I understand the need and desire to protect the children but the stability of an ecosystem is far beyond the importance of every child on earth. I hope this wasn't a threatened or endangered species. I have made the proper authorities aware of this video and hopefully they will investigate. An easier, safer and less violent way of protecting the kids would been having them play elsewhere. If there are rattlers all over this area than that man needs to have his kids removed from his custody for allowing them to play in such a dangerous area without making sure it was safe first.
Rattlesnakes are harmless unless someone messes with them. They don't seek out people to bite. Snakes are afraid of humans. They prefer to avoid us. There is no need to go looking for them simply to kill them. That is barbaric no matter how you slice it. It is unethical and it is wrong.

I also happen to have a PhD in EEOB (evolution, ecology and organismal biology) and my dissertation was on the breeding population of midget faded rattlers in the San Rafael Swell. There have only been 5 deaths from rattlesnakes in Utah in the last 110 years. Rattlesnakes aren't dangerous.

In fact a 2007 study showed that the population of Crolatus adamanteus (eastern diamondback) has been declining sharply for the last decade or so due to habitat destruction, hunting and persecussion (from pricks like you). The rabbit boom in Florida is most likely due to this. The IUCN is considering placing it on the endangered species list. If that happens are you still going to kill them?
