@chambs123 Hi John! I'VE FOUND THE SOLUTION! This 61xx was always a poor runner, and I cleaned her up inside but she still ran badly; then I had an idea. I knew my oil conducted electricity so I put a big bit between the axles and the holders in the body (it picks up some power through the body) and she now runs fantastically! You have to be careful not to spill it anywhere else, but have a go with some of yours if you have conductive oil - worked for this one! =D
@REGWARNE12 Blimey I forgot to mention the weight! If you look at 8:06 then you'll see the size of the weight inside - serious stuff! Still fairly light compared to modern Bachmann stuff for example, but it doesn't really need much weight. Oh and yes, she probably looks good because I gave her a good clean and dusting before the review! =D
@theguy40267 Hi there! The gradient of that slope is actually 1-in-24, which is 1cm up for every 24cm along.... the other slope is 1-in-18 (maximum recommended for model trains) - the smaller the second number the steeper the gradient. You could do it in inches too i.e. 1 inch up for 24 inches along - message me if you need any help man! =D
@janiceandcliff Hi there Cliff! I was meaning to do Royal Lancer today but somehow felt I wanted to do the 61xx more - Royal Lancer is scheduled for next weekend, and I'll be taking the lid off her for the first time to show you the internal stuff and motor! =D
Nice review , excellant close up focus that puts more established model reviewers to shame , lovely rivet detail , revealed ,on this old Airfix 61xx. I think , 21st century steam models,although highly detailed , lack a bit of "character "sometimes ,nice job!
@SuperWHIZZO Thank you for your kind compliments! =D Always try my best eh! It's lovely detail, really good stuff, and as you say very characterful - as if it has a personality! I think having to do lots of maintenance makes it feel like that, which is nice. =)
@110samec Ah right, I saw one like that on eBay the other night - they do sound a bit odd I'll grant you! By the way, if you have any running troubles with it please don't hesitate to ask for help - I know quite a lot about these ones now! =)
@Rabbitbunvoo Thanks. It was my dads. He had it when he was about 12 and its been in my Granddads loft for about 20 years. If it does start getting problematic I'll just have it on display in the loco shed on the layout. I've also got the airfix B14, lima class 33 and some BR blue Golden arrow coaches as well as a load of old hornby wagons and a container crane.
@110samec Wow great stuff - family heirlooms and all that! I've got my Dad's old Tri-ang "Britannia" who is around 46 years old now but still goes strong! This 61xx came from my old neighbours brother who didn't want a load of these old trains any more - lucky for me! =D
Great Vid! Runs pretty well :) Always look good the GWR Prairies, large & small ones :) Not much has really changed when compared to the Hornby ones today, especially the chassis and wheels, although don`t have a traction tires, lol, like my Hornby Large Prairie, No. 5108 in GWR livery, despite been an early 70s Airfix, so similar when compared.
@BritishRailways60163 Thank you! They do look good I agree, and yeah they're very similar to the Hornby ones - yours must run beautifully! I'll take a look through your videos tomorrow, so expect some comments! =)

Hi Will, yet another great video & good to see you getting on pretty good with the video editing software!
I always found with Airfix loco;s that they are not so good on slow running but you do seem to have an exception to the rule there....top man!
Cheers, John.

@scotrail47 Thank you! Do you think the review was the right length - too long/too short? =) Just experimenting!

@Rabbitbunvoo I think it's a good length, I've always found 9/10 minutes about right

I have this but in BR black with the unicycling lion. Mine can run quite slow but it sounds like a cement mixer.
