@mushere2k9 and carphilly is literally 30 miles from where i live, :) ive seen the statue of tommy and its one of few things that make me proud to be welsh :) cymru am beth !!
@mushere2k9 Some other famous Welsh: Nye Bevan, Lawrence of Arabia, Alfred Wallace (originator of the theory of evolution), David Lloyd George, Owain Glyndwr, Bertrand Russell, Roald Dahl, Dylan Thomas, Anthony Hopkins, Jimmy Wilde (greatest Europen boxer), Joe Calzaghe (2nd greatest European boxer), Gareth Edwards, Laura Ashley, Robert Owen (co-operative socialist pioneer), Dafydd ap Gwilym (medieval poet), Donald Davies (computer-internet pioneer), Julia Gillard (Australian prime minister)..
@mushere2k9 Some more Welsh: John Charles the gentle giant, St Patrick, St David, Ryan Giggs, Bryn Terfel, Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, Hywel Dda, whose enlightened laws and the rights of women were set back hundreds of years by English rule, Rowan Williams, Roy Jenkins, Neil Kinnock, Michael Heseltine, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Henry Morgan the pirate, Henry Stanley, Sarah Siddons (18th century actress), Richard Wilson (father of British landscape painting), Gwen John, Manic Street Preachers, Tom Jones..

Why the question mark at the end of the title? I have liked Tommy Cooper for many decades. A caption in this video says "Everyone was taling about the 'hilarious fez donned man from Wales'". "Everyone"? I doubt most people know his Welsh connection. Bearing in mind that his mother was English and that he lived in England from the age of two, a more appropriate title would be "English Comedy Idol".
@timeclimber how dare you, tommy was WELSH+ENGLISH but his was more welsh than english due to more welsh family members, he was born in wales, so technically hes more welsh than english,
@mushere2k9 Which is more more important "technical" or "actual"? Ancestry is only one part of identify. A key part of anyone's identitiy is the environment of their formative years. He was brought to England at the age of two. As his mother was english, I doubt that the welsh influence would have outweighed her influence and that of his Exeter home and local environment. As far as I am aware, he didn't spend much of his life in Wales.
along with the things said in the video, that music would bring tears to the eyes... What a brilliant man in so many ways... His life was certainly a fulfilling one bringing so much happiness and laughter to so many... To say he was ahead of his time would be a big understatement... He died doing something he loved though and something that many others also loved.. A sad loss to the world and all in it, a comedic genius and genius of magic, RIP Tommy.
Well, I originally came from Somerset 43 years ago to N. America. I swear, whenever I have brought up the name Tommy Cooper as as being another of the great British funny-men, no-one, but no-one has ever heard of him. A bit like Dick Emery.
@smithhedgehog -Tommy, got a magic set as a child. While performing tricks for his parents, he got flustered and messed up tricks. He noticed he got laughs and then added jokes and "fake" mistakes to his act. And yes, he was a skilled magician and a member of the "Magic circle". He was a modest genius of the highest order as he said -"I don't know what it is I'm doing to make people laugh, but I'll carry on doing it!"
this is interesting. He was the funniest man on TV as far as I was concerned as a child. Despite that, I didn't know he was Welsh, and I didn't know he was even known outside the UK.
You are absolutely right about most people in the world thinking the UK and England are synonymous. At the school I'm working at, here in Taiwan, this is what is taught. The Union Jack = England. (Mind you, they also think Tower Bridge is London Bridge.)
I'm proud to be English and proud to be British and I'm proud that he was one of us, the British. The British sense of humour can't be beat, whether you are English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish.
Tommy Cooper would of found being a symbol for Welsh nationalism and division of his Country which is Britain or the UK (with Northern Ireland), as hilarious. His mum was a West Country woman and he lived there (Devon) from the age of 3. He was a Briton more than anything else, like all of us. I'm proud the UK is a nation just like the US or Australia is. A great uniter of our Country. Every part of the UK is great and funny, and Tommy Cooper is the ultimate.
I remember him on American TV. Maybe Johnny Carson or something. Then I just never saw him again. Figured people like that just retire from showbiz and you never hear about them again unless they're really famous. I didn't know he died on stage live on tv in the UK (or wherever it happened). Kind of sad. People say it's what he would have wanted but it's kind of strange hearing his death rattle. He looked frightened and was struggling to breath.
I'm English and i hate that the world sees the UK as one nation, But at the same time I'm happy about it. I'm happy it brings performers like Tommy closer to heart for me. To know he represented us Brits to the world as a collective, and made me proud to be a part of this little island, God bless you Wales for producing such talent and a great video mate.
I used to watch him growing up in London. He was the only man I saw who could reduce you to crying with laughter by just walking on stage.Did hear that he was a member of the Magic Circle but got more laughs by doing the tricks wrong. They threw away the mould when he passed on.RIP Tommy, just like that.
That was so moving, you managed to say so much about a wonderful entertainer without being patronising or sentimental, the music choice was pretty wonderful as well...... great post.
A nice tribute to a great comedian, I watched Tommy while growing up, he was so funny, I haven't seen these clips in many years and watching them again has me laughing just as hard as I did back then, great stuff, Tommy was the best.
The tune is called Any Other Name by Thomas Newman from the film American Beauty, though i think there's a few different versions of this song cos i have one which sounds a little different to this one. And Tommy you are sadly missed.
Very nice tribute to tommy and nicely put together What is the backround music called music called? Tommys comedy was fab. Eric Morecambe (who tragically died the following month) said he was fantastic now that was an honor.. .
i needed some good laughter, and have spent the last hour you tubing more tommy cooper and laughing myself to tears , he 'is' the funniest entertainer , very fitting tribute good on you, these amazing kinds of people never really die.
The best ever comedian...I remember Tommy from the 60's on my Grandmas TV,him and Charlie drake, lets not forget Steptoe and son, made it for me...Hope everyone enjoyed that,I did..Well done Inter..
The greatest Comedian ever to have lived..there was nobody like him..and never will be..it was the saddest day ever to watch him collapse on the stage.only to find out he had had a heart attack..you are missed greatly Tommy
What a beautifully put together tribute, well done! Brings back memories of me and my Mum and Dad laughing ourselves sore when I was a kid in the 70's. You can't teach this kind of humour it was just in him - he walked on stage and people laughed and they didn't even know why. Goodnight God Bless Tommy and thank-you. x
Well done. smithhedgehog seems to have misunderstood. It's a given that his tricks went awry on purpose to create the humor but as anyone whos been on stage knows sometimes "the act" can unintentionally go wrong ( a missed cue, a prop failing). Tommy's wits never failed he always got a laugh. You've made a fine tribute. Thank you.
Isn't it just fantastic that we all are still celebrating the life of TOMMY COOPER..a man who gave and still gives so much laughter...iv'e just read the TOMMY COOPER autobiography '' ALWAYS LEAVE THEM LAUGHING ''....it's a superb read...funny..sad..in-depth and very interesting...buy it or loan it from the libarary...it's the best book i've read in years...TOMMY COOPER...NEVER FORGOTTEN.
@PAIN07iGB Actually yes he was... he was a member of both the magic circle & the inner magic circle. To get into the inner... u have to perform tricks that the other members cant figure out. If he wasn't good he wouldn't have been able to do that would he???
One of Norways greatest comedians, Harald Heide Steen, died last month, also in his sixties. They both drank too much. Why is that so? People that have so much to give to others, the ones who brighten our lives and make us laugh ("laughter prolonges life") ~
why are they so sad inside that they have to

A lot of thought and love has gone in to this. I Hope you won. it's nice to think that young people like yourself appreciate the genius of someone like Tommy Cooper. Thanks for the memories Tommy and thank you intercitySwallow for your endeavour. For it surely succeeded. A true Welsh History Idol. Tommy Cooper. RIP
A very thoughtful and moving tribute! I was trying to explain Tommy to my grandson - an aspiring (and unconsciously funny) prestidiginator. When we watched some of the clips on YouTube he was almost in tears with laughter - and that's the essence of Tommy Cooper you have captured.
What a fitting tribute, I was blessed to know him when I was a child as Tommy often worked alongside my dad. He would pull coins out from behind my ears!. I remember watching on TV that night at Her Majesty's and laughing out loud thinking it was a gag and then crying when we realized what had happened. Last year, I was privileged to perform on that very stage and although it was a big night for me, I remembered Tommy and my Dad who had also since passed and I felt a little sad.
