I also know this style. In fact this Style was the Foundation of Snaking Popping Style, Tutting Popping Style and Waving Popping Style in the Hip-Hop Culture, thanks to the twisting angles from this Fighting Style.
This style is excellent self-defense for ladies in that it doesn't require much force in order to be effective. But for those who are fond of tournaments forget it. You definitely can't use this because the snake fist contains forbidden strikes and techniques. This is way too deadly to be used in tournaments. I for one don't like to study it yet.
the lower back does not lock up as the training required to perform snake effectively will make the spine stronger than you can imagine. If you perform the movements without the correct conditioning you will not walk again. There is much behind snake technique and forms.
Good point, but I think she just did that to emphasize her backward retreat movement though. It's common to see similar exaggerated movements in wushu performances.
That only applies to typical fighters not to persons with such extraordinary agility, flexibility, speed, control, accuracy, kung or fighting technique. Actually in Helen's case leaning back helps her avoid potentially lethal blows and allows her to zone in on her next move be it defensive or attack. Just my two little cents.
and i know you can use the float to avoid punches and kicks.
but my comment is based on 26 years in the fighting arts"including both chinese and japanese" arts. now i'm sorry if people cant simple take a good constructive comment for the value it contains. like i said i didn't mean to put antone down,i sais she's good! i maybe just maybe,i'm not your typical fighter.
Obviously it is born in mind that "snake style" as such has some elements of modern wushu for show purposes and it is somewhat unrealistic to think that she would use every single move in a real fight, what would probably happen in a real street scuff is that instead of leaning so far back she would probably bob and weave or duck much like a boxer. Again my 2 cents.
but if you pause the video at :22 you will see clearly that all the guy has to do is keep coming forward or shoot in for a single leg and use jujitsu. but it doesn't really matter to me,the right path is what matters.
If you try to use this type of martial arts in the United States you have 99% chance of getting killed

like the greatest master said :)
be water it can flow or it can crash she certaily flows :)

i don't like they way she leans into her own back,i know she's good. but that is a big mistake in real fighting.
the lower spine locks up,you can see this as reason for losing even in western boxing.

well thanks.
you see i got -4 from people on my comment. o well, just being honest!
I'm not trying to put anyone down, she's real good!
and you might be right. maybe it is over exaggerating it.
i think it was a great performance, but still never lean in you lower spine. once you do that there's on where to go.
thanks!
