I'm a pianist so I don't know too much about violins, but I think she's done an excellent job conveying her ideas. And the finale... I've never been so scared listening to music lol
Wow. This just came on by itself after another clip I watched. I'm so glad this came on - - - I would have missed this. the first thing that struck me was the voice of
her violin. Excellent voice - - - - and then I noticed her great playing - - - i never
talk about incredibly bad recording quality. With the prominence of this competition, can't they hire better camera and mic people? Surely someone there should have listened to what they were recording, and what was actually being played, rofl. The fact that pizz can be heard over the soloist is kindof disturbing.
Simply Horrible. Has the standard gone down?? her Waxman was powerful.. but this is just awful!! mistakes after mistakes. 6:37 - 6:49 .... It felt like nails on the chalkboard.. The last note was like when my mom shrieked when she saw a mouse at the backyard!! Guys.. if you wanna listen to a great rendition of this concerto.. Listen to Akiko Suwanai (the 1990 winner).. it'son youtube.. fan-bloody-tastic.
Every virtuoso violinist do make mistakes, it's just the amount of mistakes he/she make. If he/she doesnt make any mistakes,he/she is neither a human nor normal person, he's a robot. If u ever ask a virtuoso violinist whether he has made a mistake ,he'll say' I did'..
She's blessed with a very rare gift. I'm 50 years old and have studied violin since 8 years old . Tanglewood, Meadowmount etc. She is profoundly musical and has a formidable bag of technique. I wouldn't dare to criticise her unless I dared to post myself playing against her. God bless her! As for the conductor and orchestra critics those who can DO and those who can't CRITICIZE. It's people with a low self esteem who go after excellent people.
It's partly the dire conducting. He just doesn't give a clear pulse exactly when it is needed. The orchestra also looks a bit cut down on string numbers, and the Sibelius needs a big sound, not in volume but in sonority. I agree there are some really loose moments rhythmically and that gives the soloist a nightmare, so she's doing really well considering.
how can a major competition have such CRAPPY orchestra is beyond me... especially towards the end, the orchestra was totally off-beat at 7:20! ridiculous... I feel bad for Mayuko Kamio.
i actually think her Tchaik is a little bit more convincing! her Sibeilius sound just a little bit unpolished (like the harmonics can be a little cleaner) But she is an amazing violinist! so young, too! Orhcestra is too loud at times!
I don't understand, why they gave her the 1st prize. Nothing outstanding. Good play, but nothing to compare with 1st winner of past years. They didn't give it to Jennifer Coh!!! Sh.t, it is absolutely injust :(
Finally, I have formerly been in the classical music field and know how tough it is. Please try to be more civil in these comments. I can sense the pressure that Kamio is under, to live up to those names I mentioned, because I was almost there at one time.
amazing is relative. They were better violinists at the competition but she won, why? her sound quality is poor, vibrato is not even and musicality is absolutly 100% fake, zero personal. The most she qualifies is for a good student.
NO, she IS very good. But there were three very, very good violinists who did not make the final. Anton Shishkov, Erik Schumann, and Nikki Chooi who are at the same level.
oh shut up. first of all the sound quality of the video is bad, not necessarily her. and the judges chose her, and im sure they know more than u.if she's a good student then u must not even be able to play.btw, how can her musicality be 100%fake? thats how she thought it should sound, and even if it isn't original musicality, that doesnt mean it's fake. do u know anything about technique or musicianship?
almost forgot, her interpretation doesnt have to be like, just make an impact and be memorable
There some coment here of jealousy person, I believe. I am from Brazil. It coul be there are another violinist that could play better but she is a goog musician .
Keep the yawn to yourself. You need to learn more about the art of violin before posting a stupid comment like this. And, you probably aren't even qualified to sit among the audience of the competition. There's a reason Mayuko Kamio beat all other contestants and won first prize. Can you deny it!? Very outstanding performance indeed for somebody so young, under such a stressful condition!
It was very stable, mature playings. To beat it with thouse youth energy playings you like, it have to be revolutionary. and hey, its Russia. its even harder.
Rumors are just rumors.
and remember, the audiences also have power to overturn the judge's decision even after the result was given. and it had happened before.
wait, the audiance can overturn the judges in the tchaik comp? idk about that b/c only the judges see most of the other rounds (which also count in the decision process, not just the final round). but idk. most competitions the judges are specifically supposed to try and not be influenced by the audiences reaction. if you're right, that is very interesting
even if one found little mistakes or nonpreferable things, this was still an amazing performance and definitely the best in the competition. She definitely had the most emotions inthe whole competition and was able to project that through her violin (and her face haha). with harmonics, it's a difficult section and even tho she mest them up she recovered very well and made a true performance out of this
Wonderful and passionate, but could probably benefit from being just slightly attenuated. Maybe 2.5 mg of Valium 1/2 hour prior to performance would make things just right. :)
It's nice that she took a short break while the orchestra played its little diddle in the end, because she appeared refreshed and therefore ended it quite nicely.
Overall, I think she did a fantastic job. There were some good and bad things, and more things she could've brought out, but I like this performer. The orchestra is really good, too.
I think it is just because everyone expected her to win. It was more an expect her to win environment, ie. Tchaik, than the she better really show us her panties and ALL THE GREAT SH*T she can do attitude of INdianapolis, where Yura Lee placed a surprising 4th. You take your pick -- plus, she's the prized student of Bron, winners of many competitions.
dont worry... if she isnt good enough then her career wont be too great or she'll end up playing the same pieces and people will get bored of her. no biggie if this competition was rigged. i thoguht she played the sibelius alright. some parts were so disgustingly boring though. -_- man... i wanted to jab her int he arse with a branding iron or somethign .. like.. PUT SOME FIRE GODDAMIT XD
People who used racism as an excuse for everything are losers. My findings are based on facts. For example, she was the ONLY competitor who did not stay at the same motel as the rest of the other competitors. Infact, rumors had it that she stayed at the same hotel as the jury members. Now wasn't that suspicious.
I got good reason to doubt her win. I was there at the competition. No doubt she played better in the finals but her semi-final performance was questionable. During her semi-final performance extra cameras were bought in to broadcast her performance and were turn-off once she finished. Real Strange.
I thought she played well enough in the semi's to get into the finals. She's an overall wonderful player...and from watching the other finalists, i think that kamio was one of the best. And I do think that Artyom Shishkov was robbed...he deserved to have been in the finals
Everybody who gets in the finals of Tchaikovsky are way above that level.. unless there are some unfair deals done.. In this case I think performance was good, but I haven't heard Borisoglebski's recording yet, so can't really say if i think she deserved 1st.
There was few flaws in intonation and in harmonics..

Learn your facts before making sweeping statements like these. Watch performance of Vivaldi by Kyung Wha Chung. Or Beethoven by Chao Liang Lin. They are what I call innovative! They are anything but cookie cutter.
I'm really sorry to offend you, maybe because of the past poor in artistic and cultural development, maybe only because of nature, asian musician are generations behind western culture in emotional and musical playing.
No reading is necessary, just listening is more than enough. It actually makes me very happy the fact that despite Asia and specially Japan investing so much money nowadays in classical musical, their musicians are still unable to be the best.
Well, I think that there ARE indeed some very terrific Japanese musicians. Ayako Uehara for example, and she studied with Vera Gornostaeva who taught many of the fabulous gifted Russian musicians today. It depends upon who. Kamio is just a very solid player, but not Suwanai, Oliveira, Tretyakov, Ilya Kaler, Mullova, or up to the calibre of those great previous winners.
Yeah, that does seem strange. But I think nowadays if you want top quality jury members you're going to have to pick from the top teachers of the world which inevitably means that some teachers will have their own students in the same competitions that they are judging. I think every competition nowadays has this problem. Maybe the problem is a bit magnified with the Tchaik since this is supposedly one of the more prestigious competitions.
Having teachers and their students participate in the same competition has been going on for decades. I'm sure that by now, competitions have been able to address that issue adequately and propose some mechanism for those teachers to become impartial.
But regardless, people like violinrachel still will put off her win as just a mere "her teacher was on the judge panel"...that disturbs me...because Kamio played extraordinarily well, and credit should be due to where credit is deserved.
And I agree, that the Tchaikovsky Competition has probably put in some sort of filter for this type of situation (or at least I hope so), but it still won't do any good for some people out there.
And it is also a shame that many people are going to dismiss Kamio's win because she was a student of Z. Bron. Regardless of this fact (and yes, I do agree that one should not be on a jury if his/her pupil is one of the participants in that competition), Kamio played extremely well.
