Grant owned slaves and had to be forced to give them up, The CSA constitution outlawed the slave trade. Read actual documents before you come to such an arbitrary conclusion. That is an excellent point you made about Lincoln's legacy of centralization in the context of Iraq. Under a Jefferson/Jackson state sovereignty model, we would encourage the voluntary nature of a union. Under a Hamilton/Clay/Lincoln model, we fight against decentralization and steer states or factions toward an involuntary union. So long as people crave power, "Hamilton/Clay/Lincoln" will be the default position. Only the liberty-minded can interupt that position. How often? For how long?

Without getting into some of the details of Lincoln's abuses of power here, or debating whether Southern secession was legitimate, our insistence on keeping Iraq "whole" is not exactly Lincoln's legacy. The motives in each case (Lincoln v. Bush) are somewhat different. But interesting thesis and good presentation.
