  • @luvupokes Great imagery... and now, your story has a soundtrack...

  • Thanks for your reply pooka5472. That's interesting, because I am an entertainment reporter in Philadelphia, and back in June of this year, I interviewed Thom Bell and Weldon McDougal who were both present at the session when "The Horse" was recorded. Both of them told me that Earl Young was the drummer, and I recorded their statements. Were you there?

  • i can't figure out how this became such a staple for high school and college marching bands at football games.

  • Playing this for Avon Park High School.

  • Always loved this tune.

  • The drummer who played that ridiculous solo is the legendary Earl Young, who also played on countless hits by the Delfonics, the Stylistics, the Spinners, Main Ingredient, B.B. King and even the Village People. He's also the drummer on gold and platinum Gamble & Huff hits including "For the Love of Money," "LoveTrain," "Bad Luck" and "The Love I Lost." Earl has two Grammys and is the founding member of The Trammps ("Disco Inferno"). Check out his video, "Earl Young's Drum Lessons..."

  • @Tweeter115 Actually, the only members of MFSB to perform on this song were the horn players. The rhythm section was comprised of guitarist Bobby Tucker, bassist Benny Williams, and drummer Tommy Soul.

  • I learned this as a teenage in my first band. Sounds really fast now but back then it was bumping.

  • ahhh soul music :)

  • wow i was looking for this song for the longest time, i heard it first on a taping of "late night with Conan O'brien(2007) then when daniel radcliffe came out for an interview and they played this song for "equus" i got the connection later on "horse" lol sorry but the max weinberg 7 band played it really well, i liked that version compared to the original, again apologies, its good either ways...

  • I remember dancing to this in high school..Milby High in Houston TX around 1968.

  • To thesahidayat85-san,

I blocked your account after having deleted it promptly because you posted the comment totally irrelevant to this song.

    60otaku3

  • There are lyrics to this song. It was written by Jesse James and he did eventually lay vocals down for it but as the story I always heard was Jesse didn't make the session for whatever reason and the backing musicians who later became known as MFSB in the 70's recorded the track as an instrumental and intended it to just be the "B" side of course as we know rock & roll history it became the "A" side. You can hear Jesse's version on YouTube. Odd to hear it after all these years as an instrumental

  • Thank you for detailed data on this song, radioman66-san!!

    Otaku3 (^_^)/

  • Now this was the beat that every High school band in the south jams to during night time football games and its call the battle of the bands.

  • I play this in pep band! XD

  • i belive robert n ethel kennedy won a dance contest just the day or days before ethel kennedy gave bith to of last baby amazing how them two could dance awesome GO!! KENNEDYES!!!

  • Robert and Ethel Kenney may very well have won a dance contest to this tune. However, Robert Kennedy was killed about a MONTH before Ethel Kennedy gave birth to their last child. Interesting bit of information, though.

  • Superb!

  • @ 0:50 when the sax hits that bass low and riciprocates with the trumpets is just heavenly genius.
