I think she is pretty good, just little rusty voice sounding like effected by smoking, but she has a heart in it and hey I try singing this and it is hell of a work. I heard lots of excellent singers completely messing this song up. A from me too.
Wrecked with all the talking at the beginning as it is a very serious song usually. Voice was strained, needs some echo effect, though I loved the ending.
This tonality is the only video i have seen on Youtube where her voice is very close to the original.Having worked with laura and still working with laura she has happens to cover artist with very close to there voices. If you watch many other Great gig vids you notice the over kill of Reverb and delay. This is truly absent here. your hearing more of lauras voice in the mix.I think it could have used a bit more myself but for a live performance this was a nice job Laura.
no, this is bad...Don't like their stupid jokes and don't like the emotions going with the singing of her. O.K. it's not that bad but I have heard better performers.
Forget the idiots Laura, you ROCKED !!! This was following a stellar vocalist, and you did a hell of a job, wished I could have been there, and listened to it live, youtube recordings don't always allow the best replay. You should do some Janis Joplin tunes, you would be a Queen of the Mic!!!! >:)
Mad props, she did pretty well!! Talking in the beginning was a bit of a bother, but she did a good job with the singing. I'm surprised they managed to fit all of those instrument sinto one kitchen.
I have listened to the original of this song a thousand or more times and many interpreters, well done to this fine effort, at least stuck to the original score as opposed to the many copies out there, a good try!
Man if the sound man would have put any effects on her voice it would have helped tremendously. Sounds like she really got winded at the end of the first part.
Oh Brother, what a ruckus. Cover bands usually have to play it identical to the original or they are not hired. So they tried to do it, but it's just sloppy loose and amateurish. The SONG is spectacular, but the band is mediocre. When it's just the piano and the singer it's quite nice, tho.
@KingKook do not know what about u but i will never have chance to be on pink floyd concert, so if i will have chance to listen or this or some pop bands I will listen to this... I respect them for trying hardest song ever, and it is actualy not bad at all..
they would not have known during the recording (well, not necessarily) but if they had lowered the level of her mic 25% and put a a lot more large reverb on it: it would have come off much better. BTW, the slide guy needs to come in on cue (and learn how to slide) But overall, not bad ~
@SaintUdnitz i'd like to think of myself as one haha, yes and i bought a jg 4003 in 2008 brand new from american musical supply, i didn't want to wait over a year from a local shop
@SaintUdnitz I think that the point of having a conversation on stage is to take their own interpretation of the conversations you hear on the original song. There you have thoughts about death, the words spoken by these musicians here are trivial, but I think that's the way of showing how mortal and brief and trivial each human is, as we all live as if we did not know that at some point we will end.
It may be my interpretation, and I may be mistaken. If that's so, credits to me. Hehe.
i just watched an interview w/ torry. and from what she said on how it all came about, then she deserved the songwriting credit for that song. that song has to be shared with other singers when singing it live though. it's too much strain on the vocals.
That IS Laura Press. She is my wife. That was on 2/17/06. Cut from the start is her saying, "This is for you Ray." Our friend the late, great Ray Barretto died that day. That is why she is not totally dead on. She was fighting back tears. She usually does that song a lot better than this. BTW, the levity at the start is just a bunch of friends on stage playing for a bunch of friends in the audience at a friends bar. Remember is it supposed to be fun. That is why it is called paying music.
TheJonPress You're a wonderful husband sticking up for your wife like that! There is no need for you to have to explain anything because she did awesome! I sang this at a party w/ a band and its HARD to sing! I trained my already trained voice for months! I am sorry that was such a difficult day for her, but singing is such a release! There's always going to be the "haters" out there that get off on hurting people! Where does the band play? Calif??
better than 99.9 % of people that try to sing this song. She kicked ass on it. Might not be Bianca Antoinette but I'll bet Laura sings this better now than Clare Torrey could today. jmo but this was pretty good
Granted Laura does a great job, but this is not Clare. I don't believe Clare has performed Great Gig live since 1990. I wish I could see Clare sing it live. Singers of famous songs have a tendency to "morph" their version into something very different. It'e easier for someone else to listen to a song thousands of times and copy it perfectly.
I don't know if it's just me and another poster here, but that is Clare Torrey. I looked up Laura Press, and apparently there is nothing on google listing a singer that even vaguely could pull that off so exactly. Alan Parsons originally set up the studio session for Pink Floyd's Great Gig. If there are members here as listed it stands to reason she might participate. gotohoward...I looked Clare Torry up on Wikipedia and she did sing with the Alan PArsons Project, but the [picture on Wikipedia does not look like Laura Press at all. Clare just sued Pink Floyd a few yrs ago because she wanted song writing credit on Great Gig and she won that plus a lot of money. I don't think they're the same people, but it makes sense why you might think that!
I agree with you totally. There should have been reverb on the mic, it is the only thing missing.

Bold effort, and not half bad, but this is an excessively difficult song to sing. Full kudos from here...
