  • Emily, you are a sound that can make me happy when I just want everything to end. I honestly think that you are an amazing artist and you have brought a lot of amazing experiences into my life.

With that out of the way, and acknowledging that we all know you don't WANT to be a poster pop idol, can we all just admit that you're gorgeous and move on with it? lol

When I say that I can separate it from your art. Obviously the fact that you're a brilliant artist makes you that much more beautiful.

  • How did I end up here after watching UFO videos??? And who's Emily Haines???

  • You*

  • Fucking greedy bastards. YOU'RE DESTROYING MUSIC GOSH DARNIT. That is all. Emily Haines Young fuckin rule. You are a sound of awesome and you make my ears orgasm. ..That's completely normal.

  • its such a shame how the music biz works, all they seem to do is take it, abuse it,sqeeze it until theres nothing left, then throw it away like if it was a banna peel, and go to the next thing thats in the in crowd.

  • Just be thankful your look is good enough to get your sound noticed. Sorry, but we are talking about the music biz.

  • i am so in love with Emily

  • @scarffy1970 Bitch, she's mine.

  • @almondcoconuts lmfao@u

  • She must be a journalist's dream, she always gives such unusual and honest answers, it's refreshing to see.

  • I LOVE HER VOICE

  • dude... her voice.. just sounds like a song

  • Did you know her sister is a reporter on Citytv!!???

  • By 'sound' did she mean sonic recognition? You know, when a song plays on the radio and on its first bars you know who the artist is?

  • I want to eat out her voice.

  • I love Emily and Metric for their unique sound. I hate how everything mainstream is more about the music video and the artist than the actual music. Not everything has to be this over simplified processed cheese. Emily is a true artist not just some wannabe-performer-shock-pop-dope-me-up-and-show-my-sex-tape-already like the majority of women in the music industry these days.

  • she wasnt selling out. She was interested and wanted to collaborate with Howard Shore. Just sayin'

  • GOD I LOVE HER!!

  • isn't there another part to this interview? i could have sworn she did a beautiful buffalo springfield cover

  • Respond to this video... if i was blind her phonetics alone would ease my situation with or without music

  • i will marry her

  • i really like her

  • i hate you all. to say all guys zoom in on her sexy parts and wont be able to remember her as a sound is dumb. i saw her at coachella in 2008 she wore silver booty shorts and all and i cant stop thinking how she is one of my favorite artists, and i love her respect for it all, and how she keeps it so personal. i compare her with amy millan and jenny lewis. they all are great but she is the best at doing what she wants with her work, and sharing it with the people that will understand it best.

  • haha thats a bit of a stretch for emily

    shes mega sexy. sorry ^.^

  • whos her father

  • Great Artist. Very unlike the image based douche bags that dominate the music industry...

  • i love her

  • "I wanna be a sound."

When you dance around in gold or silver booty shorts and don't wear a bra and play up on a stage above everyone's head and when you choose the profession of a performer and you make videos and put your image on promos... you tend to encourage your audience to remember you as in image, especially the male half!! Men are basically hard-wired to zoom in on the sexy parts. You take your clothes off in front of us once and it's practically burned into our retinas.

  • @trafficlightblind So? I just don't really think she cares. You've got a stick in your ass.

  • she does sound stoned, though.

  • Metrics music is definitely medicine for my soul.

  • Emily Haines is one of my heroes. She totally speaks from the heart about music and creating art..I love how organic the concepts are behind Metric's music.

  • Led Zeppelin wanted to be just sound and they accomplished that by never interacting with television or interviewers.

  • i love metric but.......mmmmmnnnn lets smell our own farts!!in an artistic, and self loving way!!i hate the way that most of the peeps that produce good music or any kinda art form have an air of self rightiousness...mmmn i smell farts

  • @bboyblue24

Yeah, but in many ways it helps with success. Your work is your reputation, and if you do well, you want to keep it that way and do not want to go in the wrong direction. Television is a double-edged sword, it can help with publicity, but it gives the music an image that too many people misinterpret.

  • i enjoy her voice, especially when she's speaking!

  • Stoned? She's very coherently and clearly expressing a beautiful idea/feeling. Yes, someone with a total lack of imagination, and a total lack of really PERSONAL ideas, would call her stoned...

  • for everyone who's saying she's stoned: you clearly don't understand.

she is saying she doesn't want to be recognized for her looks (through television) but for her musics: her "sound" (why she likes radio)

she's not stoned, she's thoughtful. and an amazing musician, of course.

  • @HeatherCameron92 too bad she went and did a song for twilight????! Normally I wouldn't subject anyone to my crude opinions followed by an obnoxious amount of question marks, but I truly feel what she is saying here, and when I hear about this twilight business, I lose touch.

  • @indiglowww Are you claiming that she sold out because she did a song for Eclipse? You know, Paramore did a song for Twilight... and I lost a bit of respect for them. But then I realized, I like Paramore's music. Even though I don't like Twilight, that's fine... the song they produced for Twilight was still really good. So to sum it up- I feel that if Metric wants to produce a song for Eclipse... fine, I like the song, and I like the band. That's all that matters.

  • @EmilyTStrange:

Amen! And "Decode"'s an awesome song, anyway. XD

  • @HeatherCameron92 Thank you! I'm glad someone said it.

  • wow your rude

  • Dang.

She is fine in more ways than one.

  • She's a beautiful sound and a beautiful face as well

  • emily haines is wonderful.

  • She said "shun it like my father"... who's her father?

  • paul haines, the poet

  • Comment removed

  • i like her

  • I love her...and how she wears her headphones over her hoodie.

  • In the words of Wayne:

"She will be mine. Oh yes, she will be mine."

  • she is a sound and she is a beauty. <3

  • I love this girl.

  • She has a nice voice.

  • she's beautiful.

  • ...maybe the point of what she's saying is that being trapped in a body, particularly a female body, is just that: a trap, or some kind of prison. When everyone is constantly judging you on your perceived beauty and second listening to your music... it's disheartening. I just watched an interview w/ her at an awards ceremony, and the first thing the interviewer commented on was how sexy and gorgeous she is. So... to "be a sound", is a freedom from the prison.

  • because the world ,because society and because most of the ppl buy Image ...everything is Image for them ..that is why u can;t be just "a sound" or just a voice" u have to be an image to! u have to thx Vogue , TV , Fashion and those big screens u see everywhere with the picture of all those perfect (made on PC) womans and man that appear all over (bus, big screen , posters etc.) everybody want to look like a Greek sculpture now ... that is the "new age"

  • she's a greatand talented person & that translates into her music (it's not always about the perfect voice) it's when you put your heart and soul into something (not just music) it translates into a beutiful and honest image that gets the attention of people seeking that, listen to her solo album to realise what I mean...

  • when she talks about these things, it reminds me of Jimi Hendrix, just the greatness and the wisdom

  • i am in love with emily also

  • too bad she's too gorgeous to just be a sound

    god she's amazing

  • I'm so in love with you Emily....i love your voice so much...

  • what happen to her cover of Buffalo Springfield?

  • she is a true artist..

what she said is so real..raw, how she wanted to be a "sound" and how TV gets in the way because then the idea of an "image" gets in the way.

this is what an artist is! doing it purely for the music

  • well what i know is that, at the begin when she just started, she was broke. money came along the way. she took the risk of making music, in her own interest, fortunately a lot of people liked her music, as i do. so she became a success. she started for herself. not the money. and even though music is what payes off her bills, i know that she's making music for the love of it. and if you're insinuating she's rich, she's really not all that rich. she's always on the road too, i guess.

  • and anyway, doing things in a different fashion doing things the opposite way, for instance, what's that got to do with money?!

  • what happened to her singing "expecting to fly" after this? it was on here, now its not...anyone got it?

  • that carson daly performance was how i discovered her

    thank goodness for that.

  • her performance of that show is better than the album version. speaking of which does anyone know where the video to that is? i've seen it on here and I know she does Reading in Bed (i believe) then fades into a cover but i can't find the video anymore.

and she said she was carrying the torch for her father but by going on Carson Daly isn't she doing the very opposite?

  • so, trying to be a sound instead of being something to look at, is about money? what's wrong with you? Emily's trying to explain, how her goal is to reach more realness. trying to be a sound, is to be heard; understood, not to be looked at. that's the thing. she wants to go beyond what's seen. so you could hear how she feels when she sings. she searches to connect. so no it's not about the money, idiot. -but apparently you didn't hear, you looked.

  • if she made no money, do you really think she'd have the opportunity to make music or to present herself?

    think about it....

  • that was so awesome what she just said.

this girl is a fucken genius.

  • I want to marry Emily Haines :D.

  • Too late! I've beaten you to it! Muhahaha! :)

  • Then you my friend are my mortal enemy, I shall wage a crusade until she is mine. Mua-ha-ha!

  • *slap* I challenge you to a duel!!

  • Winner gets rockstar booty.

  • rrawr

  • everyone shut the fuck up!! just listen

  • A sound. I wish she could just turn into a vibration that was free to travel into any expanse or crevice and make it more magical.

  • Emily is a beautiful, talented, young woman who sings like an angel. She IS NOT these things:

    Slut

    bitch

    ugly

Shes hotter then angelina jolee... :D

  • you really didnt need to say what she isn't

  • totally agree.

  • I don't know her from Metric, just her with Soft Skeleton, music I find quite arresting. Is Metric a big deal? I have no clue. She seems to be creating from a genuine part of herself. She says her father shunned the spotlight. He was a poet whose words were on some avant-jazz albums, most famously Escalator Over The Hill. My guess is she has to find a way to be who she really is in spite of her pretty pop star image. I hope she can work it out.

  • That's Tony Lopez and he's definitely not what you called him.

  • FUCKINGUGGGGGGH<3

    marry me emily

    marry me

  • Damn I have competition ! There's a lot of guy who love her :P. I'll just keep on dreaming and it'll be good.

  • LEMME TELL YOU THIS

    your the fake

    you big fat phoney

you know who lives in this house people will say at your house

A BIG FAT PHONEY LIVES IN YUOR HOUSE..YOU

you can't even afford sunglasses you poor fat pig

    shove it dirtbag

  • huh? what sunglasses?

  • judging by your comment I guess you hate her because of her pretty mediocre cover of Between the Bars but I don't think your comments really count for this video seeing as she's just being a genuine person, not really quirky. But I don't know what to think anymore, her solo work seems to contradict any bitchy, drugged-up thing she does with Metric

  • I love her dude

  • im quite the fan of her, and her antics

  • I love you, Emily Haines

  • anyone know when is her birthdate?

  • i will start doing t shirts that say "i'm in love with emily haines"

everybody should wear one and go to her concert.

ok ok fuck off i just love her. she's soo talented

  • im in love

  • She's so smart and talented <3

  • She's amazing. Its wicked to watch an artist develop over time. She's going to produce so much incredible work for years to come.

  • She's adorable.
