Irbe was so underrated. I have a poster of him in in a 'Canes uniform. Too bad I can't find one with him in a Sharks uniform...those old ugly teal ones were great.

He was underrated because of his ugly hockey equipment. He took his job so rerious, that he preffered ugly but confortable pads and helmets rather than "cool" but unconfortable one. He's been repairing & inproving these pads untill they were complete rubish - true professional!

i dont think his equipment was uncomfortable. with theese old style helmets you can see mutch better. When his first pads was unuseable he send them to factory for dblicate. so he didnt always wear only one pads.

@Hiei2k7 - I know what you mean, I had an Irbe style mask, then my dad got me a goalie helmet for Christmas, I used it one game and told him I couldn't see as well so he told me not to use it then. I don't know how some of the goalies from the 70s and 80s could even see, some of their helmets only had a tiny eye hole.

I wouldn't say Detroit tore him apart, I'd say the Canes offense was the only thing that lost the Canes the Cup in 2002, no one could have done better than Irbe in that final. Can't win if the offense can't score.

the defense was shit, irbe stood on his head for three games, and when i say we tore him apart,,, 35-38 shots on goal every nite takes it out of ya, we wore him out, just like all season long, 32-45 shots on goal each game,,
