Honestly, these are not strict values. It's against the Catholic religion to live with someone before marriage. I personally abide by this rule even though not many people follow it anymore.
One thing I do find interesting in this cultural, whether you agree or disagree with their way of life, is how they have kept their traditions up for so long and not a lot of people can say that.
I know that I have no right to judge their culture, because I'm sure my southern culture would most likely be odd to them, but they say they are very religious and no one wants to go to the church for the wedding? They would rather show up for the reception? Doesn't make any sense to say that.

When your live is cut that short, you must grow up young, love and have children while you are around to raise them. I see nothing wrong with their culture. I'm on the fence when it comes to criticism of others cultures. They are like orthodox Jews or traditional Catholics, when it comes to woman's restricted role and trading horses. These aren't traveler cultural aspects, these are ancient cultural aspects. I'm really having trouble accepting those traditions as distinct traveler culture. And its much more distinct than the Amish who take noncomformity and traditional values to the max.

Something else I wonder about is how they manage to keep everybody fed without running out of food. That's more or less the reason why people bother with lists and invitations; they don't want to run out of food. Has a Gypsy wedding ever run out before? Was it really awkward?
I have to wonder if the reason why some of the non-predjudice places won't take Traveler weddings is that they don't know how many people will be there. By law, they can't have more than a certain amount of people to a certain size room and I can imagine a place getting over capacity quickly with a big open wedding. It doesn't apply to this reception since it seems to be partially outside but it might be an issue for some of the totally indoor ones.

My family is descended from the Romani gypsies on my mother's side. We're several generations out, & we immigrated to the States so long ago that very little of the culture is still within my family, but you can see shreds of it. i dont know how they can say that every gypsy girl is not allowed to do anything and the only thing they dream of is their wedding...I know allot gypys in Germany and they are more allowed to do than the UK girl could ever imagen and they are not getting married with 16 this was maybe so usual in the Middle Ages but not in the 21th centery...

Im sorry but I feel no young woman is ready for marriage at the age of 16. I mean really you're just like starting puberty! What makes anyone think they are ready for a husband and children? I feel they wed so young to not go against their religion by having sex out of wedlock, my opinion. Thats one part of the culture I dont think I will understand.

How is that a bad thing? They have amazingly strong morals that they all share! We have totally different morals inside the same family and they can, lets be honest, changed often. As to the living with a boyfriend before marriage, if it works for them then why should they change? Personaly I don't understand why that happens in the first place. The girls have a healthy body image! Why is that such a bad thing? It isn't!

I agree that they are rather judgementle of the "outside" but then again why shouldn't they be. We do the exact same and most likely worse to them and that is not fair but they deal with our behavior 1,000 times better then, I'm sure, we do with them. They are the better people here and we have to see that. No sex before marriage ever, even the teen boy's agree thats amazing no divorced and broken home, no threat of being alone in life, no drugs!

They are allowed to have their own culture. Your idea of what's appropriate is obviously different than theirs, but you still have to respect their culture and how much they honor and respect their cultures and traditions. the lack of respect being shown towards their culture is a good example of the ignorance and close mindedness of today's world.

honestly it seems as if they're making these girls live the lifestyle of a prostitute or slut with out letting them have any enjoyment out of it. I don't understand why people care so much about what they wear. Sure I wouldn't let my daughter wear those clothes but we don't live in the same community that they do.
