Yes, if you drag an object into your timeline, you can see the name on the left with a triangle. If you click on that and you'll see 'transform'. Click on transform and you can animate 'opacity"
Well it depends on what software you use, in this case i simply used flash and made the word a graphic. Then in the properties under color i manipulated the alpha settings to 0%. And the alpha or transparency settings is basically in almost any software.
