This is the way just plain great singing... man, woman, baritone, soprano, tenor... all should strive for this kind of ease of tone and expression. Such a fantastic artist!!!
Thank you for sharing this - it takes me back. We were there cheering on Bryn Terfel but when this chap came out he was such a stand out, one knew from the first bars (just like with Ms Mattila) there was no one close - I think he really took the lieder as well. Whatever one thinks of how he has developed this was an incredible voice & presence for a young singer.
@singerswithpresence could you tell more about the competition what you remember? do you really think he was much better than the other finalists? i am not surprised:) but would like to hear more from an eyewitness. you are so lucky. do you remember which lieder Dmitri sang in the competition? should he have won the lieder prize according to you:) ? how were the other finalists beside Dmitri and Bryn Terfel?
I've had the pleasure hearing Dmitri live on occasion in Boston and at the Met. His voice is that there is velvety warmth that is not picked up in recording. As for the size of the instrument, his voice is definitely on the smaller size for Verdi. Which means his voice lends itself to mid Verdi as opposed to early or late which is better for a larger, virile, and athletic instrument. I hear a sound from Dmitri that fills a concert effortlessly and is ample enough to reach standing room.
Lovely sound, plus absolute commitment to the music at hand.
Have read some accounts suggesting Hvorotovsky's voice is small and throaty, as well as others who maintain that this is a large, vibrant, powerful instrument -- not ENORMOUS, but big enough. I've never heard DH in person. So who the hell knows which critical assertion is correct, IF EITHER IS?
On records at least, DH sings with warnth, thrust and sheer tonal beauty --
Not the complete aria and it has more views than other greats singing it...interesting. Tonally it is well done, but at points he characteristically seems confused and his eyes are shifty.
My first teacher, the great baritone Benjamin Luxon, used to tell me ''never sing louder than beautiful!''. I have heard Dimitri all over the world, and it has always been loud enough, and stunningly beautiful.
@paddyswok , How lucky you were to have studied with Luxon. He's one of my favorite opera singers and had the most beautiful baritone voice ever. He certainly took his own advice, and never sang louder than beautiful." He was a great artist. Every note was exquisite.
@bassfanne45 I will pass on your compliment. I just spent a great night with him and his wife last week in Massachussets. He is now 73, and has been deaf since he was 54. But he is happy, as happy a man as I have ever met, in fact. A legend. We listened to his exquisite TV broadcast of Fahrendes Gesellen from back in the 70's with Haitink, then sang through the Songs of Travel the next morning. He played. I sang. My girlfriend recorded it. Treasured memories.
@paddyswok Hej, great, that you where able to study with Benjamin Luxon! I admired him very much! My teachers where Maria Stader, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Gundula Janowitz. You can here on my Videos what happened with this Student... :-)
Last time I heard him was in standing room at the Met, and his voice carried less well than the rest of the cast. That was two years ago -- was your experience more recent?
so the american houses are simply too big!!! - all the instruments became more loud and higher within the last century! only the human voice stayed natural, and the most beautiful voices are not the loudest ones! - I for myself prefer beauty before loudness!
I agree -- since when did 'loud' become the definition of 'good?' That is so high school. Beauty, tone, color and interpretation should be the focus of our singing, not honking notes over a bombastic orchestra. That just shreds the voice and our ears. And in large houses, the intimacy of music as a conversation between performer and audience is lost. It's always more fun to play a smaller venue.
@brunosilvershadow The Kennedy Center is like a @#%$ warehouse. Terrible venue, terrible sound. Saw Dmitri recently(ish) at the Met in Trovatore, and he was just fine.
@singerandsailor Interesting. I heard him sing Onegin at the Lyric in Chicago and he filled the space quite nicely. And i was even quite far back beneath the balcony.
The control in this performance is astonishing - I love Dmitri, but this was a revelation, he has become barkier over time, whereas this is purest silk...
This is absolutely stunning. I've been going on a bit of a 'Eri tu' binge, listening to Warren, Capuccilli, Bastianni, Nucci, Gobbi - all of them. I never thought i'd say this but i prefer a young Hvorostovsky's to all of them.
"but i prefer a young Hvorostovsky to all of them'
That's probably because you never heard any of them or him in the house. Recordings are VERY kind to his voice. Not that he doesn't have a beautiful voice, but I've heard him live. I've also heard Capp, L. Quilico, Nucci, MacNeil, Milnes, Zancanaro, Caroli, Mannaguerra and others sing this aria live. Dmitri is not close to them live in the opera house, where it counts. But for certain roles, he's fine. Just not Verdi.
leadoff: Mannaguerra was simply wonderful live. I heard him sing Rigoletto in the cavernous Lyric Opera of Chicago opera house and his voice carried effortlessly and the color is darker, fuller, and rounder live than on recordings. Like all good singers! The tenor that night was a fellow named Pavarotti. Jerome Hines was Sparafucile. A memorable night! The recording I've heard that most sounds like Man. in the house is his Nabucco recording.
he is not a verdi baritone, not quite. kavalierbariton is a better description... his upper register is not as athletic as, say, sherrill milnes' or titta ruffo's. That being said, I still prefer hvorostovsky's voice. second only to Gino Bechi, in my opinion. It's all a matter of preference, really, but bechi's timbre and charisma is just unmatched IMO.
Where is "Eri tu"? Anyways, Dmitri was a superior singer/artist/performer then, and he's even more so now. Forget Hampson. Forget Terfel. This is a real voice. Not a big voice? You've gotta be kidding me! He's Siberian for god's sake! Fantastic!
No one - noe else in the world knows how to spin a line like this man. As a singer, it's fascinating, and very frustrating since it's so difficult, to watch and listen!!

O dolcezze perdute! O memorie
D'un amplesso che l'essere india! . . .
Quando Amelia sì bella, sì candida
Sul mio seno brillava d'amor!
È finita, non siede che l'odio
E la morte nel vedovo cor!
O dolcezze perdute, o speranze d'amor!

An absolutely gorgeous instrument. I love all of his recordings. But in house, he doesn't have nearly as much power as the recordings show.
