This is probably the best ever version i have ever seen or heard. Fabulous actors and sorry if their accents arn't tip top to some of you, but as an Englishman I rekon they had a pretty good crack at it! Also watch "Ladies who lunch" Ms. Gish is fantastic.
I am not a fan of this version at all. The actress playing Amy is screaming- not singing. And when she is singing, it is all over the place (tone, pitch, musicality, rhythm). Also, her accent or dialect (whatever you want to call it) is very distracting and at some points just annoying. Definitely voted dislike on this.
If you forget that Amy's supposed to be from Manhattan and think of her as coming from a Welsh coal mining town, this interpretation isn't half bad. And it's damn funny too.
She goes from a British accent to bad attempt at Brooklynese to a drab ending in just the first verse. It is a mess. It's hard to believe that she got nominated for a Lawrence Olivier award for this role? To the Brits have any standard for good musical theater?
The soprano is great. It seems a nice production but I think that's because I know the characters. I can't imagine this enticing anyone who hasn't seen the show before.
I don't find that she overacted much more than the Bway revival Amy, whose performance got rave reviews but left me cold. But then again, I'm a shameless anglophile...
It's a surprise, I usually love Sophie T (she's great as Miss Bates in Emma), but she waaaaay overdoes it here, ruins all the punchlines. Madeleine Kahn had MUCH better comic timing in this part.
the accent is not the biggest problem here, I'm usually a fan of Donmar, Cabaret and Threepenny were brilliant there but this is just a butchered version of this song. Heather Laws still does the cleanest version if you ask me. This seems like a cheap cabaret performance, the character is contrived and the tenor of her voice doesn't exactly fit.
Everyone who has bitched about the accents in this production, which is an all British cast (why would the accents be flawless?). You guys have never taken the trouble to get the British accent right. Case in point: Sweeney Todd.. which you all think so fucking genius/hilarious btw...so stop whining and watch your own productions. Fran B Man I'd put serious money on it that your drama school production is not better than the Donmar production, just a hunch.
@tekato71, people that get into drama school actually have to be good. It's not like "collect 2 cereal boxes and go to drama school." Stop whining about the fact that no one agrees with you. And by the way, I am English.
Personally, I like her rendition. Her lack of precise melody gives the sense of her character falling apart, which she is during the song. I also love the way she uses her voice. It emphasizes the comedy of the song. Just because it doesn't sound pretty doesn't mean it's no good.
@jemjean I just saw your reply, and I want to emphasis that I was complimenting the use of her voice. I was actually stating the point that you are defending. That was the entire point of my comment.
@reflectionsX I'm sorry, but I can't even find my original post. I am sorry for the mix-up (whatever it was). But I'm happy that you agree with me. It's truly one of the best versions of this scene I've found.
This song does actually have a melody, and so few actresses seem aware of it, including Madeline Kahn (who was otherwise wonderful) and Carol Burnett (who was hilarious but not musical). If you watch the excerpts from the documentary of the studio sessions with the original cast, you'll see that Sondheim wanted the song sung, not talked.
But kudos to *anyone* who can pull off Amy even a little bit. If you're a singer and have seen this sheet music, you know how demanding it is.
Oh, come on, do you think every movie critic around has made a movie before? Do yoo think every book critic has written a book? We're aloud to express our opinions, regardless if we're "sufficiently experienced".
Not actually what I meant - feel free to express opinions, by all means that's what the business thrives on, but it's when people show uncalled disdain for, and presume to know BETTER than, the performers that I take issue, cause....they don't, basically.
well she certainly makes it her own. I'm not a fan of her take, but it certainly is a difficult song (even at that slower pace) and just getting through it (on stage whatsmore) without knotting your tongue is an achievement IMO
Agree with you on the disparaging comments - guys, say you don't appreciate her rendition, but words like "retard" and "she sucks" are simply rude.
Too bad, because she looks perfect for the role and her non-sung moments seem very promising. Never mind, she's still been astounding in everything else I've ever seen her in.
(some attempted hybrid of Nebraska and Brooklyn, in this case with some David Spade thrown in!) Emma actually comes much closer in Primary Colors and Adrian Lester does a flawless one in the same film. Also, I agree with previous commenter that she was so focused here on trying to get the words out that she couldn't act the song. The guy playing her husband to be is actually in character, but she's just fighting for her life.
I think Sophie Thompson is one of the best actors out there. Which makes it all the more disappointing to see this number. I bet/hope she was better in the acting portions of this production, but whoever decided (Mendes?) she should try for an American accent was deeply misguided. I've never seen her slip, but this was one of those AWFUL travesties of an American accent so many otherwise great British actors come up with
Oh my God... you have to check out Heather Laws doing this in the 2007 Broadway revival (it's on Youtube) !!! She has the speed (that manic freaked out intensity) and she is almost paralized by her fear. Her performance is comic genius. AND she sings it as it should be phrased; ONE BIG BREATH for each verse. It's a showstopper!!!
Personally i like it, i just think its important to recognise that she would have been directed to perform the character in this way - quit hating just on her!
does anyone have this actual song in just audio format? i really like it and i haven't been able to find it or download it. Someone reply to this comment if you have the actual song! thanks :)
no but it was shown on the BBC some years ago, I made a copy on DVD. Sondheim had quite a bit to do with this revival and added a small gay sub plot! It was a great production, and yes more about acting than voices.
wasn't that subplot added in to all productions of company after he revised it in the early 90's? Or am I mixed up, and it only came after this? I'm really not sure. :S
I really like this woman in Amy's part. Since Sondheim intended the character to be a neurotic, it makes sense that she's this worked up and making such a big deal over it. Madeline Kahn's version was funny because it was so dead-pan subtlety, but I think this one stays truer to the mental-breakdown this scene is for the character.
she does this a bit like joan cusak might do this. there are some funny moments in it, but to my taste, she's showing a bit too much personality. maybe because i'm used to it, i kind of prefer the catatonic versions of the song. it's great that the donmar version is available on youtube. i'm looking forward to viewing it now.

These Donmar "Company" excerpts are ballz. They seem to always be the worst versions of the songs available on YouTube. Are all of the characters supposed to be from Jersey or the Bronx? Looks and sounds wacky.
This has got to be one of the worst renditions of this song I've ever seen. What was with the British Music Hall interpretation? And the accent? Ditto and double for Madeline Kahn's brilliant performance at Carnegie Hall. I am so disappointed in this production.
she does a good job singing, but it isn't subtle at all. I have lots of problems with the acting. However, she deserves credit for performing this song.
i saw the company revival, and i think i prefer this song here to the one there. i understand that both were going in different directions, but this amy had a much more vibrant character, and she didn't do it in monotone like the other lady seemed to do, which made the song seem like it actually meant something. thats not to say the other version is horrible, i just prefer this one.

Love her! I can never listen to another rendition of this song ever again without imagining Sophie Thompson. AllanWo, can you possibly post the scene that follows the song with Bobby, Amy, and Paul?
I really don't like the clips I've seen from this production. I understand what they're trying to do by making it darker but for me it just strips all the entertainment from it and you spend the whole time feeling really uncomfortable.
Yeah, I agree, I really don't see what makes this "darker." Company is not a "dark" show in the sense people seem to be talking about. It's a very conceptual show, and dim lighting and black metal levels does not make it "dark."
And I'm sorry, Amy is supposed to be frantic at this point, yes, but she's at least supposed to talk like a normal human being. She's supposed to be singing very fast, and she's supposed to be frantic, but the way this woman is singing is just odd.
I agree with ljay889: Sophie's performance is a brilliant interpretation that would do Sondheim proud. The world doesn't need another Madeline Kahnish monotonal rendition.
She seems very incapable of saying the word "MARRIED", and is obviously not usually a singer (which seems to be the case of... everyone in this clip), and shouldn't have even attempted the accent. Though I do like her expressions.
Also let me say I think Sophie is brilliant here. Many people praise this performance because you really believe she has a serious mental problem. Other Amy's just come off a little crazy. But Sophie's Amy has a mental disorder, and it's very evident.
I am really not impressed by ths production at all, it seems very strange and the voices are really weak in a lot of places. I also REALLY don't understand Amy and April's character choices in particular, they both just seem a little....off.
eeek. this production seems inferior to many others (original broadway, recent revival, etc). I would expect much better from donmar. The tone of this scene is way off.
This is probably the best ever version i have ever seen or heard. Fabulous actors and sorry if their accents arn't tip top to some of you, but as an Englishman I rekon they had a pretty good crack at it! Also watch "Ladies who lunch" Ms. Gish is fantastic.

Yeah, she is supposed too. That is the character. Madeline captured it PERFECTLY

Love her! I can never listen to another rendition of this song ever again without imagining Sophie Thompson. AllanWo, can you possibly post the scene that follows the song with Bobby, Amy, and Paul?
Thanks so much!

The production was very different and much darker than any COMPANY before and ever since. I think it looks brilliant, because it's so different.

This was pretty funny. My only complaint is the bizarre new york-esque accents.
