  • My german teacher said his name was Krampus

  • @BoyznGirlz09 There are different names for him in Germany. It depends on the area where you're living. Krampus would be his name in South- Germany, esp. Bavaria.

  • remember its not child abuse if you let the kid hit you back XD

  • Sanct Nickolaus was an Bishop in Greek i think, and he helped people so the church make him to an saint after he died and the legend was that at begin of the hard winter he came back as ghost at night and fill the shoes of poor kids with food.

    Knecht Ruprecht was invented later.

And actually the idea of Santa Klaus (USA), Fäterchen Frost (Russia) and the Wheinachtsmann was coming from Sanct Nickolaus.

  • I guess the main difference between the German Nikolaus and the American Santa Clause is that St. Nikolaus (Saint Nicholas) actually lived in the third and fourth century and was the bishop of Myra whereas Santa Clause is some crazy old guy living at the north pole riding flying reindeers. Yeah, right.

  • I think this thing with putting your socks or shoes in front of the chimney is a very americanized way to celebrate Nikolaus.

In my Family we still celebrate the tradition that Nikolaus and sometimes also Krampus (kind of his evil helper) actually comes to our house, reads something from his golden book and gives presents to us from his bag.

  • i get that hoiliday and im american thats cuz my dad was born in germany

  • @Cheeses89

    Of course there is o_O

  • haha u guys look cute with those hats :P

  • knecht ruprecht's nothing...google "krampus"...that's the austrian version of knecht ruprecht...we even have an own "krampus-tag" on december 5th...

  • Knecht Ruprecht? you said that beating of kids is illegal in GER ;)

  • Knecht Ruprecht is just lame. In austria the counterpart of nikolaus is called krampus. He looks like a demon with a birch rod and normaly there is group of them going through the streets. Teenagers try to anoy and touch them and not to get whipped wich really hurts, as a test of bravery. The Perchten- or Krampuslauf is a lot of fun and a real spectacel.

  • GERMANY!!!!!!!!!!!! xD

  • What he is talking about is the original santa claus..Santa claus is the american version of sint nikolas and his feast day was dec. 6. In some countries all the traditions were merged into christmas

  • hüh oO wir tun es immer vor der Tür :D

  • Knecht Ruprecht is actually also the name of the Simpson's dog in Germany

  • @chiller1707

yep and in the us the dog is called Santas little Helper ;-p soo the german version of simpsons messed up that name couse santas little helper ist more like some green elf stuff i guess ;-p not knecht rubrecht..

  • in Belgium and Holland the kids get all the present on December the 6th

  • @krux02 in Poland on 6th and 24th evening

  • Oo, we put our shoes in front of the house!

  • oh please PLEASE can you make a video on Halloween? The similarities and differences! That would be cool

  • jeaah! @ SpunkyBL0ndeBoy ! It is this!! good idea!

    at that mark, greetings from:

    Schwarzwald, Germany :)

  • We dont really have a halloween tradition in Germany !

Since a few years it spills over into Germany but its more like a copy of american halloween.

  • @AxA0101 thats not really true... i guess it belongs to the state you live in germany. in bavaria, were germans more celebrate the german fests like the oktoberfest (not really popular in other parts, like the ruhrgebiet) its not so popular indeed. As far as Iam knowing halloween is some kind of growing since the end of the 80s. The only truth is, that its not much different to the american halloween, but if may its interesting for foreign people.

  • actually many younger germans celebrate halloween, because weve got a day free at the first november. even the kids are doing trick or treat... you can use google and search for a german theme park called Movie Park. Its doin halloween fests every year ... in my opinion its pretty cool. also many re doing halloween partys on their own just search for wicked hospital in youtube... its a party some friends did. In germany trick or treat is "Süßes sonst gibts saures" A video would be worth it.

  • @SpunkyBl0ndeBoy

there is no halloween in germany

  • you forgot to say Sankt Nikolaus lives once in turkey he helped the poor people. so he's holy. there are a lot more storys about him but i don't know them. look at wikipedia or other dictionarys.

  • thats funny in latin america and spain we have a holiday on jan 6 and its called "el dia de los tres reyes magos" or (the three wise men day) where you place ur shoes on the window (cuz there arent any chimneys in spain or latinamerica cuz is so damn hot) and then if u were a good boy the three kings would place candies in ur shoes or small toys

  • hilarious lol. if you dont act right a guy beats you with a root lol. I know in america they tell us saint nick (santa clause) will put coal in ur stocking if uve been bad, and if he catches you awake he will spit soot in your eyes. Just a little something our parents tell us so well goto sleep lol.

  • Can't wait about your story when the Christchild is coming on holy evening ;o)

PS: Found your video as recommendation by DeliriumReal

  • Many American catholic children aslo put their shoes out in front of the fire place during the Christmas season. I remember doing this when I was young.

  • @domoarigato7

    i´ve never heard of it...

i think it is not true

  • what s the difference between Knecht Rubrecht and the Krumpus

  • in southern germany they call him "krampus" and in northern germany he is known as "knecht ruprecht"

  • My german teacher in high school said that Knecht Rubrecht was such a frightening person to some little children that in some elementary schools in Germany the teachers were not allowed to talk about him. Alex (or anyone that lives in Germany) do you know if this is true?

  • Well, I remember, that on bigger events, when there was one person dressed up as Nikolaus and one as Knecht Ruprecht, all the kids were afraid of the Knecht. I know I was ^^

  • Ach so, vielen dank.

  • nichts zu danken ;)

  • I am born in 1975 and the only thing I can remember about Ruprecht were only the stories my parents told me "be nice to get a gift of Santa ... otherwise Ruprecht is coming" .... in the school we had nothing about Ruprecht.

  • knecht ruprecht is an invention from the church in the 16. century to get people to be more religious...

  • we would always put our shoes out the front door and they'll be filled with goodies the next day ^^

  • Saint Nikolaus comes from Turkey. Did you know that???

He was a Greek Bishop who gave gifts and food to the poor children.

  • was drink ihr den????? Gluhwein??

  • Thanks for this video guys!I like this tradition. 5 star & featured!

  • hitting kids..always fun

  • @ralfonzo83 You are right xDDD

Its seems brutal but knecht ruprecht is just a symbol. I dont know a kid who was hitting by him xD

LOL...

great job guys... totally love your vibe... what are you drinking btw...!! (off to see the coca cola truck...in our little town here that is something special)

    °Sara°

  • ok so hab noch ein paar links gesetzt.. war etwas müd gestern nacht... have fun guys... and she cried "MORE; MORE;MORE"!!!! luvya!!!!

  • haha knecht is so ein geiles wort

  • i would beat the knecht first before he is able to hit me...

  • straight up.

  • I was taught Knecht Ruprecht was called Krampus? And doesn't he also kidnap children as well as beat them? lol

  • krampus (or kramperl) is the bavarian and austrian version. their appearance is usually far more frightening than that lame ruprecht guy :D

and they REALLY hit people with they're roods and whips, which can be pretty painful, especially when some drunken asshole's hidding in the costume...

  • "hit people with they're roods and whips"

    oops. should be "their"...

  • I once got beaten by the Krampus :/ (that's how Knecht Rupprecht is called here in Bavaria)

  • MAGGIE

  • i was just talking about that with a friend today and he said the 'presents' you get here in your shoes like candy and stuff is kinda like what you have there in the stockings on the chimney

  • Sagt mir jetzt nix..

    LG

  • The bad kids in America go to the land of Misfit Toys.

  • pffft. i wish.

  • haha, they both look stunning :)

  • If you mess the poem up, you get beaten with the rute.

    LOL

  • well usually not :D :D :D

  • he beats the bad kids? That´s awsome :D

  • You're so mean! xD

  • thanks for the video :) but jim...where did you grow up? do people really not celebrate this in the south? i have grown up celebrating "saint nick's" as we call it since preschool, and i live in ohio..same tradition exactly. candy/treats in the shoes.

  • I live in Ohio too, though I've never heard of anyone even knowing what "Nikolaus" is..that's interesting :)

    love your username btw ;D

  • haha, thanks ^.^ but seriously? have you never heard of the tradition before? i actually didnt know that it was "nikolaus", but nik, nick, same difference

  • your very welcome =)) and well, I lived in Germany, so I knew it from there, but once I moved here like no one knew about it =/ Haha, yeah, no biggie ^^

  • Does Alex know about the different x-mas traditions in Germany? Because there is the Weihnachtsman in some places and the Christkind in others.

  • Comment removed

  • Ne, das stimmt so nicht. Beide sind am gleichen Tag (24. Dezember). 6.

  • I used to do something like that in primary school in Pennsylvania. We used to leave our shoes outside the classroom and by the end of the day we would have candy and pencils.

  • didnt a lot of germans move to pennsylvania? maybe thats just a tradition that they've brought with em

  • I have forget my shoe to clean

    i got nothing

  • great!

    like everytime =)

  • Ah, the good old St. Nikolaus video.

Oh, and don't forget about Pelzmärtel in Frankonia on november 11th.

  • Nice cups :D

  • Nice Video :D
