@jezmuff The surfer was disoriented from being tumbled underwater for a minute straight. I've been in that situation for 10 foot surf. the surf in the movie is at least 40 feet...

@ShadowSly72 current of huge waves are powerful, you may be able to see someone through the water, but you may not be able to reach them...

plus this is a movie and one of the guys was holding a rock... kind of defeats the purpose of trying to rise... however, in big surf like that surfers are trained (as a last resort) that if they can, grad a rock to keep themselves in one place and allow the swells to pass, than go for air... quickly... lol.
