The reason Chinese appear to more adept at math is because Chinese families (especially, immigrant or first generation families) emphasize math. This emphasize comes from the belief that math provides access to high end jobs (with engineering being a common focus). Also, math is understandable to immigrant parents who lack appreciation for other subject matter than requires a bit more assimilation (such as the humanities and social sciences).

@Doleafol they don't "appear" more adept at math, they ARE more adept at math.

And, it's because it requires rigor and effort.

It's pathetic, the excuses people make.

"Math just isn't my thing, I don't like math" NOBODY likes learning math, it's hard, but the payoff is worth it.

You don't build bridges or spaceships, by writing essays about your feelings.

And school systems today are terrified of having to make kids work.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. However, I would add that "build[ing] bridges or spaceships" are not the only worthwhile endeavors. A society of only engineers and scientists would be a dull place, indeed. Every society needs a "useless" element as well...its share of poets and artists. These people are those who "share their feelings." It's a necessary balance. Einstein and Walt Whitman riding a seesaw together...

I know this may be upsetting for some people to hear, but, being an engineer is HARDER, and not everyone can do it.

I know, I'm still in school at 25 and my friends who were humanities or art majors are all done now, and work in retail.

And, engineering IS art, how could you think otherwise???

Engineering isn't just mind-numbing number crunching, it requires imagination and creativity.

But then you're reasoning behind that claim is that it is because math takes rigor and effort (something you seem to think interchangeable with the word 'Chinese') Not only does this follow along a similar line of your opposition's point, but you're oblivious to it. And that there's no special trick to it.

Obviously, I was talking about people of Chinese culture, and making a generalization.
