  • Can someone please explain the ending of this movie to me?? Because I didn't get it at all.

  • Moon is so much better than this movie, and I'm not just talking about the effects. If you haven't seen Moon, watch it now.

  • @PezMan007 I have seen moon and I love it but 2001 is my favorite film.

  • @PezMan007 You clearly don't know too much about cinema.

  • People need to realize movie trailers were a HELL of a lot different back then than they are today. Our A.D.D. addled world can't handle more than 30 seconds of anything and even then it has to have explosions or bouncing breasts in it.

2001 is a fantastic film. The trailer does it no justice. It's one of the greatest films ever made. Realize this was made in 1968 and be in awe.

  • Made in 2001? this movie looks like it was made in the early 1990's... maybe sooner..

  • @Mephistin it was made in 1968 lol

  • @TOPICCRO007 Title says 2001, is this mistake so unbelievable to make? really? LOL

  • @Mephistin thats the name of the movie. "2001: A space Odyssey"

  • @Mephistin are you retarded its set in the future in 2001 the movie was made in like the 70's

  • @Mephistin It was made in 1968 thats just the title

  • watevr.... wers the dazzling part?

  • One of the few movies that stay true to science. Sound can not travel in space. If you see a space scene where you hear "boom boom bang" well that's very unrealistic.

  • one of the best films ever..... it's a completely different movie...not much talking, and because of that it makes you think and use your brain to understand the movie, also a slow movie and quiet and beautifful visual effects that makes you really feel that you are in space. people who think space films should its all about boom boom and explosions are retards.... space is all about patience....

  • @TigzaMigzatesPT The last 15 min of the film made me think WTF am I watching????

  • same here

  • Just finished watching this film, I had herd so many good things about it but had never got round to seeing it. As a fan of Kubrick i'm sad to say that this was a bad film. Yes the effects are fantastic and many shot's blew me away but it was just so slow. The pacing is so bad, we cut to a spaceship that looks amazing and then we cut to a different angle and again and again. HAL could have been a real menacing villain but he was under developed and went from good to bad in a matter of minuets

  • @dazzer89 i 100% agree, just watched it today turned it off, even watching the trailer im ready to fast forward holy shit

  • @drewdonham you've just missed one of the best movies ever made

  • Visually stunning and beyond it's time in special effects. That being said, other than Hal, it was the most boring film I have ever watched. Let's just say that I fast forwarded through a few scenes. I get what is good about this film but I likely won't be watching it again in the future. Just not for me.

  • Culture brought me here

  • I finished watching this movie thinking "what the fuck just happened?" But I did know that I just finished watching a spectacular film. Definitely going to watch it again soon.

  • 0:07 An adventure began... *fap fap fap*

  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker brought me here.

  • God, it's full of stars!

  • is it just me, or 9000 sounds just like KITT?

  • is it just me, or 9000 sounds just like KITT?

  • You guys have no idea what this movie is about til you watch it on lsd. Holy motherfuck.

  • @hearthelionroar LMMFAOOOOOOOOOOO

  • @hearthelionroar LMMFAOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Alot of people are getting annoyed at my comment... All the more reason for me to keep it there!

  • I want to be a space traveler, and NOT have a computer that has a mind of it's own >_>

  • @TheDeerFolk Why not? That would be KEWL :D

  • @danerogil and have the possibly of it taking over and me dying a brutal death T_T :(

  • @TheDeerFolk I would be cool with it if it's name was GLaDOS :D

  • I used to hate this movie.....but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • this movie was so before it's time, amazing film.

  • I didn't really understand the film when I watched it the first time, but having read some explanations and interpretations, I find it really interesting. I'm definitely going to read the book at some point..

  • I understand the whole "everyone's opinion is equally important" but if you believe this film is pretentious shit or boring, than you are of a lesser level of intellectual capability than I. regards, someone better than you.

  • These kinds of slow-paced movies really has it's charm. I thought i understood the events that were happening but the end left me stunned. Hard to interpret but it was very well-made.

    Nevertheless, what a movie-experience.

  • I don't find this film very amusing. It is as I call it outdated. Seriously, we were so optimistic of what our future would be and 2001 has passed and so has 2010. There should be a remake like 2050: The year that will never happen due to the end of the world.

  • @toxboxic Your Retarded!

  • @OroborosFMA

    well said

  • half a billion miles into space? not very far at all, cosmically.

  • Can people stop calling this intellectual and calling people who don't like it stupid. This isn't some mind boggling movie it's just a vague art mood piece that calls upon the viewer's own interpretation.

  • Comparing this movie to Blade runner is just dumb. The are like two sides of the same coin. 2001 is, in the end, one of the most positive movies around. Blade Runner is, when you consider the Director's Cut, just about from beginning to end one of the most pessimistic moves around. We have the perfect reason of the monolith on the one hand, and the dreary cynical production of human-copy slaves on the other.

  • @OroborusFMA Don't agree. Considering this film is Nietzschean in any possible way, we have the "perfect reason" of HAL. The monolith is, frankly, a mystery, but we can't deny the theme of the film being the overcoming of or struggle of man against apollonian "reason". The ending is something purely irrational and mystical, an overman beyond instrumental reason (HAL) is created. This film is like Heart of Darkness in space.

  • most boring movie ever made.

  • @themenaceanish you don't knwo ANYTHING about films, your favourite film is Twilight so your opinion is worthless. Oh and all that bullshit you spewed about Afghanstan makes absolutely no sense, you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Your own government planned 9/11 that's how much they care about you. Saudi Arabia controls your countries government, you have to ask them before you invade a country. USA = poodle of Saudi Arabia LOLZ LULZ

  • @themenaceanish Merry Christmas troll .

    LOLZ LULZ

  • Kubrick was a stupid movie director. 2001 don't have any sense. Other like Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon are crap movies too. Hitchcock was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Kubrick.

  • Ready the book, then you will understand.

  • Bring back Bladerunner - come on remake it - i wanna see

  • Blade Runner is better, this movie is boring pretentious shit.

  • @themenaceanish i feel that about blade runner honestly but still i havent watched more then a few minutes of 2001 a space odyssey and blade runner the first hour (still i cant believe i could stand that much)

  • @themenaceanish it's just more difficult to watch, that doesn't make it shit. I don't believe a film considered among the top 10 of all time is shit.

  • Thats siri XD

  • i like Kubrick's films...is this one another great work?

    Thanks

  • @charms71 His greatest, arguably.

  • I can't find any hard facts around the web about the way this film was actually shot. I tried google and all that. Were space ships and space stations we see in "space" hand built miniature models, or were they computer generated images? (EH, IN 1960's?Computer generated? No chances?) P.S One day I want to have a dining room which is a copy of the room where East meets West - your man meets our Soviet crew and they have a conversation. And a bedroom from "Solaris"(1972) by Andrei Tarkovsky.

  • One of the best, if not the only one very best film to ever be released. The trailer is amazing and it shares the most amazing scenes with the audience. It's surprising how "2001: A Space Odyssey" is one of the most popular and recognised motion picture ever, yet it is a pioneer of films with long takes and SYMBOLISM! (Long takes and symbolism are described to be "non popular" features nowadays. LONG TAKES! AND SYMBOLISM! THOSE TWO THINGS MUST BE LOVED AND APPRECIATED BY EVERYONE!THE RIGHT WAY!

  • Dr. Michio Kaku bring me here... not some some stupid ass youtuber...

  • @nipols Send mee a link.Please. with michio kaku!

  • If you finished the movie thinking, "What the fuck just happened? I don't even..."

Then I suggest you try not to hate the movie for making you use your brain. Give it a while to sink in, then appreciate it for what it truly is.

  • @danerogil The movie is a pretentious piece of shit.

  • @jawehawk Alright man, to each his own.

  • @danerogil I watched part of the movie and thought it was slightly humorous but still incredibly stupid, so I fast forwarded through the rest. If this movie makes you use your brain, more than you usually use your brain, you would have to be incredibly stupid because the movie puts you into a brainless stupor.

  • @TheOldBeef

don't hate the movie just because you fail to understand it's genius...

  • @kenijaru I don't hate the movie, I merely think the movie is stupid. You fail to understand how the movie is a pretentious, slightly humorous pile of dog poo. It's "genius" is nothing but smoke.

  • @TheOldBeef So your saying you don't like the movie because it's stupid... how? How is it stupid?

  • @danerogil 'Tis stupid because it is boring and is not intellectually or emotionally stimulating (most of the time).

  • @TheOldBeef I agree, but the times it WAS emotinally stimulating were ground breaking moments, iconic even. You have to agree. I personally had a boner when that ape man discovered how to use a hammer :D

  • @TheOldBeef I think it's "boring", because todays youngsters are used to MTV and the like. It must always "happen" something in a fast pace. People should try to relax and enjoy the stunning visuals of Kubrick. When "2001" was made, no one had walked on Moon, no one had actually seen people floating in weightlessness.

Read the novel by Arthur C Clarke. I can highly recommende it. It explains (almost) everything that happens.

  • @TheOldBeef Sorry sir, but you can say the movie is stupid. By the way you write and judge, i can DO tell you are stupid. Don't pretend you can understand a movie like this if the only think you watch are 3D Hollywood films with a lot of explosions and nothing of plot and profund meaning.

  • @Pepotas125 If my writing is shit, than yours is diarrhea. You "can DO" tell that I am stupid, and you say I can't understand a movie like this if the only "think" I watch is 3D Hollywood films with no "profund" meaning. Furthermore, your first statement is just an obvious fact with no punch- you might as well say everybody poops. The truth is, all the profundity in this movie could have been expounded in about 20-30 min or so, rather than 2.2 hrs, and the visuals are not amazing on a crappy TV.

  • @danerogil It doesn't have to do with necessarily not using your brain, hell I was thinking the exact same thing at the end, yet I find this movie is quite a worthwhile watch and would definitely recommend it to anybody. Although I did end up reading the books afterwards which explained A LOT more.

  • @SamuraiZach0 I never read the books, so I still have no idea what happened at the climax...

  • @danerogil That's the whole point.

  • @danerogil Ide just like to express how annoyed i am at you. You ruined this movie for me. Everyone finished this movie thinking that way dont even try and pretend that you weren't mildly shifted by what you saw at the end. It fucking annoys me when hipster dickwads like yourself come in and pretend that the rest of the world is idiotic and held back by "todays terrible media". Dont even pretend you are somehow excluded from the feeling that everyone else felt at the end. Movie ruined

  • @danerogil also this "then appreciate it for what it truly is." Its not like anyone wouldnt appreciate it for what it truly is. It is a masterpiece, it is one of cinemas greats, i dont need some asshole sitting on youtube trying to like high and mighty to point that out.

I get it there are some idiots out there, point made.

Piss off hipster, your no better than anyone else.

  • The ending is nearly impossible to interpret.

    Incredible film nonetheless.

  • @TheMamboro you got a point my friend. but i will never defend those movies, i despise 21 century cinema except a select few, like training fay, blow, dark night....and some others. I dont like "meanigless movies", i really hate todays horror, and all movies today are dumb ass comedy and retarded horror movies....i cant wait to see what Kubrick says about movies in the 21 century...(when i meet him in Heaven, if i go there)

  • what piece of music is it at 2:09?

  • This Film have more technology than Argentina in 2011!!!

  • They should have used the theme music and made a kind of short resumé of the movie without ruining the most important parts, and cut this stupid narrator out. An alternative movie needs an alternative trailer.

  • I have the outmost respect for Kubrick and his works, but this movie is the most overrated movie of all time IMO. Pretentious, boring and just plain bad. It's got some beautiful setpiece moments, but this is not a good movie!

  • @Oxpost I think people either love or hate this one.

  • @BearWindAppleyard Yeah, I haven't heard a single person say "it's okl". :P

  • MRSSSSS !!! i ti i odiseja !!!

  • WORST DIRECTOR OF ALL TIME!

  • This movie was the weirdest shit ever!!!!!!!!

  • My Real Life Name Is Hal :3

  • I'm a Christian and I love this film.

  • this is film for atheist full of shit!

  • @holicat098

God, you are stupid. Go watch your shit taste movies you religious piece of garbage.

  • what the hell is this movie about??? haha I don't understand from the trailer haha

  • Thumbs up if you have this video!

  • Isn't the next iPhone getting a Assistant AI built right into it in a couple days? It begins...

  • This can't be 2001!

  • @BrickFlipMan your telling me! I wish that we had this in 2001!

  • @BrickFlipMan i dont know if you re being serious but do you know when the movie was produced ?

  • @theseventhson95 70-90?

  • @BrickFlipMan

It is produced in 1968 ;)

  • i hated the ending of that movie

  • @1800FruityTangerine The end is the best part. D:

  • @wittsmith

It was cool, least boring, but it was meaning-less, it didn't explain much really. I looked up and figured it out vaguely, but to just a guy watching it with no prior imformation, it's confusing.

  • Kubrick geniusss!!

  • What's the music @ 2:12

  • @TheSimmonsFilmCo Richard Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra. Classic.

  • thumbs if you came here from seein 'Sal' in recess....and wanted too see what it was based on! lol

  • dammit, im fuckin 20 years old and just got the red circle robot 9000 reference ....seen it in "Recces" when they replaced the school clock, and "The Simpsons" tree house horror 21023684263988000.2

  • In 1969 it seemed like we would have a permanent presence on the moon by 2001. Now it seems like it may never happen.

  • @jimjones2012 Nonsense, the landscapes looked nothing alike. The moon landing absolutely happened, and you have no evidence at all to prove otherwise.

  • Copyright 2003 Warner Bros. huh?

  • "... startling experiences..."

yes, i suppose unexpected death would definitely be considered startling

  • Yeah that was 2001

  • Who cares about the trailer, What made the movie so cool was that this was stanley kubrick's interpretation of what space would be like. This movie was made before man actually entered space. Very cool indeed.

  • @jimjones2012 ugh. really.

  • @jimjones2012 Go fuck yourself.

  • Read 'Alchemical Kubrick 2001: The Great Work On Film' by Jay Weidner

  • What is the name of that epic soundtrack.

  • *Film meaning actual film it was recorded on.

  • It is worth remembering that this film used technology that would not be seen again until StarWars and a little later then that for the type of film in the movie-making industry. That's over 20(?) years more advanced than other movies if it's time.

  • Saw a south park version of the I can't let you do that dave thing, luls!!

  • 2001 isnt the greatest film of all time? That can only be attributable to human error, Dave.

  • @jimjones2012 Think about this. The terrorist attacks took place on Sept 11th. Sept is the ninth month of the year. Nine is two less than eleven and two less than nine would be seven. The number eleven rhymes with the number seven and the number two rhymes with the word Jew. Could it be that Al Quida is PART OF A JEWISH CONSPIRACY? You decide.

  • @Mandragara lol

  • 1:10 is that IPAD? :D the father of ipad maybe..

  • this movie can be sued by apple. cuz there is a scene with tablet pc.

  • so this is how 2001 was suppose to be like ?

  • Kubrick is god, hands down!

  • mind=fucked

  • Such a classic film...

  • I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't let you do that.

  • LOL WTF

  • If I were an astronaut I would take LSD(or shrooms or DMT) In space and stare at every star and all the natural colors of galaxies.

  • @hOmboY562R I'm pretty sure it would be good enough WITHOUT reality altering drugs, reality is cool enough as it is!

  • @Mandragara your right =) lol

  • @hOmboY562R A bad trip in the confines of a spaceship would probably suck.

  • the music....also AMAZING.

  • If you understand this movie. Stanley Kubrick has failed

  • @LocustxXxLocust If you read Clarke's book, it makes a LOT more sense. They left a lot of the book on the editing floor - making the final sequences open to interpretation. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

  • @myrtlebox Yea exactly I think Kubricks goal was to keep the mystery!

  • @myrtlebox Ironically the movie is not based upon Clarke's book. Although 2001 A Space Odyssey is based upon the short story "The Sentinel" of Arthur C. Clarke this short story is not the same as the story of the book or movie. Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke simultaneously wrote the story for movie and book so it turns out that book and movie are rather two different interpretations of the same theme.

  • @MrCalhoun Yeah, I know it was a collaborative effort. Clarke was not happy about being beaten to the finish either. He felt (correctly) that the book would become a 'tribute' to the movie - which it certainly wasn't.

  • @myrtlebox While Stanley Kubrick pays more attention a philosophical and a mystic theme, Arthur C. Clarke rather concentrates upon the scifi aspects of 2001 which also doesn't mind him of demystifying some of the themes which Stanley Kubrick left unexplained to the point in which he gives an explanation for the story of 2001 in three continuations named 2010, 2061 and 3001.

  • this movie is just amazing good shit right there man

  • Two other great movies in the same vein (epic, yet introspective) are End of Evangelion, and The Tree of Life

  • get the fuck out of here, avatar was a CGI overrated piece of garbage. you want a classic, 2001 space odyssey, clockwork orange, GoodFellas, The shining, Die hard, The warriors, Scarface, The king of Comedy, Pulp Fiction, Cape Fear (1991), not fucking Avatar, or the notebook, or the fucking hangover, please people watch some real cinema

  • @tylerf13ful Die Hard...? Seriously? I'm sorry, if you are going to talk about the foolish attempt at cinema of Avatar, then you shouldn't dare say watch Die Hard instead! Avatar has it's place in cinema, regardless of what people like you say.

  • @hotsizzleakadafizz dude, Die Hard is one of the best films ever made, you have shit taste. Avatar was sooooo overate, it bullshit.

  • @tylerf13ful How can you even consider Die Hard to be in the same vein as 2001 or even the same artery or fucking organ system!?

  • @tylerf13ful

i agree, except what you say about Avatar. What was portrayed in that movie was pretty unique. just saying, i don't want to argue

  • @MrFTW733 ohh, yeah. i agree too. very unique concept. but its so overrated

  • @tylerf13ful Thank you!! I was waiting for someone to say that!

  • @tylerf13ful You are simply misundertanding things here. Avatar wanst ment to be a science movie. I think what u need to watch first and understand is the difference between a science movie and a entertainment movie. you are simply going EGO on something which is totally unrelated.

  • cracks me up, this was in 1968 and they pictured this to be 2001, they forgot the two towers that got destroyed and the war in iraq, ohh if they only knew at that time

  • GENIOUS,,, if u didnt get it search Space Odyssey meaning of monolith revealed....

  • Whoever is thinking of watching this movie, please don't, spare your back and eyes, don't beleive anything anyone say how good this is, it's not, its a 3hr long movie about nothing, litelary nothing, you can delete 99% of the movie and you won't mix a single point of this movie, it haves none, it's a horrible abomination of a movie, kubrick wanted to change the way story is told in movies and thank god he didnt succed, he completely demolished everything about movies.

  • You idiots. You haven't even watched the movie and you say it sucks,it's gay, stupid and so on...Watch the movie and you'lle get brain-fucked.It poops on Avatar so hard that it wants to poop on Avatar even more. It's easily the best sci-fi movie of all time.OF ALL TIME.
