I was born in 69 and had I think the 71 model. One of my favorite childhood toys. I loved the record colors I recall and played it all the time. I was just telling my wife about this yesterday and here it is on YT :)
I still have one of these in good condition / perfect working order with all the records - even though i threw it's records about the garden like frisbies, picked it up by the yellow playing arm and threw it across the room, and wound the mechanism with all my strength. It was still good to go for my nephew and niece over the past decade, but truly remarkable for a toy to survive *me* in the 1970s
Wow I remember having this in my bedroom as a kid, but I eventually took it apart because I was curious about what it looked like inside and how it worked. Back then I often wrecked toys I owned that talked or made sounds by doing that! My poor parents had to hide all the screwdrivers but I found a butter knife worked almost as well. :)
@spongebob040, should have kept it, childhood memories!, i am looking for this for a long time, i still have the red and blue ball with yellow shapes, and the arrow pointer see and say toy and the fisher price airport. i still have it!
This toy was a form of digital player in which the tone arm carries the tuned blades tnat play the melody. My only question is this: "Why the music box manufacturers recorded in those device soo very sad melodies (for me). "Twinkle, twinkle litle star" was an exception.
I love it ... not even sure I'd call it a toy, its a musical instrument!!
just dug mine back out and unfortunately its playing slowly ... could be dust, but suspect that after 34 years the spring has lived its useful life :(. Will definitely replace it if so.
Were more pieces of music available? loved the disks and the way they are double sided, love the colours. Still as valid today as ever.
I LOVED THIS! The Vermont Country Store carries all discontinued Fisher Price toys from the 60's and 70's. Check out their actual store in Vermont or go online to their website. Amazingly cheap prices!
I had very fisher-price music box.. the record player. the tv, the pocket "radio' and clock. I think we gave them to our little cousins when they were small.. now I think my nieces have them now.
i had this, the piano, and another 2 or 3 times its size, and a few others. my friend from preschool (don't remember the name) had the vacume cleaner, and a fire truck. you just made me nostalgia all over myself. i don't remember what company it was, (this or playskool,) but my preschool teacher had a cool sorting toy that played 4-5 songs when you sort the shapes in the right places. damn! now i feel 4 all over! now, where are my little pajama pants with the footsies?
These units work very well as DJ units. I slam out the mixes with two of these at the club. The metallic pinging gets everyone on their feet. No one can stop us from jamming "London Bridge" Good stuff.
My niece had one of those when she was little, it had six records I think, I remember that, Clair De Lune, One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other, and one that the girl from The Bad Seed was playing when she set the man on fire.
I had one of these when I like was 3 or 4 and when I turned 12 I found it my Grandmother's basement so I donated to the hospital in Red Deer, Alberta.
Its been a long time since I've seen this toy! LOL, recently I've been looking for old toys like this and I can't seem to track down one certain toy train that used records like these to play. It wasn't the Tomy melody or the Thomas the tank engine one, I just can't remember the name. I just remember that you had to place the records in the back of the engine.
I couldn't listen to this. I remember being little and we would go to visit my great-grandma in the summer and my sisters would always play with this. I however found it to be very annoying and couldn't be in the same room with it. It was more of me plugging my ears whenever I heard the music.
@yayyayyay09 I had one when I was a kid. I wanted to see if I could speed it up by pushing on it and well, it broke something inside and didn't work after that. So yeah, DJing it does not work.
@Elmware I did that a lot with mine too - occasionally the 'plinkers' got misaligned but it somehow survived me and i still have it in perfect working order to this day. Also the records made good frisbies.
My mom told me that when I was only 5 moths old, she was bringing me into sleep with this songs : Au clair de la lune;
twinkle twinkle little star, London bridge, oh where has my little dog gone, humpty dumpty, jack and jill, children's marching song andcaomtown races.
I still have mine in the basement at my mom's house in perfect working condition. I play with it whenever I go home and pull out all the Fisher Price Little People and their camper set. Might be time for another trip home :)
I LOVED it...my cousins had one, but I never had one. I ended up getting a close'n play!!!! :-) But, I'd still like to have had one of those...and I'm about to be 43!
Raitives of mine had something like this, except the one they had was a merry go round, which you had to hand crank to keep it going, I loved it when I was 6 years old, I wonder if they still have it.

I had one of these. I think it was a hand-me-down from my older brother. It never worked as far as I can remember. It was all busted and no records. But a friend of mine recently called me over to her parents' house and said they were clearing out the attic and that there was some stuff I might be interested in. Sure enough, there was one of these in beautiful condition with all the disks...and it was going to the curb! It now sits on display next to my real turntable.
I think you mean "My husband and I remember those", not "I and My Husband remember those"... because that's pretty poor and incorrect grammer to use by saying that, in case you've forgotten.
@finnishminnow The word 'grammar' is not spelt with an 'er', you have also used speech marks incorrectly instead of quotation marks. If you're going to critique others, then it might pay to proofread your comments.
Oh, I SEE! BTW... I (all unbeknownst) mistakenly messed up on spelling 'Grammar' by putting 'er' when I meant to put 'ar' in that word.
Plus... what I said while telling and reminding 'ryhthth' had a simpler meaning BECAUSE... due to the mistake she made by saying "I and my husband remember those" instead of "My husband and I remember those", had actually meant the fact of which it's not proper to say "I and My Husband" or stuff like that in sentences (for the following reasons).
