  • "I saw-with shut eyes, but acute mental vision-I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life and stir with an uneasy, half-vital motion. Frightful must it be, for supremely frightful would be the effect of any human endeavor to mock the stupendous mechanism of the Creator of the world."

    -Mary Shelley

  • that creature just killed Helena how dare you hideous filthy creature killed the beatiful Elizabeth :C

  • Branagh directed it. Coppola produced it. Shelley wrote it. Full title : Mary shelleys francis ford coppolas Kenneth branaghs Frankenstein. Phew :)

  • Has anyone read the old version of 'Frankenstein' by "Mary Shelley" as I need help with understanding it? Cheers.

  • does any one know anything about a tv darama or a two day tv serires about this movies the frank was not de niro tho ?? anyone ??

  • Favorite DeNiro line in this movie:"Do you wanna piece of me?"

  • Can i ask a question?in imdb director sayskenneth branagh.....not coppola

  • Wait, Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Godfather Trilogy, directed this movie? I wasn't aware of that.

  • @killer92173 he didnt direct it.

  • @Fantomas612 Oh yeah, he produced it.

  • My class watched this because we read the book for summer reading....the excessively long naked Robert di Niro and shirtless Kenneth Branagh rolling around in which I believe was amniotic fluid was......really odd.... And then end, where the movie violently spun off from the book into a very strange and creepy scene. Still it was pretty good despite minor digressions and the one major one at the end. I enjoyed it.

  • the 1931 film is terrible!!!

  • @narutofan9tf how can you say the 1931 frankenstein is bad? it is awesome, bride of frankenstein is even better

  • @LizTheFreakiKid Yes, it is her! She's wonderful in Frankenstein, as always :D

  • this is the best frankenstein film i have ever seen it was really great and it follows the book closely from what i have heard i havent read the book yet though but i really want too since its an english book and not american

  • @25Mike25Mike25 In the book the monster is never given a name, he is just referred to as "the monster".

  • he pulls out elizabeths beating heart and shows it to Frankenstein Lolz, this movie was lulz.

  • @Blazing234 you cant even spell a word that dosent even exist

  • This film is the closest adaption to the book so far. I really like it. If they make a remake of Frankenstein to go with The Wolfman remake, it should remain faithful to the book and not the 1931 film. I mean they should have references to the others films in little moments in the film, but it needs to be faithful to the novel. They should try to make it more frightening to.

  • what's the song in the background?

  • @TWICEfan3125 Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem.

  • @BellaPrincipessaRosa Thank you!

  • helena bonham carter is in literally every movie

  • @MeTsRoCkMySoCk13 I'm glad she's not, otherwise I'd spend a lot more money that I can afford on films X3 She's wonderful!

  • Frankenstein is the creator of the monster

  • its amazing that mary shelley thought of the idea of frankenstein when she was 17 or 18.

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • This is the worst film I've ever seen in my life. Kenneth Branagh wants tying to a tree and flogging for his acting in this comedy. I got the film on video just after it came out and I actually burned the video.

  • @mockerlancs Oh come on. What was so bad about it? I thought it was a pretty good adaptation of the book. I me, I thought it was weird when Frankenstein went topless when he brought the creature to life, but it wasn't that bad.

  • AHAHAHAHAHAHA RATED 'R'! HAHAHAHAA

  • Great original novel that gets a faithful adaptation for the big screen.

  • can someone please upload the deleted scenes of this excellent film?

  • The novel by Mary Shelley was brilliant. Highly doubt the film is as good.

  • The novel by Mary Shelley was brilliant. Highly doubt the film is as good.

  • This movie had a ridiculously fast pacing.

    Frankenstein: 'It's alive!'

Monster: 'Yes and I'm pissed off. I'll kill you and get revenge!'

    Frankenstein: 'Revenge? For what?'

Monster: 'I don't know but this movie needs a plotline!"

Frankenfurter: 'So aren't you gonna kill me?'

Monster: 'No. Now I want to change the plotline entirely by having you create me a wife!'

Frankenstein: 'This isn't Bride of Frankenstein!'

Monster: 'You made me one in the original story!'

    Frankenstein: 'Well alright'

  • when was ophelia in frankenstein?

  • @Quarker99 The same time Hamlet was :D

  • I whatched the hole movie and I can say that it's better than Titanic!!!!

  • i heard de niro didnt need any make up

  • @twizy123 FACT!!!!!!!

  • Although it wouldn't be fair to say that this horror is entirely absent, you could miss it if you blink.

  • Another great variation of Frankenstein and his legendary Creature. Kenneth Branagh directed this film plus he was the leading actor here - perfect job in both departments. Robert De Niro was brilliant as The Creature. Every single scene was very well done. It was nice to see Ian Holm too - loved his work in 'Alien' and 'The Fifth Element'

  • I admit it took awhile for me to accept the Universal Frankenstein movies when I was reading the book in high school. It annoyed me how far they strayed from the book. They did get me into classic horror and then classic films though and now despite not being great adaptations persay, I look very highly on them. I like this alot too. It still takes liberties and I don't think Deniro was top-notch as The Monster, but it definately tried more than any other studios (major studios anyway) did.

  • Excellent movie.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • i want to read the book but i only have the unabrdged version that i cant read worth crap

  • simply a great movie!

  • does the movie really match mary shelley's original novel (frankenstein-the modern prometheus)?can someone tell me please. i have to read it for my english class, but i would understand it much more if i saw the movie...

  • @6banana9

No read the book first, then watch the movie, it isn't very long and is far better.

  • @wizardofboogieland You ae so right about that. I read the book and was very surprised at how obvious that the doctor was the real monster in the book who only cared out himself and his ego and was willing to sacrifice evrything including his family for his experiments.

  • @6banana9 Read the book is a masterpiece of English literature. The film is a very free adaptation..... Watch the film after you've read the book and you can compare.

  • A 'masterpiece' that hasn't aged well at all. The 1931 film and its surrounding lore is what most people now know as the story of Frankenstein and rightly so. The book raises distracting questions that would become an issue on film. Also, the moral of the book does not hold up in this day and age. Only in the days when people died of ptomaine poisoning and blamed it on ghosts was it wrong to attempt what Frankenstein did. Today it would be a breakthrough that would save millions of lives.

  • What's the song name?

  • @Lelem2 Missa Da Requiem, Dies Irae by Verdi

  • @Lelem2 the "song" is the Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem.

  • Helena <3

  • can someone please upload the deleted scenes?

  • Poor thing :( sad movie. People think looks mean everything

  • Frances ford coppla is a genius

  • This story is about two twisted minds, Victor Frankenstein who is very obsessed about creating an immortal being upon his mother's death. The being, isolation of man has made him cynical and revengeful.

The plot is very complicated, the being renown Victor as his "father" yet hated him. Victor is remorse and compassionate toward the being.

The story ends with Victor's death and being's suicide. It is a sad story about overambitious and karma. This is the closest movie that follows the novel.

  • Very good film, having a hard time finding it in store.

  • De Niro and Copplola at their best:)

  • mabye both for the creature and the doctor

  • i8 watched this movie on encore mystery just yesterday it's really close to the book and was a creepy and excellent movie.

  • i love carter for taking the brvery of looking that hiddeous at the end, yet shes beautiful in reality

  • @kburnout Me too, though really I don't think she considers herself to be beautiful (though of course she is), and she often says how she loves not looking like herself, so I imagine she enjoyed it.

  • Wow! Coppola did the Movie dracula with bram stokers name on it and now Mary shelley's frankenstein. That is AWESOME.

  • @ThePizzadude93 Kenneth Branagh directed this movie not Coppola, he just Produced. Dracula was a much better made movie.

  • the creature is called victor's creation.....he has no name

  • this is rated R? we are watching this in my english class. lol

  • That was Frankenstein looks like.

  • Mary Shelly is the athor of the book

  • This movie is a real masterpiece,

  • @CorneredWord a master piece of shite

  • frankenstein it's good for a book, but good movie too:D

  • R rated? wow nice

dont u think Frankenstein is portrayed more feminine than other characters in the book?

  • If avgn saw this, fred fuchs is in the credits of this trailer!!! lol

  • @rorschach281 OMG IS FRED FUCHS !

    ROFL DUDE !

  • Saw this movie today, pretty good.

  • must be a great woman to love such an ugly man, haha

  • why does he bring elizabeth back to life?????

  • @efren3391, to satisfy the Creature's request for a companion. The Creature kills Elizabeth because Frankenstein ignores his request, and The Creature makes good on his threat that "If you deny me my wedding night, I will be with you on yours" (a line from the novel).

  • this version is a lot closer to the novel than the Karloff version (or any other adaptation, for that matter). Kenneth Branagh did a spectacular job with this movie. Like its predecessor, "Bram Stoker's Dracula," this film is very faithful to the source material (PLEASE DO NOT contest my opinion).

  • which verison is this movie?

  • The Frankenstein in this movie is actually closer to the description Mary Shelley gave it in the book...Elizabeth looks like Chucky when shes brought back to life lol

  • Frankenstein is the name of THE DOCTOR, NOT THE CREATURE.

  • Oh yeah..My bad

  • The name of the actual "creature" was Jimmy T. Bates. It says so in chapter 7 of the book.

  • are you fucking crazy?

  • @ShakespeareHamlet

Yes, but that's irrelevant here. The monster, or rather "Mr. Bates" is addressed throughout the 2nd half of the story by his first name "Jimmy".

It's also interesting to know that prior to the book's first publication, Mary Shelly actually had the monster coined as "Terry Morgan", but she changed it because she thought Terry sounded too androgynous.

You can google all of this.

  • interesting, but good thing Mrs. Shelley decided NOT to name The Creature.

  • @ShakespeareHamlet

It's all true. The bride of Frankenstein also was given a name. She was called "Isabel Knox". At one point of the film when Jimmy meets her, if you pause it, you can faintly see a heart scrawled on the wall behind them. Inside the heart it says: "Jimmy loves Isabel". It wasn't in the original script, but it's rumored that Boris Karloff himself wrote it on the wall for a joke and it was left in because everyone thought it was funny.

  • @JohnQRandom

I think their is 2 books accoriding to my frieind, a long and short version. I'm reading the book and I dont see where it says Jimmy T Bates who gave him that name?

  • The creature's name is revealed in the same chapter when Dr. Frankenstein is appying the creature's penis (refered to in the book as: "the golden limb"). Another interesting little detail is that Marry Shelley wanted to mention somewhere in the book how big the creature's dick was. The problem was getting a publisher who would be willing to publish the story with that detail. Ultimately, the creature's peinis size (a foot long) was edited out of the story before the first publication.

  • @JohnQRandom

I doubt you've even read the book.

I have, and I'm doing an assignment.

I've read it back to front.

    Just no

  • Yes, but I doubt you've read the "limited edition" first publication. Only 916 copies were ever printed. They are considered the Guternberg Bibles of science fiction novels. Only a few private collectors and rare book stores in the US have copies. Ask your nearest book dealer about it. Just mention "Frankenstein's penis edition" to the and they should know what you're talking about. (Then get back to me and tell me what they said).

  • PS, you mentioned you've read the book "back to front". Did you really read that entire book backwards?

  • @JohnQRandom

I dont get why your so obsessed with the idea of frankenstein's penis?

You really need to get a life.

your probably 30, on the doll and watch videos on youtube all day. Oh, and reply to people who point out your stupidity and you try to defend your self.

    Get a life.

    Read some books.

  • @pinkpinkpink30

I am also obsessed with the Bride of Frankenstein's clammy vagina. Have you ever read Marry Shelley's "Big Titty" series??

  • @ShakespeareHamlet

Well his last name is Frankenstein the "Doctor" name is Victor.

  • @zuleyma4, that's Victor's last name. The Creature does not have a name.

  • seriously

  • @ShakespeareHamlet for real

  • @ShakespeareHamlet the creature is his ersatz son. ergo: frankenstein.

  • @ShakespeareHamlet indeed but they have given him the name because he truly does not posses any name, thats why he should just be called, "Frankestein`s monster"

  • @ShakespeareHamlet i know but in the movie the monster named himself Frankenstein too

  • @ShakespeareHamlet yes one of the most common misinterpretations :\ liked the book more tho

  • most accurate to the book. we're watching in my brit. literature class while reading the novel and they are both incredible.

  • Elizabeth, say my name....this movie is one of the best!!!

  • what is name of the music in the background.

  • Terrible movie, except for Tom Hulce's understated performance. When the electric eels swam down to energize the "Monster" I laughed out loud at the shear ridiculousness of the idea!

  • I'm half way on this movie. Shelley didn't tell how the monster came to life. On one hand, that's good because then you don't have to justify it - i.e. you don't get eels. On the other hand, it sucks because it leaves you unsatisfied.

  • I saw a french film made in the 50 that was the closes to the book

  • this is the son of grunt 68-69 . "Sucked"

  • indeed, helena bonham carter IS awesome.

  • The story was never about a quest for immortality. The story of Frankenstein was commentary on Victorian England and modernity.

  • Careful about confusing plot with themes.

  • There is no mistaking the fact that the plot of the movie does not match that of Shelley's novel.

  • Comment removed

  • helena bonham carter is awesome!

  • i saw this movie i liked it

  • We watched it. This ones the nearest to the novel, and we didn't have time to read the book, were pressured for time.

  • I finished reading the book today!

  • have no idea what you just said.

  • @sterm01, dumbass.

  • Actually if a book doesn't sell well IT DOES MATTER

  • Although I don't quite understand what you said, I give my views on the matter. I read the book - loved it. Way different from the Karloff movie. This movie is the closest adaptation I have seen of the book, but yet changes a few scenes.

If I understand what you are saying, I agree that the book was better.

The movie is good, don't get me wrong, but some books just don't fare well in the movie industry without change. In terms of the movies, I prefer the Karloff one. And I love the book

  • i love this movie! And the book of course

  • Actually, this film was the closest I've ever seen to the book. The 1931 movie was fabulous, but it hardly stayed faithful to the book at all. Honestly, I didn't like Robert DeNiro as the creature, though.

  • i love this film. this movie is why i love helena bonham carter! shes hot in this!

  • why is it that everyone watches it in english class?. i read the book and it was great so when i found out there was a movie i watched it and i have to say you couldnt believe how far from the book it was although it wasnt bad.... ooh btw rotfl about the naked men

  • watched it in english today... funnieest shit ever, that bit where he's like rolling around in the slime with the other man, naked, hahahaha

  • just finshed watching it in my english class

  • haha lol i watched in my world lit class!

  • Amazing film. So overthetop, it makes it such fun to watch.

  • Medicine isn't what it used to be

  • Not many people know that this movie was more like the book than any other Frankenstein adaptation.

  • ...The book came out in 1818... That's 113 years BEFORE the 1931 movie!!!!!!!!!!

  • glad you did the math cause i probley couldnt do math myself... stupid

  • Thankyou Francis Ford Coppola :D

Finally know the name of the guy who made these two brilliant remakes!

  • i watched this in my english class, since i'm not used to horror films this scared the hell out of me! its good just kind of traumatic... -.-'

  • OMG, me too...but actually i found it sad in some scenes,I actually thought thatI was going to tear up

  • i gotta watch this shit in my english class on tuesday lol

  • haha I just finished watching it in my english class! took us like 3 classes to watch it all

  • EvilDeadFan, I just listened to Branagh read (abridged version); loved it. I read the full version twice now; it's that good. I think this follows the book to some degree, better than other versions, still has some decrepancies. Best one out there; acting's superb. Afterall, it's a horror film; that's the point; director made it 'his' art; that is what movie making is all about; freedom. I think Branagh did a fine job and he deserves an huge applause for this film. The ending is stupendous.

  • amazing

  • I own it and watch it all the time. I love the film. I do have some qualms with the parts that deviated. I adore the book and have read it 2 times and now listening to Ken Branagh's fine narration of the Abridged book on CD. That too is just great. I don't know why this boomed. I lent it to a friend and he hated it also. He didn't get it at all. I 'got it' because I read the novel; a masterpiece of literature! Highly recommend both - novel and this film version.

  • Definitely, I read an abridged version of this and Dracula when i=I was little and got it perfectly. I've seen the Coppola Dracula and can't wait to see this. It just goes to show hom much reading can be fun and help.

  • I watched this film in english at school and LOVED it! It's not really gory but it still managed to have half my class going "eurgghhh" and turning away. A film you have to see before you die! 5 stars!

  • the film is well done even without to much gore. I love Robert de niros Version of Frankensteins munster.

  • by this time after making brams stoker's dracula , coppala wanted to do franky next , so which is best coppala's dracula or coppala's frankensein?

  • I'm pretty sure Coppola directed Dracula and Branagh directed Frankenstein- Coppola's name is in the credits as a producer on Frankenstein and it is referred to as a "Branagh film". You can also spot the different styles in directing. While both are superior films, I would say Dracula wins because it just has soo many good things going for it, including amazing sound editing and the fact that its eroticism was so compelling.

  • Dracula is great - a fairy tale, based on "Beauty and the Beast". The sets, the costumes, the soundtrack - it is a masterpiece. Frankenstein made me feel ill. It was disgusting. I never want to watch this movie again.

  • Why did it make you feel ill? Was it the violence, the thematic content itself, or could you not decipher the thematic content? Personally, I really like the sort of games that Frankenstein plays with our comfort zones(even though the story is quite dated).

  • I did not like the whole atmosphere, the colours, the sets and costumes: Everything seemed to be insane. And then the scene, where the mob kills that girl - although I have watched it years before, I still remember it in detail. Or the scene with the heart and Bonham Carter's look before she burns herself. That was too much for me. Everything was so mean and cruel. Never again!!!! Same feelings I have had by watching "Silence of the lambs".

  • The monster in this movie looks like Uncle Fester.

  • i havent seen it yet but i want to. i just want to know from others opinions, is it worth watching?

  • oh hell yes!!!its amazingly done.the actors are amazing, its beautifully done.its romantic and scarey and keeps you on the edge of your seet the whole time,i lovett!you should go rent it like RIGHT now!!!:D

  • The part of the monster is played by Robert d'Nero, Nathan Lane, Sylvester Stalone and a bit of Jim Carry at the same time.

I know it's a horrible joke but I love it

  • This follows the book better than Karloff's (I mean no disrespectm I love that movie)

But it doesn't follow it perfectly, the biggest diffrence is the Bride. In the book she never came to life, and the Bride was not Dr. Frankenstien's wife. It's a good movie, but it's sad.

  • the movie is really good but its so gory and bloody compared to the other old versions

  • So it should be!... It's realistic and cutting up bodies is not the job which involved cute bunnies ( unless your going to cut them up ^_^ ) .

  • "Gory and bloody" my ass. there were only 2 or 3 scenes which had any blood and only one which makes the viewer cringe (it's a crucial scene, so I won't give it away).

  • "So gory and bloody," my arse. This film version of the Gothic tale penned in 1818 is very faithful to the book and only has, like, 2 to 3 scenes with blood, only the last of which is cringe-inducing. Branagh was very faithful to the novel and (SPOILER ALET!!!)the plot twist served to make Mrs. Shelley's point: DO NOT PLAY GOD. So why this movie was a flop is beyond me.
