Any cat can trill. It's not designated to one specific breed. Almost all of my cats have done it, and they've varied in breeds. I think it's an expression of happiness, or maybe questioning. When my male does it, he's usually in...'that mood', and I think he's asking, "Where's my date for the evening?". LOL. Cats are so mysterious, we'll never completely figure them out.
Is your cat part maine coon, ragdoll, siberian or bengal by any chance? Cuz they're supposed to be the only ones that trill but I have a rescued stray tabby that makes the exact same noise. Really cute kitty btw :)
Lorre was rescued from a parking lot...on a Friday the 13th! She's got some brindle markings (some say more like a tortie) so the little spook is a mix of some kind. She hasn't done the trilling since her kitten days. Why that is, she won't say.
My cat makes that noise for everything! I'm like what does it mean!!! He does it when he wants to be let out of a room, when he walks up to you, heck even when he's being yelled at. :S lol
@Superhappeefun MINE TOO. He does that when he sees me, when he is calling for my attention, when he jumps up on my lap or in bed with me, when I call his name, when he's excited, when he's startled, when he's scared, when he's annoyed... Sometimes it sounds really funny too.

I didn't know "trill" was the name for this sound my cat makes. I was like, why does my cat NOT meow? What is this sound? What does it mean???
:) Thank Heaven for the Internet or I would not have been able to research these very important questions.
