The mythbusters tried that, and I have done it dragging him with a Dodge 2500 wee little pickup. The chain pretty much breaks clean. Generally people are not standing close enough to get whacked by the chain.
Dont say that too sure ! I've smashed a tractor windscreen while trying to tow start it together with my father: I thought it was running so i closed the throttle a little too far: as soon as i noticed it wouldnt run, i engaged the clutch again when the chain was hanging loose: it whacked up, broke and swung right over the hood into the windscreen.
I agree, a tense chain wont hit people, but when it hangs down and you yank it, it can swing up, snap on the go and whack the driver.
yep. chains don't store much energy in them. when they break, the sheer weight of the chain is enough to negate any potential energy. it just falls to the ground.

Dude you are some sorta fucked up. If that that chain was to snap it would take out any body part it hits. You think that that 30-50 pound chain is enough to stop 1+ (prob way more) tons of pressure
hahaha maybe you should stick to your little hondas, my friend. it's a well-known fact that chains do not stretch under load, and thus do not possess potential energy. compared to a cable or a strap, the chain is the safest choice. (though with a proper strap, you can use that potential energy to help get you unstuck in a recovery situation.) in a flat tow like in this video, it's all dead weight so any risk factor is negligible, assuming the cable/chain is rated for this load.
if you knew anything about trucks, you'd know this. but of course your recovery experience is limited to pulling your ricer piece of shit out of a wet grass field after spinning out of a parking lot trying to drift a FWD. get a real fucking car.
I have seen 2 inch link chain snap on the farm while pulling equipment out and it does not slap around like everybody thinks it will like alexrex20 said just fall to the ground and a chain is a hell of alot heavier than a cable or a strap a strap will snap around like a rubber band and a cable will splinter but a chain will break and fall
@nchayfarmer i was towing a dodge the other year and the chain broke and came back and broke out my windshield it can happen just because it never happend to you does not mean it cant happen
@hood7880 and i even got pics of where the chain came back broke the grill went up the hood and across the windshield.... but i was jerking on the truck trying to get him out. big defferance between just pulling someone at like 5 miles an hour but if your goin like 20 or 30 miles an hour they will break and whip ive seen it and done it
hell, that aint bad, come to michigan and get a set of graveltrains stuck and try to pull them out
11 axles on the ground with 154000 lbs=lots of fun in the spring

i have been dragged in and out of construction sites
semis cant get through the mud like 4 wheel drive pickups. when stuck in the mud bulldozers are the best bet to drag a semi in or out of a jobsite
