@Playitalready Lots of marching but strategy plays a big part. You can make a good move near the beginning. Line the troops up next to each other before you reach the farmyard. You can destroy a lot of the enemy in the early stages.

I've always said this game is the successor to Sid Meier's Civil War games. And the Community Mod Pack pretty much shores up this game. (it even has vocal orders taken from Sid Meier's CW)
Look's like Sid'[ Meyer's on steriods. Don't hear order's being called out..like March, Double line. There have been several failed 3d civil war game...I so hope this isn't one of them as I have longed to get back on the field.

You got me there. But I think you have an idea of what I meant comparing the Soldiers footsteps to an Ants. If you don't, then you might've not seen many cartoons or kids movies with the "supposed" sounds of an Ants footsteps. I like the game, I don't have it "yet," but I plan on getting it in the next few days. Long live the Union!

As far as I know ants don't make a sound audible to the human ear. Therefore they make perfect soldiers. An ant can carry more popcorn than any human as well. Check out Ant Attack on the ZX Spectrum for proof.
I don't know if you can speed things up as I havn't explored every aspect of the game as it is quite involved. This video is from a saved state after playing for about 3 weeks. the early stages of the game don't involve so much tavelling before you come into conflict.
