  • okay all the comparing i have to be apart of lol.....

so i think kristen did an okay job on this part but i felt like i didnt get the connection or as i say it in my head i didn't get enough out of her

    but this girl did phenominal

its really mean to campare a community actress to a broadway veteran and hollywood star...so shut up

  • Rowell has a really fine voice.

This song wasn't in the movie version with Shirley Jones. Willson wrote a song especially for Jones in the movie. It was called "Being In Love." The bridge was identical to this but the rest was done for Jones. Barbara Cook sang this song in the original Broadway production.

Again, Rowell is Broadway quality. I like this very much!

  • This was really good. This is such a hard song to do. It kicked my butt when I did it in high school. This was very good. I think maybe a bit too much vibrato on the last A flat but still very good.

  • She sounds beautiful!! I love it. I'm going to sing it next month in a production and my director keeps telling me to cut out the vibrato, and break up the phrases! He wants to kill it. I like this!

  • My school did this whne I was in the 12th grade I ended up playing a townsperson so that was kind of fun. I wish there was a way for me to put it up on here because I have a copy of it on DVD.

  • Isn't this a bit too high?

I don't remember Kristin Chenoweth singing it so high...

  • very good voice...but why stage it so that winthrop enters during her last thrilling note? very odd blocking

  • I love Kristen Chenoweth just because she's a great actress who can make a lot of hard things seem easy, but I'd agree that this lady did a better job with this particular song. :)

  • ha my middle schoool did this play! it was so fun! i was just a dancer

  • What a cool "ring"... it just spins off and well...rings!

    Thanks for Posting!

  • i just love this song. and this woman's performance.

  • OMG! Someone singing the ACTUAL version in the RIGHT KEY!!

I haven't seen this on youtube before. :D My favourite song from when I played Marian.

I really like her rendition. I'll have to see if I can upload mine sometime.

  • haha i think it's funny that someone said Sondheim's stuff is classical. it's standard musical theatre or some of could even be considered contemparary. but i agree Music Man is a great show and i love this song =)

  • she's singing it in the normal key dumbasses. and just because the camera isn't zoomed in on enormous cleavage doesn't mean she's bad. very nice voice. i think i'm gonna record myself singing this song. she's really good though.

if you don't know shit about music, just don't bother posting, because you'll just get yelled at!

  • omg that was so good! what a gorgeous voice! perfect for that song!

  • WOW

  • Also, for Chenowith, it was transposed down so she wouldn't have to push the high notes. This lady sings at the range it was written, which is tougher than Kristen's version.

  • I don't know why people are rating this comment down. It's true.

  • Thank you!! It is true. What is wrong with people. Nothing against Shirley Jones or Kristen Chenowith. They just aren't Barbara Cook!

  • @chgoboy69 maybe you should do your research before you post. her name is spelled Kristin Chenoweth. Not Kristen Chenowith.

  • @clemsonchick8907 Yeah, whatever. Still doesn't improve her voice.

  • Very beautiful rendition. This is a tough song. They knew that Shirley Jones, as much as we love her, didn't have the range to do it. So they wrote "Being in Love" for her. Barbara Cook's original of this is still the standard. But this lady is remarkable! Chenowith is so-so.

  • This was quite brilliant. She makes the really high notes seem like their not that high. I have to sing this in our highschool play of Music Man, and its not an easy song, but she does it wonderfully.

  • I meant: "all I can say is amazing!"

  • all I can is amazing!

  • Is the version with 'being in love- what a lovely dream' only in the 1960s version of the movie? I preferred that version. Ah well.

  • Beautiful voice.

  • hmmm... kinda stuck here

they both have great voices but I think that Kristin had a better interpretation of the song, she looked like she was thinking about each word in the movie, while this one (even though I can't see her face) looked like she was just singing what the director told her too.

    still.. nice voice!

  • Chenoweth did this during a movie, with all the professional support available, and which was edited until perfect...quite a difference. Fact is this girl's voice is better. Great vibrato.

  • i love everything except how she suddenly sings so loudly in the upper register. its like piano piano FORTISSIMO

  • great sets

  • This girl sings the song as it should be sung. Her voice is remarkable. Chenoweth's voice is not unique; if you heard it without seeing her, you could not identify the singer. This singer's voice has its own personality...I heard her videos for Anything Goes. She belts in the tradition of Garland, Bassey, and all the legends of music; she is simply marvelous.

  • its a bit boring... great voice but a bit boring... i'd go with Chenoweth

  • This is a boring song and no one can change that fact.

  • I used to think that, too, but it's really a wonderfully written and compact little piece of musical characterization, telling us a lot about Marian in the short span of three minutes. As such, it really is something of an aria, I suppose (and I'm not a big fan of trying to cross opera with musical theater, only because it's not easily done and has been successful in only a handful of instances).

  • Bravo!!!!

  • not bad but why the fake tag? it has nothing to do with Kristin Chenoweth save they both played the same part.

  • What are you talking about - what "fake tag"? This girl does not have the benefit of an arranger or large orchestral support and yet, I find her voice comparable, if not better, than the professionals who performed this song. She is also a great belter. Check out her Anything Goes performances.

  • By "fake tag" he meant that the one who posted the vid put the words "Kristen Chenoweth" in the tags section... so that someone actually searching for Kristen might go here. He wasn't knocking this lady's performance.

  • If I had to compare Chenoweth with this gal, I would vote for this gal. Her voice is much better. Chenoweth has the advantage of professional arrangers and a much better orchestra and still she does not compare favorably to this Marion. I also saw the videos of this gal doing Anything Goes, and can say - this gal is better looking - without the benefit of a professional makeup artist. Fact! Another fact, - this performance is LIVE. A movie cuts out the mistakes.

  • Hmm, I'd have to go with Chenoweth. Her interpretation of any song I've seen is amazing. And I've seen many live recordings of her... just as amazing. Charlie Brown, Wicked, you name it. I think the singer in the above video is still excellent, just a difference of opinion/taste.

  • To each his own. I give more credit to great voices who achieve the ultimate in performance without the aid of professionals. I too have seen Chenoweth perform on stage and was not terribly impressed. She's good, but not great. Also keep in mind that in all those performances you listed there were fantastic professionals behind stage to aid and abet her.

  • Super!! What a voice. I must check out her other videos.

  • Wow, powerful voice. Great job on a very difficult song! I wish the video was zoomed into her face a little more. Its hard to get see the expression that was surely evident live.
