  • I have high reguards for Rush. number 1 for me.

  • Comment removed

  • This song also reminds me of the Trailer Park Boys episode where Ricky kidnaps Alex with duct tape. Then again, many Rush songs remind me of that.

  • Wow, havent heard this song forever, its actually really remarkable. This is now one of my Rush faves.

  • great song

  • This song is perhaps Peart's most thoughtful lyrics. It's a complex, yet simple song. How can that be? I remember the Radio Station WBCN in Boston getting 100s of calls on this song because they played the album before the concert. For weeks listeners asked who sang it as it doesn't sound like Rush. Of course, being anti-Rush, BCN and other Boston stations never played it again. A-Holes. You know a good song when it's over before it should be.

  • An amazing and very reflective piece of art in a song

  • Has Rush ever done this live?

  • i believe not ! but dont shoot me .. if i am wrong ? .. probably beacuse it has violin on it .. ben minx .. played violin on this track .. as i say i could be wrong ?

    One thing i do know !! Its a F*cking Great track !!!

  • @donedave if i have read up correctly, this is one of the only songs that they have never played live. maybe it holds some sort of emotional meaning that has kept them from playing it? it is something a reporter should ask them i think because this song is a masterpiece and i would love to know why they wouldn't play it

  • @HiddenTruth666 - actually I think it has less to do w/ the emotional meaning and more w/ logistics: Rush has never toured w/ supporting musicians, it's always just been the three of them. They would need a violinist unless Alex played the violin solo on his guitar or Geddy did the solo on a synth.

  • Decline? Brutal. Some of their best work is from those albums, you just have to have a good ear for music..

  • Such an underatted song. When I first bought this album in the 80's I ignorged this tune, but its one of the best and one of Alex's best solos

  • what the Fuck are you talking about?

Ive been a Major Rush fan for thirty two years and they have always been fantastic and today they are better than ever!

some of you people just don't know shit about Music!

this next year will be my twentieth rush Concert,

    i can't wait =]

  • For you the blind, who once could see, the bell tors for the.

  • @Domopig444 the bell tors?

    Is By-Tor ringing the bell?

  • @burningxdimx Yessir!

  • @deneb18001

Signals came 2 albums before Power Windows.

    Moving Pictures->Signals->Grace Under Pressure->Power Windows

I'd call Signals their last great album. Grace Under Pressure is still one of my favorites, but I saw it as the beginning of their decline. Apropos, I think, for a comment on this particular song.

  • What's wrong with post-Signals albums?

  • just kinda boring. they still kick azz.

  • @TheAnonymouz i hear you...absolutely nothing. infact, i'm pretty sure that the reason why i love albums post signals is the same reason why i love albums pre-signals. because the music, lyrics, and performances are just as brilliant.

i've evolved over these 30 + years. i would expect rush's music to evolve also. old genesis? imagine Rush wrote genesis's song Land Of Confusion? Geeze be thankful your mind was exposed Rush's 80's brilliance. yes i'm drunk

  • @andyscearce I wouldnt say Grace Under Pressure would mark their decline. I believe Rush in the 90's and early 80's were probably their most professional as musicans. I think Rush in the 90's in my opinion was at their peak. Dont get me wrong..Power Windows etc were all great albums.

  • Peart said in a rolling stone articl that they simplified on purose. I dont see it as a decline as much as it was just a change. i am an old rush fan who loves alot of the newer stuff that would be crap to older fans.

  • for me this is the last great album of Rush for many many years...

I just laugh the other day when i listened to their 84 album... not for the music but because of the picture of the band inside the page of the cd album... Geddy Lee's look was just so ridiculous in 1984... but well ...it was 1984 ...they were so many people with absurd bad haircut... their music after 83 became just 2 FM oriented and less inspired...

Here in 82 everything is perfect...this is new wave + smart BNWOHM + Prog

  • PASS THAT SHIOT.they have alot of albums after this that kick ass.guess im just a true rush head.seen them 7 times.they never disapoint.your loss.

  • A beautiful song !one of Rush's best!

  • sorry me again ! i love the way ben mink or minx .. plays the violin solo like alex would have played it on guitar !!! class x

  • Didnt a guy called ben minks play violin on this reat song ?? i am old and guess also losing it !!! x

  • papalazerus22 asked, "Didnt a guy called ben minks play violin on this reat song ??"

Yeah, his name is Ben Mink (without the "s"), and he played the electric violin parts. He was in another Canadian trio called FM. They opened for Rush on the Moving Pictures tour, and some people thought it was Rush taking the stage when they started their set. *laugh*

They were very good musicians but not particularly advanced songwriters, so they never hit it big. Ben played a hella violin, though.

  • @Ken5244 Mink also played guitar on Geddy's Solo project in 2000 called my favourite headache

  • Permanant Waves has to be one of my all time best albums

  • I remember when this one came out. I was amazed, wandered how they would top "Power Windows" and they did or was this one before that one haha heck I cant remember any more

  • OH Neal Peart out did himself on this album All new stuff.....their New stuff doesnt compair "Snakes and Arrows" hhmmm any comments on his new writings?

  • Hearing a Rush song for the first time is an amazing experience. Each song is so unique and has it's own character. I kind of save certain albums and don't listen to them very much so that I can continue to have the experience.

  • @mineralandrollcello

that's a good attitude... not to burn all your cards all in a row... i have this attitute too sometimes... if i discover a very good band with 5 records ... i save always 1 or 2 for the following years... it's not a problem when you're a fan of 100 bands ! ... but for some who are just fans of a few bands ...i can't imagine how it can be hard to resist !

  • underated song amazing song

  • Rush = synthesizers with good taste

  • signals is my fav rush album...so many songs speak to me, especially subdivisions (more than any other song by any other band)...it helped me cope with being a confused, loner/loser in HS. other songs like this are just soothing and incredible...especially when neil really gets grooving after the violin solo.

my fav album of all time.

  • this song fills our aquifers and tingles the phychi of the soul with such grace and emotion i bleed with pure amazement of neil alex and geddy such perfect harmony of 3 and true blend of perfection x thahk the lord for giving rush to my life x

  • Fucking amazing song, and kind of sad since it depicts getting old and what comes with it.

  • exactly....Rush are probably one of the most underated bands ever. I'm 23 so I was born well before their "peak". But my Dad introduced me to them. We're from Nothern Ireland which shows their fans are based world wide :-)

  • Not only is Neil the best rock drummer in the world, he's a lyrical genius too. He's in a class all by himself.

  • If you read the album, there is a guest that plays electric violin in this song. His name is Ben Mink. This rush song has always struck me...just like all the rest. When a song, like this one, makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up you know that they have sucessfully open a part of your mind. Just to be able to hear is by far a true blessing. I couldn't imagine being deaf.

  • @visionman1962 Funny you say that.. "For you the blind who once could see, the bell tolls for thee..." But Hemmingway: what else can I say?

  • @visionman1962 ...Sir,your comment reveals a deep appreciation for quality music.

My sister got me this record when it came out....I didn't understand it,but I loved it.

Reminds me of my record player and the mystique of RUSH....

RUSH truly is a musical, lyrical, visual, and spiritual phenomenon...Spititual because they convey heartfelt feelings...like your comment.

  • @visionman1962 I know if I go def I want somone to kill me, life would have no colour, just empty.

  • i have that vinyl

  • Beautiful, sad, reflective song.

  • sure some people may say they liked rush better pre-synth era. but if it weren't for the synths and steady evolution of the band....we wouldn't have had the chance to enjoy the brilliance of this song and so many others.

  • This song brings back so many early 80's memories. The music tells the story almost as well as the words. However, the correct words at the end are...

Sadder still to watch it die

Than never to have known it

For you, the blind who once could see

    The bell tolls for thee

    The bell tolls for.....

  • perfect

  • Some are born to rule the world to live their fantasy. But most of us just dream about the things we'd like to be. Sad is still to watch it die than never to have known it. For you the blind who once could see. The bell tolls for me. The bell tolls for...

  • memories !!! so glad I have them

  • Heard this song for the first time only a couple of days ago. I really love it, very moody and atmospheric. I was only really familiar with their earlier '70's stuff.

  • for some reason this tune reminds me of RADIOHEAD, it just screams art rock. Love it.

  • Comment removed

  • The electric fiddle is great and out of character for Rush, and always reminds me of crying whale sounds.

  • The fiddle / violin is played by Ben Mink - longtime friend of the band's. Mink played in a Toronto band called FM in the late '70's / early '80's. In fact, Mink plays the strings and most of the guitar tracks (essentially co-writing) on Geddy Lee's solo project, 'My Favorite Headache'. It's been rumoured that Alex Lifeson does not play on this track, but his guitar sound is clearly evident throughout.

  • No not true, alex plays on this tune. I remember some time ago him discussing how difficult it was for him to find some space in the tune for his guitar.

  • Please read the last sentence of my comment. I know. Lifeson plays on the track. ....... his guitar sound is clearly evident throughout.

  • Sorry didnt mean anything rude. I did see you see your remarks, I was kind of talking with you not at you :) I'm a huge Lifeson Fan and a guitarist myself, I have done about 12 rush tunes on youtube and I just like to talk about Alex.

  • oh, no doubt. i played in a Rush cover band back in '99 / '00. I think Lifeson is tremendously underrated in the pantheon of popular rock guitarists. I've always appreciated how his arrangements seem so thoughtful and his playing is so efficient. He takes a simple riff like the main section of Bravado, and evokes this overwhelming emotion. The 'solo' section to Afterimage or Red Sector A. And, from this album, The Weapon. The texture and various layers on that song are amazing.

  • Yes. Thanks for uploading these. Really appreciate it.
