Mabel was born Nov. 8, 1892, and died Feb. 23, 1930. She was 37 years old, not 35.

Mabel was never a suspect in the two murder scandals that tainted her later career. She was called upon as one of the primary witnesses. There never was any proof of drug addiction on her part; this has been exaggerated over the years by over-eager biographers. Scandal may have played an unfortunate part in her life, but it was not of her doing.

I think they should say Chaplin is the male Normand. If it weren't for her, Chaplin would be a footnote

Both Normand and Arbuckle were brought down by scandals of which they were entirely innocent -- but facts didn't matter to those guardians of public morality in the 20s and 30s who felt that filmmaking itself and comedy in particular was sinful. Was Mabel also a drug addict? Not according to those who knew her best and were interviewed after her tragic death from tuberculosis in February 1930.

Come on, horarwgt. Not entirely "innocent". They lived fast lives, drugs, alcohol, parties, fast cars, fast crowds. If you live that way for very long you are going to rue the day -- something ALWAYS catches up with you.

I stand by my statement that both were brought down by specific scandals of which they were entirely innocent. Arbuckle was one of the most prim, proper, scandal-free stars in Hollywood during his era. Can't say the same for Virginia Rapp, the part-time actress/full-time hooker he did NOT kill. And as I said, there has never been any proof that Normand was a drug addict. You simply equate everyone in showbiz with sin, which is unfair. People in other industries are hardly all angels.

Mabel Normand worked well with Keystone Pictures. One of the greatest stars of the 1910s/20s silent film era, she was the female version of Charlie Chaplin. Sadly her life became a personal train wreck of scandal and drugs that lead to her death in 1930.
