Though these days the lion dance have changed a lot of playing styles, but without Fut Shan 佛山 initiative Lion dance, you would not see todays lion dance. Must keep the tradition and respect the old. Todays call it art, olden day it is symbolic of fortunate (祥).
Cool that you guys are keeping it alive. So are we. Our team is called LA Jin Yin. We are based in Los Angeles and we also practice the Traditional Lion Dancing. How long have you guys been practising?
Traditional Fut Shan lion head, Fut Shan drumming, and keeping up with traditions. I LOVE IT, much respect from me. Do you guys wear simple black martial art pants as well by anychance? For our school, we are completely old school all the way even though other groups make fun of us because they think we are poor and cant afford new looking lions and the full tail/pants kit.
Don't listen to what other people say. It is expected to hear that sort of thing because lion dancing is a very competitive sport. Pride is held very high by lion dancers and their teams.
Yes true having attractive lions and uniforms is ATTRACTIVE on a superficial level, but the real beauty of the art comes from the creativity, ability, skill, technique, and PRIDE of the lion dancers that make a great team and performance.
No,its not a fok hok lion, this is traditional futsan, fok hok is a mix of futsan and hok san,it's easy to tell from the horn and mouth, hok san has a mouth that is flat and sticks out a little like a duck bill and has a curved horn, futsan has a pointy horn and a curved mouth,a fok hok has a curved mouth but a horn like a hoksan.
Some of the comments made here are way too harsh, You did a great job drumming and I liked the music! The dancing was great too. I bet the guy in the back didn't get in the tail cause he wasn't trained and you couldn't find anyone else that could do the job. I know how hard it is to find, train and especially keep regular team members.
lol well I asked him to just hold it for me while I was practicing with the head. This is not a performance. But obviously you would not have someone just stand there with the tail, that is just stupid. I have seen people contemporary the more contemporary style just hold the tail too in parades lolol so we are even lol. I'm sure they were just tired and hot though in the burning sun.
hmm... I might. If I do, I will PM you the link. I may possibly make another account to avoid bias. I actually made this account specifically for this video so that I could get pure/harsh criticism from both random people and friends.
Yea, size 2 is standard for lion dancing. Usually size 1 is for big people or just people who appreciate large heads. The size 1 definitely weighs more by a significant amount you can feel but can be good for training. Size 2 is lighter which is better for acrobatic stuff and is less stress on someone's endurance.
yea this video was taken a long time ago. Since then my stance has gotten much stronger and I spent some time with a camera fixing my lions direction of sight and focus and it has definitely improved.
Thanks for the info and tips though from both you and Youtube's lion dance community. It's good to share constuctive criticism. =]
does anyone know where do they still manufacter or sell those cool looking old trditional Futsan lion heads??? I've been looking everywhere....and they only have the modern ones with the big furry material.
But if you are still looking for places that sell these nice old school lion heads... Try to look for a connection in China. Specifically in either Fut San, Canton, or in Hong Kong.
I have a a very nice one that was made in Fut San. Hong Kong style is cool because they still make it look contemporary while keeping the lions looking traditional. Canton and Fut San though are by far the most traditional in my opinion. I will message you if I get more info
what kind of drumming did you use? its very repetitive and not very expressive. its boring. also, it doesnt match to this style of liondancing. you must be peter ly, right?
dude, ur basics suck. besides, u got it from chau sifu from onleong, but u didnt know that. dotn use chow gar liondance moves with futsan beats. ur kick to the eye is awful. u re supposed to make its look like its scratching its eye.
yea i really need to work on that stretching to fix my eye kick. too bad the person who taught me is being an asshole lol but it's ok now that he knows i know and i know he knows =] .
yea i know...i realized all those things but i wanted to see if anyone else noticed first. It's kinda lazy looking due to the head looking down half the time and the mediocre stances to the trained eye ;) . Thanks for the input though. As far as the head snap, yea I'm working on it ^^.
Good stuff. I still consider myself a practitioner of older more traditional lion dance as well. If I may suggest some comments try and tilt the head more upwards because currently the lion is looking at the ground during the low dance. Snapping of the head can always be cleaner especially for the ending. And the usual martial arts thing to say "lower stances". Heh.

its normal during practises for students to help the head by holding the tail, then switching after a while with other students.
