I remember this LP. It was important because it reresented Miles' first incursion into the electric/funk dimension. At this point the fusion of jazz and rock was thought to be unholy by many jazz purists. I applaud MIles for being bold enough to folow his instincts and step out there. Long live the spirit of innovation...it's what makes improvisation what it is
This was the first Miles LP I ever bought. 1968. I loved it- although In a Silent Way is my favorite.
Eat you hearts out all you younger musicians. Better yet, learn instead--and forge ahead- realize music does not emanate from a computer. It can actually be played on instruments!
This tune is really awesome. It is delicate....and slightly funky. Those drums are great.....and that mellow rhodes...it's really nice sounding.
I think this album is so important as it was the start of things really moving over to electric - just at the start. Really dig the album cover as well. How exciting 1968 must have been.
@Keyboardman88: I believe I've read that as well. This was something of a transitionary album for Miles--pointing the way towards his electric period to come but only part way there
@aarfeld To be accurate, Miles asked Hancock and Carter to switch over to electricity on 2 songs that didn't appear before the 80s on disc : Circle In the Round and Water On The Pond (December 1967)
I know this is sayin' a lot,but this track has as much attitude as any ever recorded, before or since. In any era.In any genre. I'm just sayin'. In many ways, almost 20 years since his passing,Miles still rules!!
Yea Miles in '68 re-introducing that heavy black back beat to his abstract brothers..Awesome!! Never looked back from this..Onwards to the mystic beats of Argatha.
PerryCox you have inspired me to purchase all the CDs of Miles and the other fusion artists you have posted...thanks for introducing this side of the spectrum to me
@PerryCoxPF93 I think the problem is the label. It's just good music, the word fusion seems to lessen the effect for me. Ain't the j-word, f-word, the c-word, or the "let me appease a certain part of the market by giving them some cannon fodder to chomp their gums to their friends" kinda music. Just good music.
Why do i see it again. Now i have to listen again and again. This song f*ck me everytime.
ahh what the heck..

I may be mistaken, but I believe that this is the first time that Herbie Hancock used a Fender Rhodes electric piano on a recording.

One of the first recordings with a prolific role for the Fender Rhodes , Herbie playing it. A bit thinly intonated maybe.
