  • follow me on twitter @hayleyglinka

    i'll follow back!

  • Very well said... we had the same issue at Phoenix WordCamp... good to hear the issue from you :)

  • Chris thank you for sharing your thoughts about how Twitter can unfortuntely contribute to a disempowering energy - rather than being used as a tool to lift the conference energy and environment. Good food for thought!

    ;)

    Amy Miyamoto (@LotusAmy on twitter)

  • Looks like some not so nice things were said about Chris.

  • i do some speaking on a altrnet topic And i belive the same keep your negitivity at the door

  • Listen to yourself..Chris...stop crying... you can't be the center of attention all the time

  • my point exactly......

  • If you wanna play online, then just stay home. LOL.

  • If I were to go to a conference; I wouldn't bring anything with me but my brain and attention. If you're distracted with the internet, twitter, etc... then you're not going to pay attention. You can hear the words and write them down, but that doesn't necessarily mean you are paying attention or fully comprehending what is being spoken. It IS disrespectful and kind of depressing to see everyone at gnomedex typing away when the whole point of being there was to LISTEN to speakers.

  • I couldn't agree with you more Chris. It reminds me of trolls on the Internet. Never anything positive to say.

I think Twitter also ties into distractions at school. Students are always texting instead of listening to the teacher. It seems so disrespectful to do that. Same thing with Twitter.

  • He starts monologuing! He starts like, this prepared speech about how *feeble* I am compared to him, how *inevitable* my defeat is, how *the world* *will soon* *be his*, yadda yadda yadda.

  • I think you are right abut Twitter I no Conferences can drag on same time but if your are on twitter more then taken same sort of notes of the conferences I do not think you should be there because if you take same sort of notes of the Conferences you mite learn same think even if it not much but it could be yours full for you.

  • you have voices in your head

  • yes inearmonolouge

  • You're right

  • i love the way all the comments are about the legality of how the video was taken, instead of the actual point of the video lol a bit ironic. but good video, good points well made, if people don't have anything nice to say they shouldn't say anything at all! some people just dont appreciate the effort that is put into arranging events like this.

  • everytime you make videos from your car, with that light on. All I can picture is "large marge" from pee wee's big adventure.

  • he started moving after like 40 seconds

  • twitter = GAY

  • twitter is baad

  • Myspace is still around? ha

  • It's human nature. People love to complain, tear apart and put down people.

I love constructive criticism where you can see what you did wrong and try to improve for next time.

Such criticism I get all the time @ uni. It's motivational.

Personal attacks and such are just pointless and comparable to playground antics. If you have a complaint then try and balance it with a positive because in everything bad there is something that is good.

People do not digest or think before tweeting.

  • Did Chris ever work at Microsoft in Seattle?

  • Sometimes it's okay to keep your thoughts to yourself Chris? Too much negativity? Well hey dumb ass someone sent you the link to this video to tell you there's a difference between people who keep it real and people who're hypocritical... Idiot!! Sorry I couldn't resist lol!

  • I don't use twitter.

  • hey Chris

well i think your right i understand that your driving and making this video but sometime you get a idea that you have to talk about for you and other people to understand. keep up the good work bro

  • You should not be making videos while driving a car. Period.

  • Im pretty sure that its technically legal. You are not allowed to have any electronic devices on your person, but talking to a camera is legal.

  • I'm pretty sure he's not moving

  • Great video,it's great to see somewon so open and direct to the point.bye the way don't let your eyes off the road.

  • don't worry he wasn't really being direct and to the point ... it was dramatic overplay XD

  • you should have sneaked a firewall that blocked twitter behind the main router!!!!

  • yeah that would make them feel sad because they would have to lissen.

  • I agree

  • I shut off the video after 6 minutes. Got the jist of the video...Twitter at conferences is bad.

  • Twitter can be like a drive-by shooting. Someone takes a shot and then speeds off.

You're not going to stop people from tweeting at conferences due to mobile phones, the TwitterPeek (LOL) and other tech. But I think there needs to be some discussion about how to have an opinion properly. YouTube comments are the perfect example. People say what they want until they are confronted, and then many times back down. They need to learn the correct way to have an opinion. Great video.

  • Chris have to understand that there is a difference between opinions and negative comments.

  • i get what hes saying in all this but for awhile kinda seemed like he was just ranting/bitching about peoples opinions on what he had to say

  • What happened? Somebody not like chris's keynote or something?

  • another in car video! These are cool!

  • Twitter at a conference? My first thoughts were immediately, Horrible idea... Twitter is a drive by social network. (I.E. people rarely are held responsible for negative feedback because they wash away in the mass amounts of tweets).

The word you were looking for regarding your speech is "abstract" - you have a much more philosophical take on social media and community. I think it's brilliant myself, but the problem with abstract ideas is only certain people appreciate it.

  • So a lot of people said he sucked. And he can't get over it.

  • I enjoyed your keynote. In my opinion, if you attend a conference you have to be open minded about what's going to happen. A conference called Leweb, is going to be about all aspects of the online world.

  • my steam account just got hijacked, can anyone hekp me get it back please?

  • @xULDxSnIpEsx NO YOU're DOOMED!

nah i'm just joshing. steam forums will help

  • k thanks xD

  • what car were you driving?

  • @arneduym

It should be his Toyota Prius

  • @piedotcom oo cool, we have a toyota too^^

  • I hadn't a lot of conferences with twitter but in my opinion twitter is too dynamic for a (over a longer period) prepared presentation (perhaps even surplus). But anyway I don't think twitter forces the upcoming presenter into not concentrating...

And of course it depends on the topic of the presentation. For example: If it is a "socialmedia"-presentation about twitter it is a must to do.

  • Whoo!!! It's neat you are talking to us in your car....driving!!

  • hear him, hear him well said Chris i concur

  • nooo

  • I have no important place in technology or the internet social media, but I would really love to attend one of those conferences. I'm very enthusiastic about technology and the directions it's taking.

  • do u live in seattle?

  • @nissan501

he lives just outside of Seattle, i live about half an hour from him.

  • Have you ever met him? I would really like to.

  • what city, i live in Tacoma. about a 30 min drive.

  • dud you can cruch

    jeje :P

    nice video

  • you can hear the prius electric engine noise working to move the car. saving gas environmentally friendly lol

  • ahh prius's suck. they're really just a gimmick since its really only electric powered up to 15mph. Then the combustion engine takes over the job. how often and how long does the average person maintain 15mph? not to long. Also the more technology you pack into a car, the less reliable its going to be. Its been proven time and time again that diesel's are far more efficient and reliable than both gasoline and hybrid cars. most diesel cars can reach up to 70mpg, lets see a prius do that.

  • yeah lol i just wanted to make a funny comment lol. I don't get the prius i heard making the prius puts more c02 in the atmosphere than a hummer

  • lol I wouldn't doubt it.

  • Negative feedback for a conference like LeWeb is a crucial part of its existance. Using Twitter at a variety of conferences can be beneficial to some more than others.

  • Blah blah blah..... CAR CRASHHHH

    LOL

  • i agree

  • sounds like Chris got some hate in France.

  • why would you need power outlets when macs have such good battery life? ; )

  • my dad always told me "opinions are like assholes, everyone has one".. no, I'm not calling Chris Pirillo an asshole!

However, I do disagree with you.. if you can't take the comments people are tweeting about, don't read them.. when I speak at conferences, I often have my name on search in my TweetDeck feed so I can see what people are saying.. because I use the negative comments as a way to fix what I'm doing in the next sessions..

  • I completely agree with you Chris. I saw some of the negative feedback, and it's rude. These people are trying to do a presentation, so they should give them there full attention not tweeting how they don't like it.

  • I agree too!

  • Yo Chris, shake them haterz off ya back...nahmean??

  • I watched the video so I know he did. What I was saying is that you can't push something and then tell people it's bad when it's not used the way you want it to be used. Sending mixed messages isn't the best thig to do. Either you are for something or you're not.

  • Great video Chris. I agree completely with what your saying.

  • i couldn't agree more with chris, i don't think twitter should be at Conferences if you do go to conferences you don't go there to twitter, its rude not to pay attention to the person who on stage, it is surtenley not ok to attack people through twitter its fine to give creative citasisem without bring the person down but dont do it through twitter do it through other means. great video chris

  • Should we be tweeti.. I mean, driving, while attending a confere...uh, I mean traffic?

  • you're right Chris. if not to ignore negative it wil be more negative from both sides. thanks you for this speech

  • I don't use twitter at all!

  • Chris you can't push twitter one minute then when it's used in a negative way bash it as it being one of the worst thing a person could do. Sure they used it at the wrong time but they used it. I mean it could have been worse to the point where when you got up to speak everyone just walked out. Im glad they didnt because that would have been total disrespect to you.

Community good or bad is still a community.

  • is it not ill legal to have your interar light on in your car while driving/

  • @BuekiOvRMD yah that's what I was just thinking lol

  • yes it is illegal to have your interior light on while driving (in most states) ... but if you study the traffic outside his window you will come to the conclusion that he's not moving

  • Yes he is... Check the posts and traffic lights

  • I thought it was even not legal while in traffic, but he is moving just not fast.

  • I guess if the traffic is tight enough to see that there are no cops around to catch him :-P

  • I always try to have a little takt when giving critasisum. And as sJeGaJn said It is ironic that you are saying this after the, you are an idiot for using the wrong form of that word, videos.

  • Chris, I like what you do, but I don't think you should be doing these while driving.

  • @sJeGaJn

    exactly lol

  • lmao ... this coming from the guy calling people dumb ass/idiot for misspelling words XD

  • Dramatic overplay to general problems versus targeted personal attacks? Not quite the same.

  • I might have misunderstood, but aren't the targeted personal attacks what makes Twitter bad for conferences? the fact that they aren't constructive just rude insults doesn't make them the same thing but you have to recognize that they do have those things in common ... and those things are what makes them not liked

  • True enough and if he wanted dramatic overplay he could have worn a sombrero and schooled the individual/s with a Spanish accent or walked like the terminator in front of the camera and talked in an Arnie voice. The words he so eloquently exclaimed weren't necessary.

  • Preach on, Chris.

  • what car do you drive in this video

  • um i think it might be his prius

  • @Hayeshacker2

    Rolls Royce Phantom

  • lol
