this is absolutely amazing. personally I like the store cat trees. but they are extremely expensive i was lucky that my 4 level cat tree was only $80 with shipping and handling. but I want to have a second one. for another room so i just might follow some of what you did here. What type of rope and carpet did you use? and how much supplies did you end up needing?
i like this, looks a lot better than the ones at the store, and im sure it costs a lot less ( about to look at your website, lol) the "form fit: to the corner is pretty sweet also
good looks on the korpiklaani. beer beer! your link is dead though, sadly, i (and others, i'm sure) would very much appreciate a minimal blueprint or tutorial for something like this.
Very impressive!!! If they've worn it out, it's definitely from love!! We're looking to build one this next week and we will definitely be using your video for some great ideas, thank you!
Wow....awesome job! I have watched this a several times and just now read the comments. I'm LOL because one of my FAV parts is the "pattern" you chose for the rope. I think it's fantastic. VERY classy looking! Definitely MUCH better looking than the expensive Pet Store Chain ones! Two thumbs WAY up!!
lol the last thing i expected to hear in the background of a cat condo tutorial was korpiklaani..excellent choice in music and thanks for sharing your ideas! =)
I love it. You did an awesome job. I am in the process of building a two story one but who knows I may go higher now. Thanks for the great video and your cats are so cute!
This looks great! I want to make a scratching post for my cats today. I got loads of ideas from this. I tried to access your link but got a 404 error message. xx
lol so cool thay must realy like you i have one tip maybe cet som catnip an make a swall bag out of cloth and put some cat nip in it then put stuffing in it and so the open side up so thears no gaps and atath it to some rope about one centermetre thick and put it on the cat tree pleas reply if you do and maybe make a vid ,i subed
Indeed, in stores you see many less than half this size for almost $250-$300 (locally anyways), whereas making one yourself can run about $60 and as little as 3-6 hours of work.
For you do-it-yourself ppl, I also recommend using some PL to help bind it all. It will save you a lot of headache down the road.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you did this instead of buying an "ugly" cat tree. the ones sold in shops are a lot better than that thing you made. no colour n not as much comfort. :l and you idiots commenting "I made a smaller one with a box and a platform!" Wow, i bet your cats are bored. fuck you
I forgot to mention, this comment made my day when you posted it, I was lolz. If you think it was ugly in the video (a few years old now), you should see it today; the cats worn it out.
@trentdk hes jealous because he doesnt have half the brians to build one himself... i would buy that over some green lumpy peice of shit that cost $200.... VERY nice job bro
@catCRAAAZY Well, I wouldn't have put it quite -that- way; but I was thinking along similar lines. We thought about making our own cat tree, years ago; but could never decide on a design; plus my husband really didn't have the time to devote to it. You can get nice, large cat trees prefabricated online for around $150 (including shipping). That's the way we went. By the time you purchase wood, carpeting, sisal rope, etc. you probably wouldn't save all that much $.
Great cat tree! Made all the better by your music choice! Korpiklaani rocked at Paganfest this year. Hope you got a chance to see them too! Anyways, I love the cat tree design. I think I may tweak it as a basis for one I plan on building. Thanks for posting the video!
Nice looking cat tree! I've been inspired to build my own tree. I'm thinking of also finishing the post and wrapping the sisal rope the same way you did. My kitten thanks you. :)
Pretty cool, but you should have made the top perch big enough for two cats. As it is, only one of the cats gets to sleep in the perch, and the other one may feel left out.
I agree, it would sadden me if they couldn't sleep together -- and in fact they do! It may not look like it in the video, but they both curl up together in that top perch :) Sometimes we'll walk by and just see two tails hanging out of the hole :). Both cats, however, are 'petit' and max out at 9 lbs.
Kudos on the kraft dood! I searched for your video after having started one of my own for my cats, too. Will add a vid of it and maybe some hints. I used clamps and carpenters glue for the carpet adhesive, things like liquid nails is a bad idea, is toxic (and flamable) just a tip. Again GOOD JOB! WIll check out your site, too.
If you have all the tools necessary, then materials were around $40, easy. It depends on how "scrappy" you are :) In a nutshell: 3 2x4s, one 4x4 MDF, one 4x4 1/4" plywood, 2 dowel rods, and a couple feet of 8' carpet.
Why would price an animal its like saying how much a child cost. Just go to your local animal shelter and ask to adopt a cat you would only have to pay a donation fee of at least 60 dollars.
The base is cut from a 3/4" thick MDF board. The 2x4s were attached with screws from underneath, and with steel braces used in framing houses. Then the base was wrapped in carpet, and rope was use to cover the braces and provided scratch areas.
Looks like loop pile carpet on the video, which isn't recomended because cats can get their claws caught in them and injure themselves. Great design; I see the base fits the outer corner nicely!
Good point 79catcer. Thankfully my cats haven't acquired any injuries (they've actually pulled most of the loops out, heh). Note to everyone else: use cut pile carpet (the stuff you see standard in houses).
Yea, it was very inexpensive to build. 2x4s for the towers, plywood for the platforms, dowel rods for the supports, and carpet and manila rope for grip. The song is korpiklaan - happy little boozer.
