I know you guys like Hitch. He repeatedly scorned theism for its appeal to celestial authority over the individual. It seems that a lot of my own comrades hold the same position, but want state authority over the individual. Doesn't that creat some kind of cognitive dissonance?
Do you even know why they are exempt from taxes ?, if you know anything about history you should already know that taxing a religion gives the state authority to regulate religion and vice versa. History is full of cases were the State used religion and religion used the state to control the masses and when a religion pays taxes it is given certain rights that allow it more political clout because Churches can use a large tax base to influence policy.
The government should not be doing anything for anyone, they should leave us the hell alone and let spontaneous order happen. I don't like gov cronies or bloodshed around the world like the republicans and democrats.
I feel like some atheists have really sold themselves short by taking up the religion of statism.
It would be like asking what will Ron Paul do for "Union Workers" or the "LGBT" he doesn't caterer to special interest groups. I'm a Baptist and I don't care what Ron Paul is going to do for Baptist voters, the thought never crossed my mind. If Ron will bend over backwards for one group why not bend over for another? How about the Aryan Nation. I like my Ron Paul just the way he his CONSISTENT and treats everyone EQUALLY.
Ron Paul believes that government should neither promote nor prohibit any particular religious belief. Atheists should vote for Ron Paul for the same reason that a religious person should vote for him: so that we can build a society where we all live peacefully together.
@odinsragess Please show me a working model of successful country with a wholly privatized model of education. I urge you to consider the consequences of privatization for the entirety of this nation's children.
I am hyper-informed, but I don't really see you thinking beyond the rhetoric you espouse to consider consequences of policy
Issues listed above are reasons atheists would be concerned about public policy & want politicians on record- not specific issues w/ RP
@YT420rt He didn't have the time because his campaign chose to do a photo op instead of actually engage in answering the questoins of voter. If you don't understand why atheists and all americans would be concerned with an individual that is a young earth creationist, would privatize all education, abandan public investment in research and technologies, then I am sorry. We ask a civil open question, you call people names.
@NatnlAtheistParty (Pt.1/2) I honestly couldn't care less about his religious beliefs. And actually, I'm somewhat glad that he does have Christian morals, which are usually favorable. I'm an atheist, but I recognize that most Christians are not fundamentalists, and are extremely decent people with a strong moral compass. I agree with him on privatizing education, as government can't handle...well, anything really. The public school system is a joke, and I agree homeschooling/community based...
//I'm somewhat glad that he does have Christian morals, which are usually favorable//
really? to what exactly? you are no atheist if you can make a comment like that with a straight face. IF christians have "a strong moral compass" it ISN"T because they got their morality from the bible THAT'S for sure.
what the fuck do you people want him to do for atheists? establish the National Office of Atheist Tolerance or some bullshit like that? the role of government is not to do anything for any one specific group of people, but to protect the liberty of everybody so we can hold whatever beliefs we so choose. i'm an atheist, and i don't think anybody needs to "do" anything for me. i sure as hell don't want the government wasting my tax money to kiss the ass of any one group, even if i'm in it
@Fire2thePig Just a few: Stop interference with contraception at home & abroad. Take a stand on prayer exemption. Stop exceptions & subsidies for religious institutions that aren't extended to secular institutions. Mandate that childcare, healthcare & senior care facilities aren't exempt from health & financial standards expected of all others.
Investing in science & education to compete with other nations. Sorry you are unaware or apathetic to these issues. The NAP is not.
1. No problem, Paul is against regulating the morning-after pill, and thus would be against regulating contraception.
2. Federal subsidies? Or state subsidies? usually we're talking about a state-level subsidy or tax break. He's against public funding of religion or non-religion.
3. I'm sorry but Dr. Paul is not Elizabeth Warren, so he won't be doing mandates like the one you suggest.
4. Dr. Paul would not "invest" in science because he believes science works best when the government is not involved. I recall some bright guys with surnames like Newton, Einstein, Kepler etc were not on government payroll. Nor are Dr. Michio Kaku or Neil deGrasse Tyson.
5. In respect to Education, Ron Paul like most conservatives/libertarians believes that the government is not capable of providing adequate education, instead preferring private schooling.
Just to clarify, I am a far-right libertarian who agrees with the NAP on most issues, except where the NAP takes a progressive position, instead of the libertarian one. I am not an Atheist, but I would love to see more participation of Atheists in the political arena, as I believe most of the Founders would be Atheists today. (and many were in their lifetimes)
Thank you - and please get ballot access in California.
@smartwarlord The evidence that public investment in science produces results speaks for itself. Many of the technologies we enjoy today are a result of public investments. RP is ignorant or just wrong if he thinks otherwise- the evidence doesn't bear that out.
Newton - WRONG- he had a number of government and rural sponsors- and worked at Cambridge -which throughout history has received a number of endowments, subsidies and tax breaks from the government.
@CaptainPants27 i don't think anyone is disputing that public investment in science produces results. but does it produce more and better results than private investment?
@smartwarlord on Kepler - WRONG - he was funded both by organized church, and became offical astrologer or the Emperor for a time
on Einstein:- WRONG - once again Einstein first worked in a Patent office - a gov. position, he was a professor at various colleges, came from a socialized education background and training, and was a professor at Princeton that regularly receives hundreds of millions in government grants- which are the key thing we are talking about.
@smartwarlord Princeton is a private college. Princeton University manages approximately one-quarter of a billion dollars of sponsored research funding annually. These funds support research efforts at Princeton and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), which is managed by the University. The vast majority of sponsored research grants result from faculty-initiated proposals to government,
Further Kaku has partnered multiple times with the BBC- a socialized media institution.
And as for Tyson : WRONG for almost all the same reasons + he served in two commissions for George Bush and partnered multiple times with PBS - a socialized media institution.
@NatnlAtheistParty I think he'd want to end subsidies for... well... everything. As for scientific investments, his economic views (Austrian school) would oppose the government being involved with that too. He's a 'distinguished counselor' to the Ludwig von Mises institute; if you want to understand his ideology i'd suggest checking out their website. (mises.org)
They've made most of the books they publish available as free PDFs.
as an atheist, do you feel this the best way to start a conversation regardless of the question on a subject such as this? have you gone to the NAP website to find out what the reasoning is behind this question? because we as atheists are not looking for special privilages, the main concern is how will the most (unfairly) distrusted minority in america best be represented by those that intend to lead this nation and its people as a whole?

@9886635574 What a terrible thing to say! Millions of Americans have become involved in their communities, and have been inspired by that old loon. Based on your statement, it sounds like you would hope that we are deisnfranchised. Ron Paul speaks for millions- you can't just wish him away. But that's what I would expect from an individual whose username is a (apparently) random number
At this point the best thing that somebody can do about the atheist and secular voters is to create official report about evolutionary evidence by science and promote it like shit. Cuz when half of the population doesn't believe in evolution, that's kind of a problem for the 21st century...
@Narajah
Is Paul a congressman? yes.
Does the executive branch have significant power of leadership and executive order of those things? Yes.
Was the original intent of that post to answer just a few issues of why atheists would want to ask that question of any politician? Yes.
