Haha, I tried that thing with the crystal but with a cigarette lighter instead, and I could'nt lift my ashtray! I thing it works partly because of leverage, if I keep my hand flat I can't get the muscle into a position were it works, or something like that. And focusing on the lighter/crystal will make it psychologically harder to lift the tray/mug, since it's hard to focus on two things at the same time.
