Well, the history of Pink Floyd has gone on to prove Hans Keller entirely wrong and make him look like an absurd, pompous idiot. Music is much louder today than it ever was in a BBC studio in 1967, Hans! Guess you should have stayed with your 'string quartet.'
I am french and i am surprised to listen this Keller saying what he says, He can't know that this group will change the world of youngs'music for a generation and now it's ever referential
Excellent great to see this after all these years. Pompous prick springs to mind for Kellers comments. I though when I originally saw this on look of the week. Happy days :)
if Keller would have simply said "it's beyond me" but instead he is compelled to appear to understand what the band was doing. I also think Waters and Barrett were incredibly restrained with the interviwer's condescending attitude. And wouldn't have blamed them at all to tell Keller to piss off.
"I don't want to prejudice you, I'll let you decide for yourself" Hans says - but the points he makes clearly are prejudiced before the viewer even heard any of it.
to be fair hans did say that perhaps its his fault he doesnt appreciate them, at least he didnt say they were rubbish as such. I do find them quite repetitive myself sometimes, still a huge fan though :)
Hans' disdain is quite English. Polite air of superiority. Ironic, don't you think, that now his only claim to fame is this clip, riding on the coattails of "this regression to childhood," while Pink Floyd is now nearly immortal. UMMAGUMMA, HANS!
@wasRIOnowWSO I think I need to inform you that Hans Keller , despite his typical English name and face ,is not English------(!!!)--and without any shadow of a doubt the man is/was a gigantic prick!---
Hans was off the mark even back then, because it had to be loud because bands like the beatles where strugling to be heard with all the screaming...loud stadium rock was the way forward....any fool could see that.
Let me get this straight: Groucho Marx doesn't like Pink Floyd because
1. Their use of repetition-driven noise is boring.
2. They're too loud.
3. They're extremely unskilled at music.
4. They have an audience (wait, that's a good point).
And then this guy shat himself when he heard John Peel hawk this new noisy, seemingly unskilled, and loud record by this American dude who thought he could sing like Howlin' Wolf.
Keller you are a condescending Jackass, and would not know genius if it slapped you in the face. Which I will further add looks like you already got hit in the face with a frying pan anyways!
Demean Hans Keller for his opinions as you will, but his attitude isn't something that's long forgotten... Anyone who's ever criticised the current music scene and complained that Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga are nothing compared to older bands like Pink Floyd should know what I'm talking about.
@Ecstatic2Ecstasy Too bad the resolution on this wasn't better, because, without any doubt, this is the best clip you're ever going to see of Syd Barrett. Astronomy Domine, a masterpiece no two f'n ways about it!
What psycho-babble bullshit the geezer offered as an "analysis"! The Floyd was so far ahead of their time that the pundits couldn't process it. This music has stood the test of time. Thanks for posting this classic!

@siouxie921 Harvested is generally regarded as the "premier" obtainer of Floyd rarities of audio & video...visit their website (harvested org) or join yeeshkul for the best and most comprehensive site for Pink Floyd collecting...they have recently compiled a new 5 dvd compilation of almost all Floyd video from '66-'83.
@crashed2ice21 Yes, but in 3 years time four guys from a town called Birmingham would release an album with a song called Black Sabbath and Heavy Metal would be born. I wonder what Mr. Keller might have thought then...
As a Pittman, I'm ashamed they were taking flack in the press from 'Robert Pittman' (which by coincidence is my dad's name) I assure you, Pink Floyd, not all Pittman's are bad, and my dad and I love you guys dearly.

No words can describe how beautiful Syd is! I actually do like the interviewer though; I certainly disagree with his comments, but I find it infinitely more intersting to hear some debate and criticism rather than the usual ass-licking that we get nowadays. I still had to laugh at that interviewer ! I like how he invites the public to place its own verdict; this means that Hans Keller treats Pink Floyd with genuine consideration as a serious music group. Priceless clip!
@Dandelionblowaway Seriously, I saw this clip and, literally, fell in LOVE! Having grown up w/ post Barrett Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here), all I can say is I was blind and now I can see.

A string quartet did some covers for Pink Floyd. These are available on youtube. Watching these on youtube it was as if it would've sounded as if Hans Keller had covered them.
comparing floyd to a string quartet is like comparing "Apples and Oranges". I still can't get over the arrogance. Almost like a Bill O'Reilly interview. Would've like to see hans in a G-string quartet, think he would look like Borat
"we met just six hours ago, the music was too loud!'
what did hans know of the pink floyd's talent? I find that string music can be quite loud and has also been used in psychedelia as well as numerous soundtracks before and after. This is long before Atom Heart Mother, of course. Volume has nothing to do with talent it but distortion and recording quality (which I think floyd was grossly cheated out of in early stuff) It's more of a technological problem.
What I can't understand is that you can't dance to pink floyd but you can to string
What a Nazi! I detect some bitterness. Even Syd is more lucid and cogent than Hans. And what's all this about shock treatment? This is certainly a good example of the changes at the time. Does he think that exposure to Pink Floyd was some sort of an atrocity that should have been used in concentration camps? I'm so there! The music is so good even in its primitive form
i am honestly way more interested in the 30 seconds of Pow. R. Toch. its certainly way more interesting than astronomy domine, both the improv and the chord progressions
thnk this comes at a time when older people could not understand or relate to rock and so tended to look down on it and were condescending towards its musicians. it wasn't taken seriously. why send him ot interview them if he hates the music or doesn't understand it. this is different from not liking this band or song. it seems he doesn't like rock period. like sending someone to review an opera who hates it.
Quite a polite and intelligent 'debate' from both sides, better than the sychophantic interviews of today Old Keller even asks permission to use an 'American' word ~ Wow!. Actually this is just school debating society stuff which Syd and Roger would have been familiar with. Suspect Keller knew they were destined for the big time. "Grown up in the string quartet"? ~ Interesting homelife
Oh that's obvious... this was long before distortion pedals and before "master volume'" controls. Maxing out the amp was the only know way to play heavy metal in 1967.
This is ...wow. I was born in 65 so of course have no idea of what was happening back then, but it is so cool to see that someone took the time to record it. I LOVE this "OLD" stuff!!!
Wow- Keller obviously didn't listen to the whole album. There are just as many "soft" songs as loud. Also, the brilliant Syd Barret composed very intricate pieces with well thought out counterpoint progressions and pitch oscillations. This particular song is one of the "loud" ones. However, Beethoven enjoyed "loud" and "violent" themes in his compositions. I'm just saying...
Hans Keller looks like a meth addict..lmao "it's too loud" I think he's just too old.. And maybe the veins bulging out of his head were keeping him from taking in what great music that was being presented.. Also he says he's "too much of a musician" is there such a thing? beingtoo much of a musician.. and by the way, what music did he ever make? where are his albums? just throwing that out there..
Awesome video. I came on here looking for live footage of Syd Barrett playing with Pink Floyd. The video I watched right before this one was Astronomy Domine 1968 and it's so sad. Syd seem pretty stable here, doing his thing playing with Floyd. Then skip to one year later (search the 1968 live version) and he's sadly lumbering in the back ground watching his former band and david play the song he written. He had to be kicked, the band hand to think about their own future, but it's sad. R.I.P
Brilliant and iconic footage ; who would have thought how historic this would become when it just seemed some freaky obscurity or odd gimmick item for many people to laugh and discriminate at
To be honest I was about to get laid into Hans Keller here, but after reading a few comments I have come to (kinda) respect him.
I agree that it's better to give the band an intelligent grilling rather than kiss their arses, that way they can defend themselves and show the audience how much they love what they do.
Hans was still a dick for saying "I won't prejudice your opinion" then going on to blast out why he disliked them!
I prefer this to modern interviewers who just sit and inflate crap musicians' egos by complementing them and treating them like gods. It's nice to see someone who challenges musicians so they have to explain their intentions and musical direction. I like this interview alot actually.
thanks!, first time I've seen this in its entirety.
Old Hans Keller is definitely not the worst interviewer from this time on British television.
& he does almost say, 'what do i know?'.
From my childhood, i remember some who really did grate and annoy me with their blinkered attitudes, this is not that bad and they give as well as take.
All in all, very exciting, and a treat to see and hear 'Pink Floyd 1' my personal favorite line up of the band.
Amazing footage for the die-hard Floyd fan! A nice live performance of anything with Syd is a real treasure, and they did a great run through of AD. Yeah, Hans comes off like a jerk, but at least it was not some scripted BS like talk shows today. He didn't like it, and he clearly stated why. But he was civil to Roger and Syd, and I thought they held their own under fire pretty well. Thanks for uploading!
Sorry to the people who will hate me for this, but the second guy(dont know his name)( has a point: their early stuff was very repetitive compared to their Waters Era music. And they were overtly experimental and weird and I can see how it wouldn't appeal to a lot of people.
@Grunge00125 i kind of agree in a way. piper at the gates of dawn is one of my favorite albums of all time. my dad also like pink floyd but he doesnt like this album at all cause songs like "Flaming" for example have no beat to it. i particularly love that song but i see how people wouldnt like it.
when I first listened to Astronomy Domine it blew me away, i never properly heard Pink Floyd or any kind of music like it, i was instantly hooked. Now i listen to psychadelic and prog rock all the time, so this song probably changed my life for the better
I think this is awesome and I love the cross banter

"Why has it all got to be so terribly loud?"

Hans Keller sound(ed) like any typical numbnutz that writes for the entertainment section of a newspaper.
Skibble5150 1 year ago

Also he says he's "too much of a musician" is there such a thing? beingtoo much of a musician.. and by the way, what music did he ever make? where are his albums? just throwing that out there..

nowadays they wouldn't allow him to smoke on camera:)

What a stuffy pompous windbag you are Hans Keller!

@lush89 youre only saying that cos u think its trendy to and get a pat on the back from other Floyd fans who want to say the same for the sake of it

Wow, this song sounds amazing live! Barrett's guitar playing is beautiful!

I prefer this to modern interviewers who just sit and inflate crap musicians' egos by complementing them and treating them like gods. It's nice to see someone who challenges musicians so they have to explain their intentions and musical direction. I like this interview alot actually.
genesisrock43 1 year ago 5
@genesisrock43 Damn right ; agree with you totally
kenfig 1 year ago
thanks!, first time I've seen this in its entirety.

I know why its not loud to them and its not loud to me either
You have to listen to it on LSD
every time Im on LSD I listen to the piper at the gates of dawn and theirs songs sound way different
they dont sound "LOUD"
Thats what i think makes Syd a genius
He knew about the other reality of music.

A classic example of the generarion gap. Unlike today's TV heads... Hans respectfully disagrees and admits the failing might be his own.
Say what you want, but that's how smart and classy people behave.

thatiamdisco 1 year ago
Sorry to the people who will hate me for this, but the second guy(dont know his name)( has a point: their early stuff was very repetitive compared to their Waters Era music. And they were overtly experimental and weird and I can see how it wouldn't appeal to a lot of people.
Grunge00125 1 year ago
@Grunge00125 i kind of agree in a way. piper at the gates of dawn is one of my favorite albums of all time. my dad also like pink floyd but he doesnt like this album at all cause songs like "Flaming" for example have no beat to it. i particularly love that song but i see how people wouldnt like it.

Awesome. If I was tripping at this show I would probably be bugging out....

and what did hans keller accomplish in his life time compared to pink floyd? case closed. boom, roasted
low72 1 year ago
when I first listened to Astronomy Domine it blew me away, i never properly heard Pink Floyd or any kind of music like it, i was instantly hooked. Now i listen to psychadelic and prog rock all the time, so this song probably changed my life for the better
